First sign you're of a certain age...you always pay in cash and count out every last frickin' bit of change no matter how big the queue is behind you.

Just don't? Use a card please. I don't want to count out your 5p pieces.

Also - why do you need a receipt when you have bought 2 items worth £1.49?

First sign of an ageist is them lumping everyone over a certain age into the same stereotype, even if you yourself are of that age. So take note: we are not the same. We invented credit and debit cards (1950 for first credit card, the first debit card in 1966, and chip and pin was invented in… 1965). The World Wide Web (internet was invented earlier) in 1989. Like the other inventions mentioned above, by a Boomer . So rather than thinking we can’t deal with technology, try thanking us for bringing it into existence.
And cash is still acceptable currency, so do your job. And smile.

Your thread title suggests you were aiming your insults at a whole generation. Perhaps those people dont have much money and need to count every penny, nothing to do with age. Some smaller places I go prefer cash and I have to apologise fir not carrying any. We were in a cafe during the week that was Cash Only.

You're just not a very pleasant person are you? If I knew where you worked i could avoid it and take my contactless payments elsewhere.

This. ^ and the OP thinks it's OK to make comments about 'boomers' because she is (supposedly) one herself. I find it hard to believe that she would be so very rude about this generation if she was part of it herself. Hmm

If you ARE 63, and a boomer yourself @Crushingdandelions that doesn't give you a free pass to berate that whole generation.

Who do you think you are? People will pay however thay damn please and receipts are there incase an item is defective, no matter the cost! What a stupid, inflammatory post!

StationJack · 19/04/2026 10:42

You lost me at 'boomer'. YABU.

swapsicles · 19/04/2026 10:42

I too use a till for most of the day and almost see where op is coming from, almost!
Paying by cash is absolutely fine, counting it out, also fine.
But when there's a big queue behind you and you're faffing with change, it holds everyone up, just give over a note and I'll be way quicker sorting the change.
At quieter times it's absolutely fine and I'll help customers find the right coins when they've got a handful and if they want to get rid of/keep certain denominations.
I'm Gen X, not sure if it makes a difference or maybe I'm just more intune to individual customers needs.

LeticiaMorales · 19/04/2026 10:42

Let's bring back cheques and Postal Orders. We'll probably need to do something more creative the next time there's a massive bank crash.

Mic drop! 🎙 Amen to that! Take heed of this @Crushingdandelions !!!!!!!

Crushingdandelions · 19/04/2026 10:08

Because I'm standing behind a till all day taking their money? I would have thought that was sort of obvious. TBF I am a boomer myself.

No need for swearing dear@Gall10

What difference does it make to you how long they take if you are behind the till all day anyway. It's not like your boss is going to say you have to stay behind until you've served 500 customers regardless of how many hours you've worked. You just go when your shift is finished.

Buscobel · 19/04/2026 10:43

There are so many things wrong with your posts @Crushingdandelions and each one makes you look more and more ridiculous. Clearly, someone who has so little regard for the basic concept of customer service and is apparently proud of that, has no place in any retail environment.

Unless you’re trying to be clever, in which case, you missed the mark.

TheyGrewUp · 19/04/2026 10:43

If I spend less than a tenner, I prefer to pay cash. I ask for a receipt, in case I need to prove I've paid for something looking at you, Sainsburys.

If shops want my business, they can accept how I chose to pay.

LilyBunch25 · 19/04/2026 10:44

I'm not a boomer. However I do think you're rude. Are you in such a rush in life this truly bothers you that much? 🙄

Delphiniumandlupins · 19/04/2026 10:44

If I have only spent £1.49 there's a good chance I'm using the opportunity to clear change out of my purse. I have mobility issues so it might take me some time. If you're standing behind a till my custom is keeping you in a job. You can be 63 and still be ageist, just as women can be misogynistic.

MyLuckyHelper · 19/04/2026 10:44

Tbf I’m 38 and often need a receipt becuase I’m expecting to be reimbursed for it at work. Often very low value items so would
need a receipt for 69p washing up liquid for example. I’ll be using my card normally though so hopefully I can be half excused 😂

Tough shit really. People can just learn to be more patient.

saveforthat · 19/04/2026 10:45

Op is not a boomer as boomers do not use that term.

Muteduck · 19/04/2026 10:45

Its MN we are not allowed to say boomers or the word old.
Everyone is young.

News flash people get old.

Same with all the social changes led by boomers. I fucking hate the attitude towards that generation. You'd think working class and/or socially progressive boomers didn't exist the way ageist dicks bang on about them.

LilyBunch25 · 19/04/2026 10:46

Crushingdandelions · 19/04/2026 10:11

Umm I'm 63

Irrelevant. You're still being ageist.

Yep. If there's big queue behind someone it usually means the shop is under-resourced, the queue didn't form because someone was counting out change.

Sunshine1500 · 19/04/2026 10:48

how Impatient and rude I wouldn’t want you serving customers with that attitude.

mydogisthebest · 19/04/2026 10:49

Well I want a receipt because I can scan them and earn money.

I hate the people who use their phone to pay and it never seems to work first time and then they have to retry at least once more. On the bus they are always holding people up.

Who the hell uses their phone to pay - never heard of bank cards?

Although the OP is wrong on many levels, if she works in Aldi she may be under pressure to serve customers at a certain speed. (Unless that is a myth because our local Aldi have lovely staff who don't seem to race your shopping through the scanner.)

LilyBunch25 · 19/04/2026 10:50

Just to add. I was in a queue in the CoOp on Friday. A young man (probably around mid 20s) was in front of me asking the staff member to load 3 lots of money onto a Monzo account, in separate transactions. This took over ten minutes, and they had to open another till. Anyone can create a queue- even those using an apparently super efficient 'online' banking system 🤔 which Monzo is marketed as.
