First sign you're of a certain age...you always pay in cash and count out every last frickin' bit of change no matter how big the queue is behind you.

Just don't? Use a card please. I don't want to count out your 5p pieces.

Also - why do you need a receipt when you have bought 2 items worth £1.49?

I am thinking of going food shopping on a Friday afternoon or Saturday though... apparently supermarkets are full of people like me then. I might make some new friends and we could chat with our trolleys blocking the aisle.😉

Umm I'm 63

That hasn't stopped you from being ageist . Guess you agree with The Who: 'Hope I Die Before I Get Old'!

These criteria could also apply to my 10yo 😅

Indont mind people counting change but i do object to very anal people having to precisely pack their shopping in a very very set way
I find it incredibly selfish

My pet peeve is people who shop in Aldi, (or Lidl,) packing at the checkout! There is a 'packing area' behind you, stick all your shopping in the bloody trolley and pack it over there, like you're supposed to! Hmm

These are the same kind of selfish thoughtless tw@ts who park on the road when they have an empty driveway, because they struggle to park on their OWN DRIVEWAY, and leaving the car on the road (getting in everyone's way, and making people who live opposite, struggle to get in and out of their driveway!) makes life easier FOR THEM!!!!!!!! Hmm

SELFISH!!!!!!!!

Anyone else disappointed they discontinued the half pence coin? We could have so much fun.

🤣🤣🤣

Also my mate, who is not a boomer & he would loudly complain about the staff member that can't count change & thinks cards are the only way because of their ineptitude.

Zov · 19/04/2026 10:35

OH, you mean counting hundreds of half pence coins out @LeticiaMorales ?!!

lovealieinortwo · 19/04/2026 10:07

You can’t say that word on Boomersnet! 😆

@lovealieinortwo Evidence suggests otherwise (and no, I’m not in the ‘boomer’ demographic group). This is from 2013, but the spread won’t be significantly different now I’d wager. N=375, not huge but reasonable. Gransnet threads contributors will likely be different of course, but this paper isn’t analysing specific thread respondents.

Yes! That would be my plan! Not for the usual lovely, helpful assistants that I regularly come across, but on the off chance we could locate the OP's place of work ! 😂

Umm I'm 63

Time you learnt to count out change properly then, as you should be, not passing over a fist full of change.

herbalteabag · 19/04/2026 10:37

I've done this job and tbh I don't really care, when someone took ages to get their money sorted I just spent the time having a quick drink, chatting or quickly checking my phone. It makes absolutely no difference to anything except people in the queue, and I found them to be generally very understanding of 'old' people's habits.

Also, it is a massive generalisation - there are so many boomers who are very tech savvy, probably more so than me. Cash is a form of legal tender. The most annoying thing for me was the customers who had a massive wad of coupons who would pass the whole lot to me and ask if anything was valid!

Thrupenny bits were lovely. I liked those old silver sixpences as well.

thejadefish · 19/04/2026 10:38

Oh dear. My 8 year old pays in cash (she even - gasp - handed over FIVE one pence pieces recently plus a 5p trying to get to £1.80 - the shopkeeper was actually really pleased because she was running low of 1p's and helped/encouraged DD to count out the coins to the correct amount which I thought was lovely). I'll have to tell DD she's not actually Gen A, she's a boomer then. I always want a receipt regardless in case I get stopped by anyone, it shows that I've paid. Plus it helps me keep track.

Because I'm standing behind a till all day taking their money? I would have thought that was sort of obvious. TBF I am a boomer myself.

No need for swearing dear@Gall10

If you’re standing behind a till all day anyway, what difference does it make to you?

SparklyGlitterballs · 19/04/2026 10:39

Another Boomer bashing thread! I'm only a year younger than you OP, so we're both technically scraping into the Boomer generation. I never carry cash and always use my card. I would think the counting out pennies is more of a Silent Generation thing, but those people, like my dear old mum, have lived through true poverty in the war years and often like to draw out their pensions and pay in cash so they know exactly how much they have left in their purse/wallet. Also, it takes seconds to be given a receipt, so that is a nonsense complaint.

Several reasons

so I can show I spent it on what was asked for so I don’t get beaten.
cash so I can buy my child something to show someone cares that won’t show up on bank accounts.
cash so I can see how much I have to spend.

Receipts so I know I can still afford to do everything eat/heat/bathe/clothe my child in budget.
you think it gets easier when you leave….

judged by checkout staff is just another one to add to the list.

try actually judging the people that have made that person paying in pennies that way.
just look in the mirror if you need a tip.

Please tell me where you work. I have some 5p pieces I need to get rid of.

I have a massive jar of one and two pence pieces for you.
Who are these boomers? I,m a boomer and I never pay in cash. Neither do I bother with receipts when I buy my daily mail, This Olde England magazine and Morris Dancing weekly. 😂

1apenny2apenny · 19/04/2026 10:40

Agree on this, it made no odds to me how someone paid, I'm not in a rush to be going somewhere if I'm at work. I didn't care how people paid. We used to have one customer who always bought an absolute shit ton of fruit, packed it all very particularly, and arranged the bags just as particularly on his bike, and laid with coins. It used to take ages to serve him and some people did get frustrated but I didn't really mind, he could take all shift for all I cared.

The only people I did take issue with were the people who would just chuck coins at you. I always remember one woman literally throwing them, overhand, at a young colleague because she was pissed off about something. Horrible little woman.
