First sign you're of a certain age...you always pay in cash and count out every last frickin' bit of change no matter how big the queue is behind you.

Just don't? Use a card please. I don't want to count out your 5p pieces.

Also - why do you need a receipt when you have bought 2 items worth £1.49?

Because I'm standing behind a till all day taking their money? I would have thought that was sort of obvious. TBF I am a boomer myself.

No need for swearing dear@Gall10

Maybe do the job you're paid to do and stop whingeing. If you have an issue with the business you work for accepting cash either find a new job or lobby for change.

sickofthissick · 20/04/2026 12:38

I'm one of those doddery old dementia ridden old dears (61) and I often use cash. I generally find myself saying 'is money ok?' when it used to be be 'do you take cards?'. The majority of my equally, should be dead, according to MN friends use cards and phones, so I guess we, like everyone else....vary!

ilovesooty · 20/04/2026 12:39

nearlylovemyusername · 20/04/2026 12:31

Have you spent your entire life in this job?

ETA: I'm not a boomer and many years ago when I still used cash I plenty of cases when cashier "missed" some coins when giving change, frequently £1 coins. So I'd always check at human operated till. And would always get receipt.

Just do your job properly.

Edited

Apparently she used to be an airline pilot. 🤣

yet this goady ageist thread is still here........

Yes.

Rictasmorticia · 20/04/2026 12:56

A lot of boomers are on a fixed income. They allow themselves a certain amount of money each week. It is easier to control by using cash. Also arthritis makes it hard to use hands and a purse full of coins is heavy.

My DH complains about people getting their purse out after the amount is requested. This is because they need two hands to pack away the shopping. I find his irritation very unkind.

I am so grateful for the very patient and sympathetic cashiers that I meet. I hope as you get older you won’t have to suffer slowness caused by disability.

Well said! I hate these ‘boomer’ threads and I am not even that generation.

Lauren1983 · 20/04/2026 13:10

I haven't read the whole thread so might be saying something already said but the problem is the lack of patience people have for anyone who isn't going at the speed of light.

I have worked in retail and dealt with elderly (not boomers more like boomer parent age) who are a bit slow to pay or gather their stuff up and I can see the huffing and rolled eyes of people behind. I then had to apologise for the wait which might only be 20 seconds longer than a quicker customer. It is quite hard balancing serving a customer who is keen for a chat with one of the few people they may speak to that week and the customers waiting. I wish people had more patience. You are in a shop not in a life or death situation where every second matters.

italianlondongirl · 20/04/2026 14:37

To be honest, I find it's usually people in their thirties paying for huge amounts of goods in B and M and similar using wads of cash

I am in my sixth decade.

WTF am I still supposed to use a "phone" (invented in the 1800s), when we've had email since the 70s ?

fussychica · 20/04/2026 17:53

I'm the dreaded B word which I hate. Lots of wrinkles.
Rarely pay in cash anymore but nearly always take my receipt. Proof of purchase etc
There's a very unpleasant young man in my local Waitrose who had the cheek to ask me if the carrier bag I was using was my own. I said I don't think you sell Mercadona carriers which are stamped when you purchase. Not sure he would have asked an actual shoplifter but boomers are fair game!

I don't recall email in the 70s. We were still receiving, and sending, telex in the early 80s. I remember the first fax from NY coming in. The entire floor went to watch it :)

Yes, emails not commonly in use until the mid 90s.

Just feel lucky they’re not writing cheques while you wait.

Since the Baby Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964, that would make them aged from 62 at youngest, 80 max.

Many of the older boomers will not have occupational pensions so will indeed be on a low fixed income. And yes, many will have arthritis!

When I was a gel, a boomer was a large male kangaroo. No pouch = no coins

Course he wouldn’t have asked a younger person in case he got punched! Although, judging by all the people I know born in the baby boom, making them angry is worse than a punch in the face 😬 I love that a lot of them go against the old stereotypes of old people.

TheKittenswithMittens · 20/04/2026 23:45

I am nearly 70, and I still do a bit of coding for pin money. My 94-year-old Mum likes to use cash, but she is just awkward, not senile.

AccordingToWhom · 20/04/2026 23:49

Lots of my local independent shops and cafes prefer cash and have signs to say so. Probably because of the bank charges.

Also if I never paid cash, I'd never have any change for charity collections or a pound coin for the trolley...

I'm Gen X, for all that matters.

Good on you! That’s awesome! Is it something you were in for many years?

I have just moved into a coding/programming role at the ripe old age of 55 from a completely different role within the same company (and I love it!) 😬 I have no official experience (although I have been learning it for years).

Fortunately my employer is not as narrow minded as some of the posters here - they even paid for me to take some important exams! They knew I was keen and capable to do the role.

A few of the independent shops and takeways round our way now take cash only.

And unfortunately that will be something that will contribute to their potential downfall. I know a lot of people who don’t carry cash and I would assume that it they wouldn’t take a card it was because they were either dodgy or not bothered about keeping afloat.
