First sign you're of a certain age...you always pay in cash and count out every last frickin' bit of change no matter how big the queue is behind you.

Just don't? Use a card please. I don't want to count out your 5p pieces.

Also - why do you need a receipt when you have bought 2 items worth £1.49?

Umm I'm 63

That doesn't stop you being ageist . . .

myheadsjustmush · 19/04/2026 17:38

Because it is their choice to pay by cash - and coins are still legal tender.

Because it is their choice to request a receipt.

At least they are paying for their items and not stealing them!

Charlottejbt · 19/04/2026 19:06

When I was saving up to buy a house I used the envelope system of budgeting, as in literal envelopes of notes taken from the cashpoint each week. I always paid for groceries in cash. Sometimes in coppers 😂The Tesco staff were very patient. I was in my 30s at the time, late Gen X. My boomer parents paid by card (on the housing ladder since 1974, no budgeting down to the last penny for them).

Just saying. I think it's worse since Covid when businesses have been trying to nudge/coerce shoppers into not using cash - to the chagrin of the overworked cashiers when someone like me turns up with a bag of 2 pence pieces 😂But that's a political and societal issue, it's not the fault of doddery boomers.

Lomonald · 19/04/2026 19:26

@Charlottejbt when we had a young family we did the envelope system, just to get by actual envelopes for this and that! We would withdraw cash weekly.

MrThorpeHazell · 19/04/2026 10:20

Think you have it hard now, just be thankful you didn't live in the days of £.s.d. You'd never have managed with 20 shillings to the pound and 12 pence to the shilling. And that's before we get started on Guineas.

The OP responded to this with "@MrThorpeHazell you are so right - I literally could not have coped 😄"

Thing is, if they are the age they are claiming to be, the OP would have lived in the days of lsd. Decimalisation wasn't until 1971.

i wonder what the deletion message will be.

Sixpences rule!!

I do miss them a lot, Christmas puddings are not the same anymore Sad

I always get a receipt when I’m buying things for my elderly neighbour or she will heavily hint that I’m defrauding her. I think she’s still mentally working with pre-EEC prices.

Why on earth do you continue to do favours for her if she hints that you’re defrauding her?!?

Sure you are 🙄

BadLad · 19/04/2026 23:12

Gen X here. I always use cash, and if I can get rid of some of my smaller coins in the process, I always do that. The people behind me can wait.

This ‘boomer’ uses Apple Pay but I might consider counting out pennies now. A novel idea…

I genuinely don't know.

LeticiaMorales · 20/04/2026 09:06

If you read the opening post of that thread it's not only ageist, it's unpleasant and goady. No notion of a measured discussion.

Gall10 · 20/04/2026 09:11

thedramaQueen · 19/04/2026 10:58

This!!! OP obviously has a miserable life that they let petty stuff like that bother them.

My post was reported and I got a stern warning from those who must be obeyed!

BillericayDickie · 20/04/2026 09:38

yet this goady ageist thread is still here........

Why on earth do you continue to do favours for her if she hints that you’re defrauding her?!?

She’s 92 and has nobody else. And to be honest if I hadn’t been to the shops for the last decade I’d be pretty incredulous about current prices too! She’s a lovely old lady, but very straight-talking!

Riverpaddling · 20/04/2026 10:22

Doubt the OP will be back now it's been pointed out she can't be 63 and not remember lsd.

It's almost like she was being goady.....

columnatedruinsdomino · 20/04/2026 10:30

I wouldn’t normally give ‘boomer’ posts a nano-second of my time but in this case with banks closing in every town (we have none) where do people actually get rid of change? Maybe the post office if you have a sufficient amount for the coin bags. Our building society won’t take any copper or silver coin bags. Even slot machines are mainly 50p or £1! Charity coin boxes or upsetting the op seem the only options.

DiscoBeat · 20/04/2026 11:05
  1. Sometimes I want to pay by cash and often shopkeepers are glad to get the change. My mum pays by cash because she doesn't have a credit or debit card (only a cash card).
  2. I often buy various things for my mum from the shops she can't get to and she asks for the receipts.
Very rude post, by the way.
KimberleyClark · 20/04/2026 11:18

I’m late boomer, born 1961 but pay for everything with a card. We aren’t all the same!

nearlylovemyusername · 20/04/2026 12:31

Crushingdandelions · 19/04/2026 10:11

Umm I'm 63

Have you spent your entire life in this job?

ETA: I'm not a boomer and many years ago when I still used cash I plenty of cases when cashier "missed" some coins when giving change, frequently £1 coins. So I'd always check at human operated till. And would always get receipt.

Just do your job properly.
