Do you think England have a strong chance of winning the World Cup?

I was born in England, so I’m English. I have to support regardless of the heartbreaks I go through šŸ˜‚.

Personally I think they are strong favourites because they got a world class manager & a talented roster of a squad!

The problem is Brazil, Argentina, France & Spain are also good footballing nations.

Let me know your thoughts ? Can they end their 60 year trophy drought?

Yes…I assumed you were talking about the men OP, but the women are much better.

Livelovebehappy · 19/04/2026 09:29

I always have expectations we might win. It’s all about form on the day. Fingers crossed we do well - we sure need something to be happy about at the moment.

OneTimeThingToday · 19/04/2026 09:32

No. Im sure they have a good team... but they cant handle the pressure as well as the ither countries

MaggieBsBoat · 19/04/2026 09:32

The women? Absolutely. The men? Absolutely not. They’ll make stupid mistakes and then the male fans will act out. As per…

Sskka · 19/04/2026 09:36

I do think England will win this one. They’re a really good team! They have the talent, as evidenced by the fact that they routinely reach semis and finals now.

Where they’ve always fallen short is that when they come under pressure they fall back on very basic tactics of inviting pressure and banking on being able to defend in numbers against it. That’s why they always lose to the very highest quality teams, but generally not to surprise defeats. ā€˜We will lose to the first good team we play’ isn’t as daft as it sounds.

Tuchel is an excellent manager and I’d back him not to fall into that trap. He won the Champions League with a chaotic Chelsea team by imposing that sort of discipline on them. I expect him to do the same with England.

Sadcafe · 19/04/2026 09:38

Probably not, they have a decent first 11 , provided Kane is fit, but the rest of the options,as evidenced in the recent friendliest, aren’t the best.

Tollington · 19/04/2026 09:45

World class manager? The guy that flopped at Chelsea!

They’ll get out of the group and then go out on penalties to somebody rubbish

He rested half the team and played kids in those friendlies, it’s not an accurate gauge.

England are rated the 4th best team in the world by FIFA! Although I don’t think we’ll win, making out that we’re mediocre or merely ā€˜decent’ is untrue.

GrimDamnFanjo · 19/04/2026 09:56

Nope. I dread the men’s tournaments. Women on the other hand, well the final is a given these days..

He won the champions league! How high is the bar here?!

DuncinToffee · 19/04/2026 10:09

Yes they can

flapjackfairy · 19/04/2026 10:20

No ! For a start the best players dont turn up.and perform at they're best ( looking at you Harry Kane. Great player week in week out but not when playing for his country for the last couple of years ).
And we are too pedestrian and boring. Finally they cant play well for a whole 90 mins on the whole . They have periods of good play but cant seem to produce it consistently.

And last of all they never seem to have any fire in their bellies. They just dont seem to care v much either way..We need some big characters who.could motivate and inspire and lick them into shape. Sadly that is lacking in these days of over analysed football. I dont care how many times someone has touched the ball in a certain area etc etc. I want to see them singing the National Anthem with some pride in representing their country !
Personally If I was the manager I would loosely organise the team.and then tell them to enjoy themselves and take a risk.
I hope I am wrong because I would love to.se them win but dont hold out much hope personally

Rosecoffeecup · 19/04/2026 10:22

Need Kane to be fit and carrying on his current form. Tournament football is good for Tuchel and he will be more decisive than Southgate.

There's immense competition but England have as good a chance as any

MrThorpeHazell · 19/04/2026 10:26

Chance, yes. Strong chance, no.

ReignOfError · 19/04/2026 10:34

The England men’s team is about fourth best in the tournament, so a semi-final place and loss would be about the right level of expectation.

I do wish the English sports media would rein in their ridiculous hyperbole about how world-beating every England team must be. Even the 1966 team had (and arguably needed) a home advantage, FFS.

TheKittenswithMittens · 19/04/2026 10:37

The World Cup is so tarnished now, I couldn't care less.

TheKittenswithMittens · 19/04/2026 10:39

A casual check shows packages available from 5K. Are you happy if your DP spends 5K to go watch England play 3 games?

the80sweregreat · 19/04/2026 10:43

The English fans are pretty hardy , but I suppose it won’t be as busy due to the costs involved. You need to have a lot of money for this particular tournament.

user1484056932 · 19/04/2026 10:45

No chance England will win and with what’s going on in the world who really cares anyway.

SpottyAlpaca · 19/04/2026 10:51

England are certainly among the favourites because we have a very strong squad with experienced world class players in key positions and a manager who has an outstanding reputation as a tactician. Unlike his predecessor.

But France, Spain & Argentina are also very strong and their teams are likely to be better suited to the hot, humid midsummer weather in the US.

We are also far too dependent on the irreplaceable Harry Kane to score most of our goals. As the recent friendlies demonstrated, if he gets injured, we are completely screwed.

TheKittenswithMittens · 19/04/2026 10:53

I remember watching England win in 1966. It's one of the privileges of being old, you remember England winning the World Cup.

My parents had just bought a house for 6k. We walked a mile to primary school and back every day. On the way home, we would look for corona bottles to recover the 3d deposit and buy some sweets.

ACIGC · 19/04/2026 10:54

I doubt it, but as long as they do better than Scotland, I'll be happy enough.
