No More Dreamies For My Cat

A beautiful jet black female cat adopted me 2 years ago from a cat charity. The previous owner only fed her dried food and knowing that wasn't healthy I put her on wet food that she loved as not having it before ( unless the charity fed her this). As a treat I started giving her Dreamies that became a sort of side dish to her wet food.
A few months later I noticed she was licking and chewing herself (no fleas or parisites) acting nervous and started getting bald patches all around her lower abdomen and legs. I was close to putting her in a carrier and taking her to the vet when I happened upon a post on a cat forum stating that cats that over groom are put on anti-anxiety medicine! In some cases 60 quid a month! After a bit more research I stopped the Dreamies and gave her healthy dry treats and after 6 to 7 weeks she's got 70% of her fur back. Hope this helps.

What healthy treats did you
switch too?

WednesdaysChild73 · 18/04/2026 18:29

the dry treats triggered memories of her old life/owner and caused the anxiety 🤔

This is meaningless anecdata. You met one cat who may or may not have had an allergic reaction to Dreamies. That does not mean they are bad for all cats (in moderation). I have an allergic cat. And yes, I did try cutting the Dreamies/changing food/changing litter. She has bald patches, was constantly grooming, scratched her ears to bleeding. She's been on Atopica for a year now - and yes, it's an expensive and heavy duty drug. But she has her coat back, she has her health back, she is happy and well. All cats are different.

Well done for adopting a beautiful black cat🐈‍⬛ ! They are the best. Dreamies are a treat/bribery tool for vet trips etc, not everyday food. Mine don't get then every day, maybe a few times a month but their fur is everywhere healthy. Wet food is probably better but complete dry food can be good as well.

I buy Dreamies for my cat but he occasionally gets them as part of a game. He only gets 3 and it's a slow "one, two, three" and then we throw them and he has to run into the kitchen to find them.

BananaPeels · 18/04/2026 20:18

Same thing with my cat. Came out of nowhere. We think it’s a wheat allergy. Now on ridiculously priced allergy food! And no dreamies. Every time I think I’ll give her a couple and see if the allergy has passed, it hasn’t and the licking resumes so don’t do that anymore!

Mitzy2026 · 18/04/2026 20:20

Yes you're right. This one was treated really bad. 6 months old and had kittens in a rescue centre. She's 5 now and breaks my heart.

They are meant as an odd treat not as a regular cat food supplement anyway. I wouldn’t’dream’ of giving that many to my cat.

Fibrous · 18/04/2026 20:24

I don’t give dreamies to our cat because it turns him into a raving psychopath who goes for your legs every time you walk past the dreamies cupboard. My mum always gives him some for Christmas and then we have months of him harassing us even well after they are gone. No more!

Mitzy2026 · 18/04/2026 20:24

I'm not joking. I've watched my beautiful cat sit and chew her fur out. She was bald waste down......imagine that as a human being.

They where a treat. That's the point.

Sorry to hear your cat developed a problem and it's great to hear that eliminating dreamiest fixed it.

Just to balance this out, I have a black cat and he eats dry food and the head end of mice..... he point blank refuses wet food....and quite often some dreamiest as a treat. He most definitely does not chew his fur and he has a very healthy coat. In fact if we try to put him on a diet he just bites us.

As a treat I started giving her Dreamies that became a sort of side dish to her wet food.

But no treats are to be given this regularly, hence them being 'treats' 😳

They're basically junk food.

Fine in moderation but a bit like a human having a side of chips with every single meal.

I had to stop giving my cats Dreamies because one developed an addiction to them - it was awful, my tiny girl was constantly pawing and shouting at me for them, night and day, whenever I went near the drawer I kept them in.

The first night I refused, I will never forget her reaction - she did a double-take and head tilt as if to say 'Are you serious?' 😆 It took some weeks before she stopped demanding them. My other cat wasn't bothered, but he's a huge, fat boy so probably better off without them.
