No More Dreamies For My Cat

Mitzy2026 · 18/04/2026 18:26

A beautiful jet black female cat adopted me 2 years ago from a cat charity. The previous owner only fed her dried food and knowing that wasn't healthy I put her on wet food that she loved as not having it before ( unless the charity fed her this). As a treat I started giving her Dreamies that became a sort of side dish to her wet food.
A few months later I noticed she was licking and chewing herself (no fleas or parisites) acting nervous and started getting bald patches all around her lower abdomen and legs. I was close to putting her in a carrier and taking her to the vet when I happened upon a post on a cat forum stating that cats that over groom are put on anti-anxiety medicine! In some cases 60 quid a month! After a bit more research I stopped the Dreamies and gave her healthy dry treats and after 6 to 7 weeks she's got 70% of her fur back. Hope this helps.

No. We've got lots of cats and most of them don't like Dreamies so I never buy them. Webbox sticks in our house, especially the cheese ones.

Ooh yes. The cheese ones are the best.

Or so my cats say. I don't eat them myself.

Agapornis · 18/04/2026 22:11

What's wrong with being naked from the waist down anyway? All the better for sunbathing.

(With apologies to my cat for making these public. He didn't like living in the shelter, it's mostly grown back since.)

Summary.

OP detailed.some health issues with their cat that she thinks were relates to dreamies

Other posters detailed similar issues with their cats.

Some detailed issues with their cat's behaviour after having dreamies. So they had to ban them.

Thread was going ok. Until OP seemed to malfunction. And now confusion/ amusement reigns. With some thinking the Op wasn't true.

My cat is always on the dreamies.
He has very thick healthy fur I am.pleased to report!

Butterme · 18/04/2026 22:26

My cat absolutely loved dreamies.

I took him to the vet multiple times as he’d randomly have loads of fur falling out.
It cost me a fortune in vet fees and we never got to the bottom of it.

On the last visit they said it might be allergies and I’d never thought that it might be the dreamies as it only happened at random times.

Have I got the only cat who doesn't like Dreamies?

Lenny doesn't like dreamies - bloody weirdo.

YelramBob · 18/04/2026 22:33

The plot thickens (as does some PPs' cats' fur)

Mine got treated to some wafer thin turkey yesterday, spoilt furry gits. And none of them swore at me for furq's sake

Happyjoe · 18/04/2026 22:40

I read just the other day that they shouldn't have too many. My last cat and the cat we have now just didn't recognise dreamies as food, the cat we have now dislikes all cat treats. Better for them no doubt but I wanted my cat to be like the one in the advert where it comes charging!

Glad your cat is doing better OP!

yeah the only thing to do is find the allergy cat food and try all the brands until you find one they like and then stick with that. We basically went from whiskers to the expensive allergy dry food and then untamed wet cat food as has no additives like run of the mill cat food. Worked almost instantly to stop her licking herself raw. Bankrupting us tbh and does she appreciate it?!!!!! Tried more expensive dreamie type treats with less additives but she turned her nose up at them. My kids think she’s a bit too bougie for her own good.

Louie’s not fussed on Dreamies (but will eventually eat them if nothing better is forthcoming, he’s not a psychopath) and much prefers Felix Crispies. His all time fave is the Bonkers chicken lollipops though. (This thread is bonkers tbh.)

I bought those for my neighbours cat, apparently loved it, proper munch! Something rather cute giving a cat a lolly!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 18/04/2026 22:46

I bought some of those expensive chicken treats for my cats and they were outraged.

You'd think I'd tried to poison them.

Initially he would lick them (as intended) but now just chomps. I can pied piper him around the house by showing him the packet though, he really loves them!

Agapornis · 18/04/2026 22:53

You know those freeze dried chicken cubes treats? Where you get powder at the bottom of the tube? (I call it cat cocaine)
My cats hate it.

It's just like the human palate - we don't all like the same thing.

Whatwouldnanado · 18/04/2026 22:56

Having just spent an eye watering sun on dental treatment (extractions etc) for our two boys we have read up on cat food and spent lots of time squinting at the small print ingredient lists. SO much sugar in many wet and dry brands! We have now switched them to better stuff. Dreamies still in use for occasional as bribery though.

Error404FucksNotFound · 18/04/2026 23:04

My cats not that bothered about dreamies but loves those webbox lick-e-lix things. We mix one with water because she's a bugger for not drinking enough.

She'd fight you for a pringle though.

Also likes to sniff garlic bread for some reason. I dont let her try it, obviously. But she's the only cat I've ever known who likes the smell.

Ilovelurchers · 18/04/2026 23:05

I've actually found this thread helpful (as well as funny) - I recently noticed a bald patch on my cat's tummy - I'd switched up the cat litter in the hope that this was the problem, but perhaps I should cut our the Dreamies too? I use them for enrichment - she has some puzzle- based toys I "hide" them in for her to find. Probably too many, too often.

Can anyone recommend a healthier treat that would serve the same purpose? She doesn't like fresh bits of chicken or any kind of "human" food - doesn't appear to realise she can eat it.....

Edited

We had a dog who loved the smell and taste onions, garlic, curry and chilli. As soon as mum started crushing garlic to start dinner she'd be there. Chilli mince was her fav thing, weird and also (we found out years later) not good for dogs or cats.

I wonder if your cat may just like the lots of butter in the garlic bread? Can't fault her logic if that's the case!

‘Not good’ - highly toxic and lethal! I’m amazed your dog survived.

Allergictoironing · 19/04/2026 09:52

The Dreamies packet says up to 20 per day max for adult cats, 8 per day kittens, so feeding a handful as a side to main meals will be well over the maximum recommended amount.

Tobias has taken 3 years to suddenly decide he quite likes Dreamies - Possibly because Girlcat inhales them so fast he's never had a look in until now!
