No More Dreamies For My Cat

A beautiful jet black female cat adopted me 2 years ago from a cat charity. The previous owner only fed her dried food and knowing that wasn't healthy I put her on wet food that she loved as not having it before ( unless the charity fed her this). As a treat I started giving her Dreamies that became a sort of side dish to her wet food.
A few months later I noticed she was licking and chewing herself (no fleas or parisites) acting nervous and started getting bald patches all around her lower abdomen and legs. I was close to putting her in a carrier and taking her to the vet when I happened upon a post on a cat forum stating that cats that over groom are put on anti-anxiety medicine! In some cases 60 quid a month! After a bit more research I stopped the Dreamies and gave her healthy dry treats and after 6 to 7 weeks she's got 70% of her fur back. Hope this helps.

I have definitely added the word 'furq' to my vocabulary now. Ideal for cat-based threads.

On the topic of OP malfunction, I happened to be watching Red Dwarf last night at the same time as reading this thread, and for a moment or two I thought I'd entered some parallel universe.

The Dreamies packet says up to 20 per day max for adult cats, 8 per day kittens, so feeding a handful as a side to main meals will be well over the maximum recommended amount.

Tobias has taken 3 years to suddenly decide he quite likes Dreamies - Possibly because Girlcat inhales them so fast he's never had a look in until now!

Goodness, that's loads! Mine do get Dreamies daily, but nowhere near that many.

They're a useful barometer for my kidney cat's health - if his mouth ulcers are coming back, he refuses them and it's back to the vet. So far that hasn't happened since he started on his current meds regime (almost 2 years)

If you have a cat with kidney issues it’s worth trying Integra Protect Yummy Bits which look exactly like Dreamies and don’t (for a change) smell like all the other renal foods (ie., hideous). They’re rock hard, though, so I have to break them up for my cat with very few teeth.

Louie’s not fussed on Dreamies (but will eventually eat them if nothing better is forthcoming, he’s not a psychopath) and much prefers Felix Crispies. His all time fave is the Bonkers chicken lollipops though. (This thread is bonkers tbh.)

Moss is insane for those! He goes all bushy and feral - he got 2 on his birthday

My kidney cat has no teeth at all and has refused every single renal food and treat known to man. He lost so much weight on the renal food it was scary. He is now getting normal breakfast and dinner is poached fish, made fresh by me. This is weirdly cheaper than cat food. He is on 2.5 mg of Nelio daily and is fighting fit - at perfect weight, glossy, energetic, completely himself, no deterioration in his urine values. He can have his precious few Dreamies (he has alternative treats from the others the rest of the time).

My cat says this thread is fake news.

Fake mews, surely?

Our cats are pretty much grain free, so Dreamies have never been a thing here.

They are rather partial to dried salmon strips from Home Bargains. One loves a dried sprat but the other isn't at all interested.

Excellent name! 10/10

By ‘normal breakfast’ what do you mean?

Ive been persevering with the Royal Canin renal fish food and she was eating quite well but is still vomiting. It’s all such a worry. I love her so much and just want to do what’s right and the problem with ckd cats is they have good and bad days so knowing what to do is so hard!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 20/04/2026 09:18

Oh and yes. ‘Get a compass’ has to be the most random, brilliant dis I’ve ever heard.

👍🏻🤣🤣🤣

Dreamies are not good for cats, particularly if you have small children. I learnt this lesson and now my cats get ham or leftover roast chicken as a treat, not Dreamies. This should actually be a public service announcement.

For a moment there I thought you meant the kids were eating them as well. 😂

Dreamies can be a treat reserved for the cats when the dc are asleep in bed and none the wiser. Just keep them in a high cupboard. The Dreamies I mean, not the children.

Normal is whatever standard cat food the fussy bugger will eat. He also eats Lily's Kitchen dry food, just like the others. He's young (4) and hasn't had a bad day since starting his current regime. No vomiting, normal wees and poos. But he's only stage 2.

Ah no the children have never resorted to eating dreamies as far as I know, however small DD decided it would be fun to give the cat an entire box in one go which made him sick. Same DD also decided it would be fun to entertain her younger brother by putting eggs (we also had hens) in the tumble dryer and watching them go round...
