Recommend me a top tier four slice toaster

HotSpotNot · 17/04/2026 18:48

Our toaster just died.

I'm sick of buying crap toasters.

I wanted a decent four slice toaster that is a pleasure to use, and will fit all sorts of sizes and thicknesses of bread.

I feel like I want it to have two separate levers so if toast on one side is halfway through, you can start a new piece on the other side.

I feel I deserve this. It's finally time to live like I'm a success!

Use your air fryer.

That's not very energy efficient!!

Ophir · 18/04/2026 22:21

The George by Asda toaster is the perfect one, all bread fits in
perfect toaster

Isn't it? Air fryers use less energy than toasters in general.

We have a dualit (2 slice) and it toasts one slice more than the other! We were expecting it to be great so it's really annoying!

Edited

@Badoingy have you got the bagel button pressed… this is how it toasts bagels normally…

Smeg

I had my 4 slice Tefal industrial toaster for about 30 years. I replaced it recently with a 2 slice Tefal which I’m happy with as all sides are evenly toasted

HugoElephant · 18/04/2026 22:31

Dualit. They are great and last for years.

BigBlueSocks · 18/04/2026 22:39

My dualit must have been a dud as it gave up the ghost after less than a year! It was so slow too. I wanted one as we always had dualit at work and I loved them. Got a refund and bought a Delonghi. That's not great- takes ages and doesn't fit a full slice of bread so have to turn it!
Watching with interest as I need a better one- thanks for starting this OP

I have a sage one, similar to the one posted up thread that I've had for 10yrs at least. Still going strong, but then its just DH and myself- no kids. It can fit all manner and length of breads, but you want separate, working sides. They also do this one which has independent sides and extra wide slots:

We have this Sage one. It was a covid purchase. Absolutely love it, especially the bit more function.

But for just making toast a toaster is much more efficient - air fryers are heating up a much larger cavity. Toasters use around 800W and an air fryer uses 1800W. I know this as we were using our air fryer as a toaster after our last toaster broke and I looked this up to see if it was worth getting another toaster to try and save counter space :)

PigletJohn · 18/04/2026 23:41

The old-style Dualits are mechanically simple and are easy to repair. They also sell more modern designs under the same brand name which you throw away when they go wrong.

There are user groups on Facebook that share instructions and advice.

Crwysmam · 18/04/2026 23:46

Duelit. I thought mine had died but it just had a large sultana stuck causing it to cut out. It’s a safety feature, I’m not good at referring to instructions. It was out of action for 12 months until I got round to reading them. It’s over 10yrs old and still going strong.

Oh, well mine must be smaller because it doesn't use that much energy.

I hate Dualits with a passion. We were given a catering one and it was shit when we got it and shit when we replaced the elements, thinking that might make it produce toast instead of bread vaguely singed in a couple of places.

Got a Rangemaster after trying a bunch of other cheap-mid range brands, all of which were also crap, just nowhere near as crap as the Dualit was. That thing is built like it's actually meant to last.

I avoid Dualit toasters now. We had one for about 10 years - it was too big, too noisy and just not that brilliant. My MiL's Dualit is equally mediocre.

They're the Smeg fridges of the toaster world.

Yes, for more than £100.

I had a dualit architect first, the plastic melted around the toasting slots just out of warranty. I then bought a proper dualit thinking it was repairable. Not long out of warranty and it needed two new elements and a timer.

The elements are £20 each, the timer £25, plus postage and repair costs.

I decided to cut my losses. The Rowlett toaster comes with two spare elements, after they are £9. Handmade in England, 3 year warranty, feels like a tank.

That's bad luck. I've had my Dualit 4 slice toaster (and kettle and scales) for 23 years now and the only repair has been a new timer dial.

Cyclingmummy1 · 18/04/2026 18:23

Dualit. But do not buy a kettle. Waste of money.

My Dualit kettle is 23+ years old and has always worked perfectly.

CalicoCaterina · 19/04/2026 06:28

I don't think that Dualit today has the longevity of Dualit 25 years ago @WhatKindOfCake . I've had both, never had an issue with the older one but XH took the old one when we divorced.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 19/04/2026 06:43

We had a very poor record on toasters - average life expectancy in our household was less than a year. I eventually decided to buy a commercial toaster - I figured if it was designed for hotel usage, even we couldn’t break it. That one lasted 2 months.

Our happy-ever-after toaster, which we have now had for about 4 years, was the basic Lakeland four-slicer. Cost £50 - with a 20% discount, so we paid £40. Fine to look at, toasts nicely. Will probably find it’s exploded overnight now that I’ve extolled its virtues.

PigletJohn · 19/04/2026 06:55

My Dualit needed a 1-2 switch recently. Due to fat fingers I found it difficult to get at so I bought a new one for about £10 and got my local repair cafe to fit it for me. I gave them a tenner.

Worth considering a reconciliation? It needn't be forever....

Needspaceforlego · 19/04/2026 08:42

I've got a Morphy Richards 4 slice toaster, its red, what made me want a red toaster? Fashion at the time, needless to say it refuses to break! I think its and matching kettle are at least 10 years old

CalicoCaterina · 19/04/2026 08:59

😂@Serenissimissima , not even a dualit toaster is worth putting myself through that.

I have thought about taking my two slice to the local repair cafe, I can see that @PigletJohn has done that. I think it might need more than one trip as I presume they will need to identify what it needs, I think two elements and a timer, but I might be wrong.

I could then donate it to one of my kids.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 19/04/2026 09:23

I really like our Dualit, though I did check the reviews and bought it knowing that some said the longevity wasn't what it used to be.

Ilovewillow · 19/04/2026 09:37

Dualit, we had one as a wedding present 20 yrs ago, still going strong !
