Recommend me a top tier four slice toaster

Our toaster just died.

I'm sick of buying crap toasters.

I wanted a decent four slice toaster that is a pleasure to use, and will fit all sorts of sizes and thicknesses of bread.

I feel like I want it to have two separate levers so if toast on one side is halfway through, you can start a new piece on the other side.

I feel I deserve this. It's finally time to live like I'm a success!

I second the recommendation to get a commercial toaster.

After getting fed up with toasters only lasting a few years I got a 6 slice Rowlett second hand off ebay. It came from a greasy spoon caff so it needed a good clean but well worth it.

That was almost 20 years ago now and it's been bulletproof. We use it at least twice a day, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day (we like toast!).

It cost £25 along with a toastie maker, and we treated it to a set of new elements last year which cost £60 to DIY. £85 over 20 years. Well worth it.

We have the dualit 4 slice architect and are really pleased with it. We like that you can lift the toast up to check on it!

Snap. Bought one (and the kettle) after staying in a holiday cottage with one.

HotSpotNot · 18/04/2026 15:12

I really like the 4 slice dualit architect, as we definitely need two independent sections as kids like different browness and often we need to start a new piece while another is halfway through.
Those who are pleased with them, how long have you had them? A few are saying they don't last long...
I see dualit are offering them refurbished for just over £100

Ive had mine for 12 years

Caspianberg · 18/04/2026 15:19

Zwilling

they either have the 2 slot long toaster, which fits x4 standard toast or 2 long slices of loaf bread

or they have 4 slot where you can control both sides separately.

I hate Dualits with a passion. We were given a catering one and it was shit when we got it and shit when we replaced the elements, thinking that might make it produce toast instead of bread vaguely singed in a couple of places.

Got a Rangemaster after trying a bunch of other cheap-mid range brands, all of which were also crap, just nowhere near as crap as the Dualit was. That thing is built like it's actually meant to last.

I went for a rangemaster in the end as found a good deal for £65! Looking forward forward to the "lift and look" and bagel functions!

I think most of the recommendations for Dualits are for the classic Dualit toasters. The sort with the clockwork timer and the manual lift lever.

We have one that is 25 years old and used daily. I prefer it to other toasters I have used.

Edited

I think you're right. This is mine with the bagel function.
ETA just seen op has picked one already now

Interesting to see the list of Dualit toasters that are repairable, vs those that are not repairable.

The Architect and the Lite are not deemed repairable like the classic toaster most people on this thread are raving about.

What products are repairable?

In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your product, depending on the fault and stock availability of spares, we will do our best to repair these products.

Yes. That did put me off. I needed one with long slots - you know that take long sourdough bread and the only long slot wasn’t repairable

HotSpotNot · 18/04/2026 17:14

I was so close to getting this sage, but unfortunately just one lever won't work for us as we are always needing to start a new slice while another is halfway through toasting. Also sometimes having each side set to a different number is useful

Dualit

Papyrophile · 18/04/2026 17:15

We bought our classic 4-slice Dualit in 1988, and it's still going strong. My electrical shop replaces the elements every eight years or so, and it needed a new clockwork timer when it hit 35.

7238SM · 18/04/2026 17:28

I have a sage one, similar to the one posted up thread that I've had for 10yrs at least. Still going strong, but then its just DH and myself- no kids. It can fit all manner and length of breads, but you want separate, working sides. They also do this one which has independent sides and extra wide slots:

Shinyclean · 18/04/2026 17:59

I wanted a dualit for years. The element on one side doesn’t properly work anymore and we haven’t even had it a year I think.

I wouldn’t buy another one

The best one ever was a fiver from Asda

It lasted over 10 years had all sorts of gadgets, but I was bored with it so we got This One

Cyclingmummy1 · 18/04/2026 18:23

Dualit. But do not buy a kettle. Waste of money.

Oldandbored · 18/04/2026 18:26

marsal · 17/04/2026 18:50

Dualit

This is the only answer possible. Ours is 20 something years old . The timer spring was replaced by DH 2 years ago.

MatchaTea1 · 18/04/2026 18:49

I had my eye on that one too, but couldn't quite justify the cost so we got this one instead https://www.next.co.uk/style/st157224/e86012 so far so good, and it came with a 2 year guarantee which I thought was good for this price point :)

askmenow · 18/04/2026 20:53

Whichever brand you choose to buy, I wouldn’t be without my twin long slot toaster which can take baguettes, crumpets and thicker than normal chunky bread.
It’ll also make toasties in toastie bags so takes equivalent to sandwich thickness
My prerequistite is performance and colour not price.

Didimum · 18/04/2026 20:55

Dualit. Best toaster I’ve ever had

Lemonsandroses · 18/04/2026 21:32
