Are you stocking up on food/household items?

Have you started ‘stocking up’ on items you think might be rising sharply or might become harder to get hold of?
We know that there will be a knock on effect of ships being stuck in the Straight of Hormuz.
I read that food prices are expected to go up by 9% by Christmas. I can’t remember where I read it don’t shoot me but I thought at the time that it was a ‘proper’ source (as opposed to my mates from school on Facebook).
If you are stocking up -what are you buying?

No because it’s fools like you that are panic buying which will push the prices up faster! Just grow up and think logically!

I’m not fucking ‘panic buying’.
Are you generally this nasty in RL or just when you hide on anonymous groups?
Bugger off with your ridiculous comments.

I’ve done a stock check of main freezer and have moved some things to get eaten this week which has cleared a big enough space to freeze two extra weeks of dog food which will mean I can store about 35 -40 days worth.
I really really don’t want to have to feed her kibble so I’m pleased I’ve got a plan for her.
Plus lots of raw feeders freeze their dogs meat for at least two weeks before feeding it so I’ll be able to do that too.
I think I have become a prepper without realising it!
I always have ‘stuff’ in - medicines, first aid stuff, replacement bulbs, batteries, candles , and in the last year or so l have bought water purification tablets and a camping stove. My friends in the village know if they are ill to message/phone me for advice and treatment! ((Disclaimer! Plasters, cold, sore throats etc. Not meningitis or leg hanging off)).

our dog was raw fed but we have switched her to a mixture of raw and high quality kibble because a stock of her food took up too much valuable freezer space. We phased it in so she was fine. I have four bags of kibble in the garage which will last about four months.

MissDixieVoom · 19/04/2026 21:01

We have always bought in bulk - lots of children and growing up in a place where getting to the shops was tricky have shaped my mindset. A well-stocked pantry helps me feel in control.

This year we will not be changing those shopping habits, but I will probably grow more salad than usual.

Ihateboris · 19/04/2026 21:16

Panic buying is selfish and unnecessary. Not everyone (including myself), can afford to buy anymore than my weekly shop...so all you stockpilers who have the money to afford it, leave nothing on the shelves for the rest of us.

TightlyLacedCorset · 19/04/2026 22:03

Angliski · 19/04/2026 09:27

We have always bought wholesale so that the weekly shop isn’t too burdensome. Use suma or other coops so we have

big roll
kitcheb roll
bin bags
dishawasher tabs
washing powder
cleaning products
cans of toms/coconut milk/ peanut butter
boxes of oil/salt/vinegar
beans/lentils/pulses/nuts and seeds/pasta/crisps/rice

stored in loft. My husband always teases me about Armageddon but it is really just very convenient.

Lol do you have guns to defend it too?😄

But that's pretty impressive. Keeping it all in the loft is a good idea. What small storage I have is outside the house. Come severe shortages I am not exaggerating when I say (I mean people have to bolt down their flower pots and chain the hanging ones because of theft and my Amazon parcels left on the step have been pilfered before) that it would be easily ransacked.

I'm going to have to throw out any unnecessary stuff to make room in a cupboard and I will use the micro greens idea.

But as regards planting a lot of veg, that seems a lot to do now in a hurry and compost can be expensive. I have room for sweet potatoes and potatoes, but I tried potatoes year before last, red variety, they grew but they were really small for some reason.

Right, I’m NOT PANIC BUYING.
If you can’t afford to stock up does that mean the rest of us can’t??
Im going to get a new stair carpet soon- should I cancel it so there’s plenty of carpet left for people who by their own admission cannot afford to buy it??
Hve you noticed a dearth of fairy powder and coffee beans recently?
As that’s what I have been mainly buying.
Me buying now when it’s cheaper than it will be in 7 months is going to make zero difference to you. Or anybody else.

Crikey, you sound very angry. No need to be so aggressive. If you don't want other opinions that differ from your own, don't ask.

Also, if everyone decided to stock up now before (allegedly) everything skyrockets in price, then that will in itself increase the prices.

Can l tell you a secret?
I really really struggle picking up kibble fed dog poo.
It was one of the many reasons why i decided (about 7years ago now) to start feeding raw.
My dogs poos are small, hard and don’t smell. Well, not that I sniff them but there’s no waft if you catch my drift.
I just cannot see me going back to kibble even a really high grade one.
Frankly, I’ll buy a secondhand freezer for her first. I already use the built in one in the kitchen for dog food (apart from mini drawer at bottom) which holds about 30 tubs now I’ve also allocated the top part for raw food too.

How will it?
Did loo roll go up during the great loo roll crisis or spring 2020?
No. It didn’t. When it came back in stock it was the same price. Oh some imndependant corner style shops tried to make a few quid but the6 were roundly called out on local facebook groups - and people don’t forget.
But Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi etc -no.
Prices WILL go up this year. Coffee and cocoa hve gone up hugely over the last year - was that down to people buying an extra bar a week or could it have been something else??
I do this to save myself some money in the long run.
I can afford it and I’ve got the space for it.
And from what I’ve seen on here everyone isn’t stocking up now so you should be ok.
However, if you find the shelves hve been stripped of fairy powder, coffee beans, and dishwasher pods (again fairy) then let me know. I’ll sell you some at cost price.
Oh and a heads up. Next week I’m buying 6 x 750g mince - if that sends the price shooting up I apologise in advance,

I’ve got an aunt like that.
Family call her freezer ‘Chernobyl’.
When my step father married my mum in 1999 they found lard (? Why freeze lard ffs) in his freezer from 1979. Plus every single payslip he had ever recived ll neatly filed going back to 1961.
Im not too sure what happened to the freezer contents but I know my mother insisted he couldn’t bring everything,

😂🫣 I’m not quite that bad! Not far off, especially the pay slips in loft.

Bit cheeky as there’s a problem with mackerel stocks being unsustainable. Waitrose has committed to not restocking until they’ve reached sustainable levels again.

Is that correct? I always thought mackerel was sustainable. My DH like a tin in tomato sauce on toast.

Msmfailedusbad · 20/04/2026 04:54

I am keeping my tinned cupboard and frozen food at the upper end of the normal capacity I have, but not bulk buying or anything like that.
I doing this to mitigate price rises which I have noticed are creeping up again. In the scheme of things i probably only have enough food at any time to last a couple of weeks tops.

Definitely should notc be feeding unsustainable fish to dogs! The person obsessed with her dodg’s raw diet wins the panicker prize for the thread.

No. As has been explained multiple times, people who stock up in advance are then out of the picture and sat happily at home when you need to rush to the shop and panic buy in a crisis because you have nothing in. Stock up while goods are flowing freely and there are no shortages is responsible and is actually what responsible governments want their citizens to do.

It worries me that the British are so foolish and/or irresponsible that they either cannot grasp the concept or think that they have no duty to engage In The least bit of self reliance where they are perfectly capable of doing so.

1)Sardines are not an ‘unsustainable’ fish.
2)I’m not obsessed. I never think about it unless I get asked. I just do it. Is explaining an obsession in your world?? How terribly odd.
