School car crash - are the police being thrown under the bus?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15732723/Police-biased-female-killed-girls-crash-Wimbledon.html

I remember starting a thread on this some time ago and I think the general conclusion was that epilepsy (undiagnised) would in all likelihood be the reason for this tragedy given the cirumstances. there was a long discussion about the nature of this consition.

There was also the feeling that the parents should grieve and let go after this tragedy yet it appears the thing has escalated to involve racism and questioning of the investigation resulting to my mind the police being pressured to make another arrest simply because the senior met didn't like the optics of this rather than material change in circusrance.

Are those investigating officers being thrown.under the bus because the met politically would like to see something done here with a rich white woman being talked when there seems to be no evidence at all she didn't have a seizure? If it realistically can't be proven a seizure didn't occur aren't we headed for a painful trial for the parents where they gain will feel justice won't be done???

Police 'biased towards driver' who killed two girls, relatives claim

It has now emerged that the families of both girls and other surviving victims have complained to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) alleging 'unconscious bias'.

OP I think given the deaths of two 8 year olds crushed by a car that your thread title ‘are the police being thrown under the bus’ is insensitive.

Exactly

the parents seem nothing but reasoned when interviewed - they just want the truth

one of the mothers said she would live with all broken bones just for the truth

Surely though it is not a crime to be wealthy or to hire good lawyers? I think some of the posts on this thread show even if a trial were to take place it is far from certain a jury won't be prejudicial especially as we have now dragged race into this investigation which certainly want a factor at the outset.

Of course it was a factor - it’s always going to be for people of colour being given justice by the Institutionally racist police force we have

it’s there already - systemically

“Dragged race into it”

it’s there already - in everything we do - it doesn’t need to be dragged in

Sigh. Have you forgotten that this is the Met Police under investigation? Who time after time have been proven to treat victims of crime differently dependent on their race? That force is rotten to the core.

Their track record leads me to believe the families of the children killed were treated differently. I hope they finally get truth and justice.

Oh, and while you’re hand wringing about the impact on the poor driver who has to live with what they did, maybe you could find some empathy and kindness for the mother of one of the girls that died, who continues to endure surgeries for injuries she sustained that day.

And could not hold her child while life support was switched off because of her injuries

her only child…gone

Pippilongstocking2 · 01/05/2026 19:49

Omg the racism on this thread alone

I don’t rember the McCanns being vilified for wanting and persisting for the truth…still

and being told they should let it lie

It feels as though some people want the driver jailed guilty or not. That's revenge, not justice. None of us writing here have any real knowledge of what happened and the aftermath, there is plenty of speculation. there seems to be a bias against rich white women here. Unfair as any other bias.

I have a friend who had her first seizure in her 50s, she initially thought it was an "upgrade" of the migraines she was prone to. She had another and this time her husband saw her so was able to explain what he saw. She was put on meds and hasn't had a seizure since - 15 years and counting.

We have our intuition from years of learning

and it doesn’t fit

this white women is the privileged one in our society structure

the families are wealthy too

There is wealth and there is "Wealth". They are not in the same league.

Yes but they are not paupers as I’m some peoples examples

their status is still that the have resources and are able to pursue justice and get heard

Pippilongstocking2 · 01/05/2026 20:15

I’m not even aware of freemantles financial status

and I’m one of the she doesn’t seem innocent so no unconscious bias for me there!

also I don’t think we can say how much financial wealth she has - even if she’s been in a magazine - look at Michelle moan- my point being she may look financially rich in the face of it not who knows - teh car itself could have been leased - pics in magazines might not actually be of her home

OccasionalHope · 01/05/2026 20:28

Presumably it will all be fully tested in court now,

Again the CPS have brought no charges and they probably have good reason for that....There is a very limited chance of conviction and to my mind this won't change. There is nothing to suggest an epileptic episode did not occur.

It seems to me the parents of the injured and deceased are maybe understandably set that there is some punishment here but that does not make it justice. Meetings with Sadiq Khan and constant lobbying by those impacted may have led to political decisions about 'something must be done' and given the racial optics of the event having officers investigated for racism (despite a large scale initial investigation ) seems to be a solution.

They have brought charges now, so something has changed. I wonder what?

I think the chances of a fair trial are quite remote given the media attention over 3 years. The defence team are quite right to ask questions and the charging decision and it is unclear which new information has come to light. What we do know is that there has been a campaign to get the driver prosecuted maybe at quite high levels. It just seems like desperation to get a prosecution really. We'll see.

It will give the families of the girls chance to see the evidence and have this examined.
Evidence will ensure the fairest trial, for everyone rather than the former no action.

If the defence team are ‘quite right to ask questions’, don’t the parents of two dead children and (seven badly injured children) also have the luxury of ‘asking questions’? Given that there seems now to be evidence that the original ‘investigation’ was flawed?

Your attitude to the victims and their families is disgraceful. You are, as I have and others have said previously, strangely over invested in this. I wonder why.

I'd correct that and say a campaign for the truth,...

Agree and I don’t think this approach is doing a good PR job at all.

BeckyAMumsnet · 05/05/2026 12:37

Hi all.

A quick note from us – as this is now an active case, we need everyone to be mindful that it’s subject to contempt of court rules.

That means no speculation about motives, background, or guilt, and no posting anything that could prejudice ongoing proceedings. We know people will want to discuss developments, but please stick to what’s been officially reported and avoid adding your own theories or assumptions.

If you’re not sure what’s appropriate, it’s safest to err on the side of caution.

You can read more about the rules around contempt of court here: https://www.gov.uk/contempt-of-court

Thanks for your understanding.
