Do you think 500ml of liquid is enough a day ?

So I’ve been feeling crappy lately
Tired,achy muscles /bit headachy etc
Then I realised I don’t really drink much
I struggle to even drink a 500ml bottle of water.
i will have 1/4 of a cup of tea on a morning then sip water all day and by the end of the day there will still be some left in the 500ml bottle.

Could this be making me feel a bit crap ?
how much do you all drink ?chat

What colour is your wee?
If you are getting enough fluid it should be straw-coloured (the paler the better).
You can also get fluids through food, too.
I drink about 2l water per day and, once you get used to it, you are not constantly rushing to the loo!

user7463246787 · 14/04/2026 12:02

That doesn’t sound much to me. I drink 4 pints of water, 5 or 6 cups of tea. Maybe a couple of glasses of wine if its the weekend/school holidays. Extra water if exerting myself in any way or if it’s hot weather.
If I don’t drink plenty I will get UTI’s. If I get dehydrated I get a sharp headache.

CraftyNavySeal · 14/04/2026 12:02

It’s worth a go. Even some sugar free squash is fine, I like hot Ribena!

Another thing to consider is lack of salt. I used to feel awful after exercise and it was because I was losing salt.

If you don’t eat processed food then don’t skip salt in your cooking.

DilemmaDelilah · 14/04/2026 12:02

No - I don't think 500ml is enough. I drink about 3 litres, mostly water, but also decaf coffee and the occasional diet bitter lemon.

givemushypeasachance · 14/04/2026 12:06

What do you mean that you "struggle" to drink more? Why are you making a cup of tea and only drinking 1/4 of it? Even if you don't particularly feel thirsty, can't you just pick up a cup or a glass and drink it down. A small glass is only a couple of swallows. If you set an alarm for every two hours, then stand up, go to the sink, pour yourself a small glass and stand there till you've drunk it, till you get more in the habit of drinking.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 14/04/2026 12:08

No. My urological surgeon says 3 litres a day is the optimum. I don't like water so I can only drink it by flavouring it with those little Robinson fruit juice minis (has no added sugar). You can get used to increased quantities over a few weeks and it does make you feel better.

Lomonald · 14/04/2026 12:10

Ideally you should drink 2 litres a day,.which is about 8 glasses, if you don't like water tea or weak squash is fine, why don't you like drinking ?

luluxxx · 14/04/2026 12:11

I’m just always rushing around that it’s the end of the day and I haven’t drank much
i never really feel thirsty

OP I sympathise as I too don’t drink enough I’ve had days where I’ve sat down with dinner and been really thirsty only to realise that’s prob the first time I’ve had a drink all day. I am much better now but I do understand it. At 500ml you’re falling way short of the recommended daily intake. The suggestion with the reminder/ alarm is a really good way to ensure you drink regularly.

luluxxx · 14/04/2026 12:11

@givemushypeasachancenormally I make one and start drinking it as I’m getting ready ..then it’s cold so il leave it

I drink about 3 litres a day. Mainly water but that includes a couple of cups of coffee. Honestly, I don’t even have to try as drinking just comes naturally to me as my body doesn’t feel right if I don’t water. Not a headache as such but just a general irritable uncomfortable feeling when I’m a bit thirsty.

as someone else said, the colour of your urine will show you if you are dehydrated. Pale straw colour is ideal

My husband is like this he never feels thirsty anyway can you maybe make time to drink maybe a carton of fruit juice or something,

Spaghettea · 14/04/2026 12:14

No. I'm already 1 litre down today and I'm WFH.
I never had headaches or yellow wee. Generally feel very well.

RudolphTheReindeer · 14/04/2026 12:14

Yes it definitely could. I struggle every summer with being so incredibly tired and realised last year it's because I don't drink enough. I'm now one of those annoying people who carries a water bottle everywhere

somanychristmaslights · 14/04/2026 12:15

I feel awful if I don’t drink enough during the day. Think of it like a wilting flower, you need to water it! Set a timer on your phone or something. Every hour go and drink a glass of water. I bet you’ll feel so much better.

givemushypeasachance · 14/04/2026 12:16

I just drink tea and coffee cold I'm not fussed, but you can get insulated mugs, reheat it, make another one... or once it's a drinkable temperature, just drink it. Again a small mug of tea is only a couple of swallows and it's gone!

I may be biased as I have several Dunoon Glencoe mugs which are 0.5 litre mugs and have coffee or tea from those every hour or two during a work day.

givemushypeasachance · 14/04/2026 12:21

If you search on the play store or apple store there are several water tracking/drinking apps that gameify the process, like Plant Nanny, to get you into the habit of drinking more.

I've got a friend who sometimes comes into the kitchen at like 6pm and says oh I've got a headache, I've only drunk one cup of tea all day, and I must say I have very limited sympathy. It's not like he's been out in the desert breaking rocks with a harsh overlord restricting his water breaks - he's in an office or a house, both of which have taps and cups and glasses. It's basic self-care, drink something!

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 14/04/2026 12:21

Yrs, I think it could well be a factor in how you feel.

I don't drink masses.
I drink with food - so a pint with breakfast, lunch and dinner. That said, I'm on my lunch break now, ive eaten the food, and my water bottle is sat next to me - full.

I know i need to drink it, but im not thirsty, and really aren't looking forward to it. So I'll neck it, then forget about it til dinner.

Rather than a small glass every couple of hours, what about a large amount not very often?

BlueBoyd · 14/04/2026 12:22

How old are you, op? Thirst cues can diminish as we get older.

Maybe set an alarm to remind you to drink.

Parsleyforme · 14/04/2026 12:24

I don’t think 500ml a day and less than one cup of tea is enough at all unless every meal is soup. I’m not surprised you feel a bit crap. The liquid doesn’t have to be water, it just needs to be non dehydrating (so not caffeine drinks) so you could get a yummy squash to add to your bottle or some nice cold juice for the morning until you get used to drinking more.

I have to drink a lot to feel well but don’t get particularly thirsty. I find drinking out of glasses easier than a bottle as you can gulp a few mouthfuls quickly rather than having to suck it out in smaller amounts

Jellybunny98 · 14/04/2026 12:25

You are definitely not drinking enough OP and yes that could well be causing you to feel this way. The average woman needs about 2 litres, a man need about 3 litres per day.

Water is so important for so many things, it is essential for pretty much everything your body does.

TinyCottageGirl · 14/04/2026 12:29

This isn't enough at all... I think you need to be having a few more glasses of water and maybe try to fnish the full mug of tea? I drink two teas and probably 5 half pint glasses of water a day which is still under the recommended amount, but I am smaller than average so I convince myself it's probably ok!
I also drink 500ml extra when I do a gym class a few times a week.

FeralWoman · 14/04/2026 12:48

luluxxx · 14/04/2026 12:11

Heat it up in the microwave or use an insulated travel mug so it stays hot.

500ml is nowhere near enough water. Are you
constipated from so little water intake?

If you don’t like water then have wet foods like soup or juicy fruit and vegetables or some type of broth.

BerryTwister · 14/04/2026 12:51

nowhere near enough.
