How to decline a holiday invitation from someone I hardly know

PerkyOchrePeer · 13/04/2026 22:10

I am starting this thread again. As my previous one got mixed up with another one

Someone I hardly know has invited me to take a holiday with them next year. We have nothing much in common and theg are renting a property. I am not interested in where this holiday will be, and wpuld feel quite uneasy staying with someone because I like to do my own thing and cone and go as I please. I dont want to be seen as looking a gift horse in the mouth but I would only go away with someone I know very well. I guess you have to compromise with people but with someone you hardly know it would be too awkward and the person is just an acquaintance

No thank you

PullTheBricksDown · 13/04/2026 22:11

Say it's difficult to get leave booked or that someone has got there first, if you know the dates, so you can't commit and don't want to mess them about.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 13/04/2026 22:13

"Thank you for the holiday idea but it's really not for me. I hope you have an amazing time".

CleanGreenScreen12 · 13/04/2026 22:14

I would say no early on, it's not fair to lead people on, especially keen people who hear a maybe as a yes.

We had this once with a trip to Alton Towers for a birthday trip with work, hardly knew the girl and it was 4 hours in the car. We nodded and smiled at the suggestion, next day she had bought our tickets and wanted £x transferred. Now if I am a no, I am a clear no.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 13/04/2026 22:15

I had this with a foreign hen do it was a friend of a friend but I just said no thanks I can’t afford it or have the annual leave spare as all mine is planned round the kids!

I think they were hoping more people would go as the more that went the cheaper it becomes!

begonefoulclutter · 13/04/2026 22:20

@PerkyOchrePeer How do you know this person?

Screamingabdabz · 13/04/2026 22:22

You just get over the awkwardness of saying ‘thanks but no thanks I’ve got other plans next year’ and nip the whole thing in the bud asap.

ShakyBake · 13/04/2026 22:22

I'd go very, very careful as you might come back without a kidney or liver - the prices on the black market have sky rocketed with some elaborate scams

SwedishEdith · 13/04/2026 22:23

Why are they inviting you if you barely know them? I'm intrigued about people who do this.

wheresthesnowgone · 13/04/2026 22:25

Thanks for thinking of me but it's not for me. Have a lovely holiday.

Silvertulips · 13/04/2026 22:28

Just say no!

Dont try and people please - she can make alternative plans when you are a firm no and not stringing her along .

Tillow4ever · 13/04/2026 22:34

Oh good it’s you again. Do you have ANY normal friendships? Just say no, otherwise you’re going to end up obsessing over this person and their behaviour to you like the last god knows how many.

I more or less said that.

You'd have more fun by yourself than being with someone whose in the least bit annoying. Holidays magnify annoying people by about 10000000

Then what are you hoping to get from this thread? You were invited, you’ve declined - surely that’s an end to it.

What’s the issue then? You’ve already said no, there’s nothing more to it.

So. What’s the point of this post??

Waste of my time then, thank you.

No problem. I’m not usually so blunt or harsh, but I’ve tried to help give advice so many times in good faith only to see all advice given by everyone ignored, then she just leaves the thread never to return and a few days later it’s a new thread with a new situation.

I would be happy to help the op if she ever posts about what is truly the issue if that makes sense?
