Do your children look alike? Do you look like your siblings?

Having had a family get together recently, my niece got us thinking. She said we (her aunts and uncles) looked quite different but when we were together, she could sort of tell we were related. For information, me and my siblings are different heights, builds, hair colour etc. We definately share the same parents.

My DC also are quite different in personality and looks too as are my DGC.

Just interested really.

My DDs don't look anything alike, DD1 looks like me and DD2 is more like DH. They have the same coloured hair but the rest of their features are very different.

It's the same with my siblings and I. We are all very different and you wouldn't think we were related if you didn't know us.

DH on the other hand does have a resemblance to his siblings, they're not really alike but similar enough that you can tell they're related.

My Gran had photos with all her 11 grandchildren from her 4 children for her 80th and 90th birthdays. It's interesting to see who looks whom and I doubt anyone could pick out the actual siblings. It is generally agreed that the person who looks most like my Mum, for example, is one of my cousins.

Ds and dd don't look alike. Dd looks a lot like me, ds looks like my brother. When ds was a tiny baby sometimes all I saw was my brother staring back at me and that was freaky as hell. Weirdly my brother and I share some similarities like the same high cheeksbones but somehow ds looks like him and not me. Dh doesn't really get a look in.

People often say I don't look like my siblings in photos but we are similar in person. The thing is we are adopted separately so no biological connection at all. Same ethnicity, so hair and eye colour is the same. We speak similarly, have common mannerisms and facial expressions. By all accounts one sister and I do the same signature drunk dance! I find it fascinating when families actually look like each other.

My kids all look different, you wouldn't know they are siblings but again hair skin and eye colour are the same. Same shape heads and hairlines too so if you know they are related you can see it. They do look a bit like Dh and I in different ways. You can see who got the nose or brow etc. I'm grateful for that cos with my history I was worried about strange genetic stuff and the possibility of a child with wildly different skin tone or features that would raise a few eyebrows.

My brother, my sister and I all resemble our dad (which mum gets a bit annoyed about 😂). We all have the same facial features, and my brother and I have dad’s brown eyes, though sister has mum’s green eyes. Brother has brown hair like mum, while sister and I have mousy blonde (though we were bright blonde as kids, like dad was).

When we were younger, I hadn’t really considered that we looked alike (particularly my sister and I), but several people who have known one of us first then met the other have expressed how much we look alike. I also bear an uncanny resemblance to my auntie on Dad’s side (again, which mum gets a bit annoyed about 😂), and my brother definitely also resembles my uncle and cousin - again, on dad’s side. Some strong genes on dad’s side, evidently! Interestingly, we all vary in how tanned we are. Mum and dad are quite tanned, my brother and sister slightly less so, and I’m pasty as anything!

Only have the one child and her colouring is more like her dad’s - blonde with the tiniest hint of strawberry blonde, and beautiful blue eyes. I don’t think she looks like me too much, though she’s still quite young with baby-ish features, so I think time will tell if she perhaps has picked up anything of me physically than I can see now! She is pale like me, but then again that’s inevitable - her dad is pale too!
