Do your children look alike? Do you look like your siblings?

Having had a family get together recently, my niece got us thinking. She said we (her aunts and uncles) looked quite different but when we were together, she could sort of tell we were related. For information, me and my siblings are different heights, builds, hair colour etc. We definately share the same parents.

My DC also are quite different in personality and looks too as are my DGC.

Just interested really.

I don’t think I look like my mum or my son but other people mention a striking resemblance.

My nieces (who are cousins) look facially very similar, like sisters. All in the face though as one is short and blonde and the other is taller with long dark hair. I look much more like the dark haired one because I have olive skin and hair, like their mum (who I’m not related to). We have the same surname so people often think she is my DD.

ConnieHeart · 13/04/2026 09:13

I look a tiny bit like my db around the mouth area. We've also got a few of the same mannerisms.

My 2 dds look a little bit alike and are very similar personality wise. Dd1 looks alot like me, dd2 not so much and neither of them look remotely like my OH! They are both very clever though, so they have inherited something from him!

paulhollywoodshairgel · 13/04/2026 09:17

I look absolutely nothing like my sister. We are opposite in every way!! But our kids look alike.. I have a cousin and our kids are REALLY alike. Genes are weird. My son looks more like my dad than I ever have!!

BauhausOfEliott · 13/04/2026 09:24

My brother and I have similar colouring and a somewhat similar facial bone structure but we don’t really look alike, as such. You wouldn’t immediately think “Oh, they’re siblings” if you saw us together.

My sister and I really could not look more different. Completely different face shape, hair colour, eye colour, skin tone. I’ve got straight dark brown hair, extremely pale skin and greenish-grey eyes, and my face is quite angular with prominent cheekbones and quite a square jaw. My sister has blonde, curly hair, big blue eyes, a rounder face and a much more sun-kissed, healthy-looking complexion. We also have polar opposite personalities. I’ve lost count of the times people have told us they can’t believe we’re sisters.

TurnipsAndParsnips · 13/04/2026 09:34

My two DDs look nothing alike. DD1 looks like my Dad’s side of the family and DD2 like my Mum’s. Neither look like DH.

I look very much like my cousin, and have been stopped when out in the area where they live and asked by random strangers if I am Ernie’s eldest. My cousins and I all look like we’re related and when we’re all together at family events, like weddings, other people have commented this.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 13/04/2026 10:08

I don't have DC (yet!), but if family tradition continues, all of the girls will look the same, and the boys would look entirely unrelated to us and each other! Most people don't realise that my brother and I are related. I have very fair skin, brown hair and green eyes. My brother is olive-skinned with black hair and green eyes that are a very different shade to mine. DN is still tiny, so we're yet to see what he's likely to look like when older.

I found a 1930's picture of my grandmother, and she looked alarmingly just like me, albeit with bobbed hair!

PermanentTemporary · 13/04/2026 10:10

Yes my siblings and I look pretty similar despite having different features. We have the same cheekbones/eye angles and quite similar colouring.

OriginalSkang · 13/04/2026 10:11

I look enough like my younger sister that I have been mistaken for her before. We are the same height and colouring on top of just looking like each other

My DD is an only, but she looks absolutely nothing like me in any way. She actually looks the opposite of me in a lot of ways

CoodleMoodle · 13/04/2026 10:14

I don't think either DC look like me or DH. DD and I have very similar hair, and DS looks a bit like DH did when he was a child. Other than that, I'm not sure if you could match us in a group.

I used to think DD and DS looked alike but not so much anymore. You could probably pick them out as siblings though!

mindutopia · 13/04/2026 10:17

Yes, my dc look very much alike. In fact, as toddlers, I sometimes struggle to tell them apart in photos initially, even though they are a boy and a girl. Funny enough, dd looks a lot like me at that age and she looked identical to dh’s (maternal) cousin as a child. They also look very similar to Dh’s (paternal) cousin’s two children who are similar ages. We must all have very similar genes! 😂

CarolinaLiar · 13/04/2026 10:21

I find this really interesting. Our children look nothing like each other nor like other me or my husband. One has black hair with dark brown eyes, the other has mousey hair and light green eyes.

I have 3 sisters and none of us resemble another in any way. My husband has 2 brothers and they are all very alike.

mondaytosunday · 13/04/2026 10:33

I don’t think my kids look alike. But each look a bit like me and their father. Same with my siblings. I look closer to one but as we age (we are in our 60s now) we all look more like our mother. Plus similar expressions and movements increase the resemblance.
For our wedding photos my DH and his five brothers look like six random men. They ranged from 5’ 7” to 6’ 4”, fair, dark, slight, chunky - really hard to see any resemblance between any of them!

Fortheloveofpizza · 13/04/2026 10:34

I don’t look like my sister and my children aren’t alike either. Think it’s a bit sad tbh

Gemstonebeach · 13/04/2026 10:39

My siblings and I all look very similar, to the point where I get asked if I am their sister. My daughter looks like me but has her dad’s colouring, my son is identical to my brother facially but has his dads build.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/04/2026 10:40

I have five. Three of them look more like their dad's family and two look like mine, although people say when they are together they can tell that they are siblings. Four have hazel/brown eyes, darker skin and hair and one is blonder with blue eyes and fair skin.

I, apparently, look like my brother, which I am rather prickly about. No woman wants to show pictures of their family to others and hear 'Oooh, don't you look like your dad/brother?'

ETA: The fair, blonder one looks so much like his cousins that, when one cousin got married people were wondering why 'his brother' (ie, my son, his cousin) wasn't in the immediate wedding party.

thesugarbumfairy · 13/04/2026 10:41

I don't think my boys look alike at all. They never have. No-one would look at them and think 'brothers'. But I guess they have some similar facial features if you look hard. They have totally different body types, and totally different personalities.

DinoLil · 13/04/2026 10:43

Years ago, at work, a photocopier engineer arrived. He said that I was busy having two jobs. Turns out he had been at the company my sister worked at and thought we were the same person!

FatCatPyjamas · 13/04/2026 10:46

My DC look nothing alike. One looks like me and the other looks like his paternal grandmother. I found this very odd as my siblings and I are ridiculously similar, to the point people who know just one of us will "recognise" the others.

SparklyGlitterballs · 13/04/2026 10:46

I have a brother and we're quite alike with features, colouring etc. I have two DDs and they're polar opposites in height, colouring, body size, personality, everything.

Gardenquestion22 · 13/04/2026 10:47

There are 4 of us, as we get older my eldest brother looks the spit of my mum and another brother my dad (even down to the walk). Me and my sister look like my mum.

DH's son - doesn't particularly look like him - till we found DH's old student card - and my God they are definitely related! It's the same person.

Orlando27 · 13/04/2026 10:50

My middle two are very alike - my iphone struggles to tell them apart on my photos - there’s 4 years between them and when the younger started high school one of the teachers told him they knew whose brother he was straight away lol.
My other two share similarities too, they all have the same nose and bushy eyebrows! I don’t think I look like my siblings but can see myself in my mum a lot.

Mix56 · 13/04/2026 10:51

My Brothers & I all have the same smile( eyes crunch up the same. & Big forehead heads
My Kids have the same shape nose
& their eye shape /smiles same as us , as do their cousins

Kadiofakit · 13/04/2026 10:51

My DS's are not alike at all. Except for height, they have very different body shapes, different eye colour, different hair colour, different pigmentation. The youngest one is blondish but with very fair skin and burn easily, few freckles so almost a failed ginger, blue eyes. The older one is dark, green eyes and tans incredibly quickly and goes really dark. A real mash of our genetic heritage as I have loads of ginger relatives and my husband has darker skin, hair and green eyes.

XelaM · 13/04/2026 10:53

Me and my brother absolutely have nothing in common looks-wise. He looks more like our grandfather (dad's side): blonde blue-eyed and I look more like our grandmother (mum's side): brown hair and eyes. Both tall like our dad though

HotChocolateBubbleBath · 13/04/2026 10:58

Genetics are funny. I take after my dad and my sister takes after my mums mums side, but mum takes after her dads side, so my sister is like my aunt. When my sister and cousin were out with my aunt. Everyone thought my sister was her daughter, but not my cousin as she took after her dad. I know that’s all confusing to work out, as genetics are just like that, lol

My DS(24) looks like me, but when he’s with his dad people say he’s just like him. My DD(20) is like my sister in law, nothing like me at all, but then she’s much much taller than my SIL.

I used to think my DH was his mums double but as he ages he looks more like his dad.

Genetics fascinates me.
