Do your children look alike? Do you look like your siblings?

Having had a family get together recently, my niece got us thinking. She said we (her aunts and uncles) looked quite different but when we were together, she could sort of tell we were related. For information, me and my siblings are different heights, builds, hair colour etc. We definately share the same parents.

My DC also are quite different in personality and looks too as are my DGC.

Just interested really.

My DD is an only child so obviously nothing to compare her to! I am the youngest of 3,I have 2 older brothers and I have similarities to one of them,we both have blond hair and blue/grey eyes and very fair skin. But he is naturally very slim, never been overweight in his life whereas I am a bit overweight and have always had weight problems. My oldest brother looks nothing like us,he has brown (well HAD dark brown hair before he went grey he is 70 now),brown eyes and darker skin. I think he takes after my late Ddad who was quite dark, whereas my other brother and I i take after our late Dmum who was much fairer skinned with light brown hair. I used to wonder where our blond hair came from, what with neither of our parents being blond, and apparently my grandfather on my Ddad's side had blond hair. He died 4 years before I was born.

Doyouknowdanieltiger · 13/04/2026 17:42

My two youngest do (same dad) apart from hair colour (boy blonde girl brown) . Both the image of their dad.

I look nothing like my half siblings, although their is doubt about my biological father.

wasabeckett · 13/04/2026 18:13

My sister and I are in our 60’s and there are 2 years age difference. We look very alike and are sometimes mistaken for each other. I didn’t realise how alike we were until we discovered we both can open each others iPhone using facial recognition!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 13/04/2026 18:35

Ds1, 3, dh and his youngest brother are like snapshots of the same person at different ages. Ds 2 is an amalgam of me, my dad and my fil(same deep set eyes). Dd is a taller, prettier version of me.
I really look like my dm and my oldest sister, but with a lot of my dad. His side of the family are unbelievably alike.

BusySittingDown · 13/04/2026 18:46

My children look nothing alike. Oldest is tall, with dark blonde hair and blue eyes. The youngest is smallish (well, 5'4 but she's probably not finished growing yet. The other one has stopped growing) with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. They don't even look related.

However, they were identical as new borns. When I gave birth to DD2 I felt like I had copied and pasted DD1. They were really similar.

There is 10 years between my sister and I. I'm not sure that we look alike. We have similar colouring, I guess. Both have same hair, eye and skin colour. She's always been chubby, like our mum, and I've always been skinny, like our dad. People always used to say that she looked like mum and I looked like dad. In the last few years of my mums life my mum went terribly thin and people started to say that my mum and I looked alike, which I could now see.
This last year my sister has lost lots of weight and she said that she keeps seeing glimpses of me when she looks in the mirror, which I think I'm also starting to see. Poor bugger! She was lovely before 😂, now she looks like me!

boringperson123 · 13/04/2026 19:23

Yes all 4 of us get told we look freakishly similar.

The weird thing is my mum and dad have totally different features (blonde vs brunette hair, brown eyes vs blue eyes) yet somehow made 4 children who all have the exact same very distinctive shade of green-blue eyes and blonde (now dark blonde/light brown as adults) hair. I wish I could post a photo because I want to know if it’s as unusual as I think it is.

Whyamiherenow · 13/04/2026 19:28

My brother and I look alike in the eye / nose / mouth area. But he is blonde ish and I have dark hair. However, my son looks almost identical to a mini version of my brother and they have the same personality. So much so that when my son is a little bit naughty and I want to tell him to stop doing something, sometimes I call him my brothers name. Which is awkward. Genuinely feel like I gave birth to my brother complete looks and personality.

EveryDayisFriday · 13/04/2026 19:30

No mine are chalk and cheese quite strange that DH, Me and our siblings follow the same colourings on birth order.

DD1, Me and DH (first borns) average height, brunette with olive skin.
DD2, BIL and DB (second borns) taller, sportier, blonde and fair skinned.

NotMyRealAccount · 13/04/2026 19:32

My sisters and I don't look particularly alike, though you wouldn't argue with the fact that we're sisters if you saw us together, but our voices are almost identical.

AnnaQuayRules · 13/04/2026 19:34

My parents had dark hair (dad) and blonde hair (mum). Both pale skinned. They had two children - me and my sister.

I have red hair and pale skin. My sister has dark hair and much darker skin. We don't look alike as we have different shaped faces, different noses etc.

We both have two children. Each of us has one child with red hair and one child with dark hair. My two are not at all alike in looks or in personality, neither are hers. But one of hers looks incredibly like one of mine.

patooties · 13/04/2026 19:35

The eldest and youngest look a lot like me. The middle one looks like MIL. They do all resemble each other, but I don’t see any of me in DD2 yet she is the image of her sister too? Weird!
I look like all my sisters - our children all look like each other and could be siblings.

SwedishEdith · 13/04/2026 19:45

I look like both of my daughters but they don't look like each other.

TinselandTiarasRightNow · 13/04/2026 19:47

I look more like my cousin on my dad's side and my sister looks more like my cousin on my mums side.
Im taller with a bigger frame and bigger features. I cannot see much similarity.

VivienneDelacroix · 13/04/2026 19:48

My middle and youngest look alike.
My eldest not so much.

My brother and I don't look alike, but DH and his brother are very alike.

saycheeese · 13/04/2026 19:48

Myself and my sister don't look alike except for maybe slightly facially, she is tall and slim, I'm short and bigger. Shes really pale with red hair, im olive skinned with dark hair.
I have two girls of my own and basically copy pasted one of each of me and my sister, it's bizarre to look at photos of us growing up my two girls are identical to us. My grandma loves it when I take them to see her, she says it's like going back 30 years.

dizzydizzydizzy · 13/04/2026 19:48

My DCs look very alike. People used to think they were twins. DB and I also look very alike.

TinselandTiarasRightNow · 13/04/2026 19:50

Also my phone thinks my son is either me or my sister although we don't look alike. There is a picture of my dad when he's about 5 and it could be my son.

Philandbill · 13/04/2026 19:52

Genetics are fascinating. DD1 looks very like one of her paternal cousins, you'd think that they were brother and sister. DD2 does not look like either of them. My cousin's son is the spitting image of my brother, he looks more like my brother than DBs own son.

KnitWitsAnonymous · 13/04/2026 19:53

I have three nephews who are brothers. They look very different from each other but the middle one is VERY like his cousin

My brothers were very different as children but are getting more alike now they are older

WoollyandSarah · 13/04/2026 19:59

My DDs look completely different. They are like someone has cut up a photo of each of me and DH and then turned them into two new photos. I do feel sad for DD1 as she's got my very easily burnt skin tone, DD2 tans beautifully.

CamillaMcCauley · 13/04/2026 19:59

My brother and I have similar colouring (fair skin, green eyes, mid-brown hair) which oddly is unlike either our mum (olive-ish, blue eyes, black hair) and dad (freckles, green eyes, red hair).

Facially though, he’s the spitting image of my mum whereas I don’t look much like my dad or mum, but more like dad’s grandmother.

My son is the spitting image of me, with the same colouring. My daughter looks somewhat more like her dad (olive skin, blue eyes, black hair) but her colouring is more like mine but paler (dark blonde hair, milky skin, blue eyes). She and her brother (who she is close to in age and height) often get mistaken for twins.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 13/04/2026 20:01

Genetics is a weird thing.
As a baby DD1 was the spitting image of DH, as a baby and there was no doubt she was his, she looked nothing like me.
DD2 again arrived looking like her sister and mostly like DH, we struggle to tell which DC is which in old photos (not helped as they both wore the same clothes).
Even as older children they still looked like DH and it was often remarked by strangers how alike they were.
Now they are adults and whilst still similar, my eldest is much more like me and my family, The youngest could be a clone of DH sister, and looks much more like her than her own DC.
I look like my siblings at surface level.

Leapintothelightning · 13/04/2026 20:05

I look like my mum, my sister looks like our dad. But we look alike when we’re together you can tell we’re siblings. I look more like one of my cousins than my sister though!
My 2 DDs don’t look anything alike and neither look like me - one looks like DH’s maternal side and the other looks like DH’s paternal side. But my youngest DD is the same age as my nephew and she looks like him. Genetics are mental!

northernplatform · 13/04/2026 20:58

Me & DSIS don’t really look alike and our DHs look v different, completely different build height etc BUT our daughters look like siblings - in fact if you put them in a line up you’d probably guess her oldest is mine & her youngest and my DC are hers!

user2848502016 · 13/04/2026 21:09

My DDs looked a lot like eachother as babies but now that they’re older apart from similar colouring they’re not very alike. I don’t think you would guess they’re sisters but if you knew you would then see similarities.

Same with my siblings and me, we don’t look that similar and all have different colour hair and eyes but we’re all similar to both our parents so when all together people would assume we’re related.
