Do your children look alike? Do you look like your siblings?

Having had a family get together recently, my niece got us thinking. She said we (her aunts and uncles) looked quite different but when we were together, she could sort of tell we were related. For information, me and my siblings are different heights, builds, hair colour etc. We definately share the same parents.

My DC also are quite different in personality and looks too as are my DGC.

Just interested really.

I am similar build and colouring to my sister but facially I’m more like my dad and she is like my mum. My two kids I have thought for years are nothing alike, their colouring is wildly different (DS olive skin, dark brown hair and chocolate eyes, DD ginger hair, pale skin and blue eyes), she’s small for her age and he is a giant etc but recently DD was showing her teacher some photos including her brother, who went to a different primary, and the teacher exclaimed how similar they look (angular faces and nose shape were the features she picked up on). So I think it’s probably really hard to be objective about our own kids or people we know well!

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 13/04/2026 11:03

I find this fascinating, me and my siblings look similar but we have very different personalities and are quite different heights.

With my DC, eldest and youngest looked very similar (I sometimes have to look twice at photos when they were toddlers to know who it is) but while they have similar features now, they look very different. Middle and youngest now look the same.

Although, they all have very different personalities.

Two of my nephews look just like my sibling.

EndorsingPRActice · 13/04/2026 11:07

My DSis, DB and I all look quite alike. We all resemble our mum. We have similar colouring and also use similar mannerisms and people comment on it. My DSon is very like me but DD looks like DH and is not obviously related to me at first glance.

Whosthetabbynow · 13/04/2026 11:18

Not really and not really but you can see we are all related

blackberryhill · 13/04/2026 11:27

My brother and I don't look alike - he is slim, fair haired and blue eyed, I am not slim with hazel eyes and darker hair. Our faces don't look massively similar either.

My DC is an only (for now) but my niece and nephew definitely look related - similar colouring and features to each other.

VoltaireMittyDream · 13/04/2026 11:27

I looked nothing like my parents or my sibling for most of my life. Different colouring, different body shape. Everyone commented on it.

But my voice was so similar to my mother’s that even close family members couldn’t tell us apart on the phone.

And in middle age I am the spit of my father, (unfortunately - not my elegant mother). And my brother and I look very alike these days as our faces hollow out and our bone structure becomes more prominent.

StarlaBell79 · 13/04/2026 11:33

Definite family resemblance between me and my siblings (and my parents). My son looks a lot like my nephew (sister's son) and my brother, so strong family genes coming through our line. I can't really see a resemblance between DS and me, or between DS and his dad though. 🤔

XelaM · 13/04/2026 12:20

My daughter looks absolutely nothing like me - you wouldn't even be able to tell we're related. She's a spitting image of my ex-husband's family though. Ironic as he doesn't see her at all.

jenn88 · 13/04/2026 12:24

I have a brown haired brown eyed DD and a very blonde, blue eyed DS! They do not look alike at all!!

scoobydeedoo · 13/04/2026 12:34

There's 4 years between my girls, as babies they were identical but as they've both gotten older they look similar but definitely wouldn't be mistaken for the other. I sometimes look back at pictures of older DD when she was younger DDs age and see such a resemblance but then notice the fuller face and different face shapes. You could probably tell they were sisters though.

Me and my DSIS don't look anything alike, but we both have different dads and seem to each take after them and not our mum.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/04/2026 12:43

My DC look enough alike that family resemblance is obvious when you know, but as they are different sexes and have different colouring, it’s not immediately obvious.

I look nothing like my only whole-sibling.
I look very much like one of my half-siblings.
DH and his brother also look very unalike.

RunAwayWithMeeee · 13/04/2026 12:47

All 4 of my children look the same. People often comment including strangers. I don’t look like my siblings but we have different fathers

Awrite · 13/04/2026 12:49

I look like one brother, my sister looks like the other.

My two kids don't look hugely alike but not unlike either.

All the cousins could believably be siblings.

Funnywonder · 13/04/2026 12:55

My two boys don’t look alike at all. The eldest looks more like me and the youngest looks exactly like his dad. Both have my grey eyes, but other than that they are very different. My eldest is an absolute clone of my brother. My brother and I resemble each other - you would definitely know we were siblings.

whattheflipz · 13/04/2026 12:58

Two are clones 🫣

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 13/04/2026 13:36

I look exactly like my dad and my sibling looks exactly like my mum. But we look nothing alike 🤣

My eldest looks like and my youngest looks like my husband. They looked so similar as babies but now they have similarities but in a room you wouldn’t guess they were siblings.

Genetics are wild!!

TheLurpackYears · 13/04/2026 13:56

My dc looked incredibly alike when they were little, born 3 years apart, enough for strangers to stop me and tell me.
At my ex-ILs 40th wedding bash several male family friends were bugging up FIL in how strong his genes were to have generations of offspring who looked like him. The ILs are a bit obsessed with how DS looks like his dad, I am a mere gestational vessel.

SassyButClassy · 13/04/2026 14:10

My DC thinks me and mum look like twins but DH says I don't look like any of my family and swears I was adopted 🤔

thebeautifulsky · 13/04/2026 14:29

Thanks for your responses. I find this all really fascinating. My brother has one DGD and she looks identical to him as a baby, curly hair, dimples, left handed. She even laughs like him! I guess all the genes from both sizes get put in the 'pot', shook up and out comes either a totally unique looking baby or a clone of a relative.

. I have a DS and a DD. When they were young they looked absolutely alike but as DS grew up his looks changed. He looks like my side of the family while his sister looks like her father’s family. I have two sisters and we simply don’t look alike at all. On the other hand, I have a friend I have know for over 45 years and we are often asked if we are sisters.

QueenElle · 13/04/2026 14:45

Me and my sister are absolute opposites in height, weight and hair colour. We look nothing alike - and neither of us look like our parents. My husband and his sister again look nothing like each other but one is definitely MIL and the other FIL.

Interestingly though, one of my sons and one of my sisters sons are so alike they’re always assumed to be brothers but could probably pass for twins!

Emmz1510 · 13/04/2026 15:05

I only have one child so I can’t say. She’s the spit of my mother in law but she does have little bits of me and my husband in her looks.
I have two sisters and I don’t think I look particularly like either of them. I’m maybe a little similar to my youngest sister but I don’t think anyone would immediately place us as sisters. Both my sisters have naturally curly hair although they wear it straight and both are naturally fairer than me. I’m very dark haired and it’s bone straight. Im similar to my dad in colouring and temperament. My youngest sister is most like our mum. My middle sister is like dad facially but that’s it.
My two nieces who are sisters look quite alike. Both have strawberry blonde hair be similar features although one is more like her dad and the other is more like my sister.

Xiaoxiong · 13/04/2026 15:09

I didn't think I looked at all my brother (we have very different colouring)... I always thought I looked like our dad and he looked like our mum.

But then I did one of those silly facetune apps where you can take a photo of yourself and put a filter on it to make it male. It literally was my brother staring back at me out of my phone screen!

RebeccaRedhat · 13/04/2026 16:12

Me and my brother are so similar. If I do the Snapchat filter of a bald man, I just look like him and its a bit scary! Lol. My son looks hustvlike my brother did growing up too. My husband and his brother are also similar at the same age, but there's 8 yrs between them and they don't really look too much alike in real life. Dh is bald, BIL isn't. His 2 sisters look nothing alike each other, or the boys! However my eldest daughter looks like my eldest SIL and my youngest daughter has the same colouring as my younger SIL. FWIW sils are children 1&3 in the family and my girls are also children 1&3 in our family. So, to cut a long story short 🤣🤣🤣 mt children look nothing like each other.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/04/2026 16:33

DSis and I look nothing like each other, but we look like each other’s daughters.
