I get up at 5.30-6am week days. I even like being in bed for 9.30pm on a weekend night too.

I'm 55 and am often in bed at 7:30...9 pm is a late night for me.
I don't really watch TV, I'd rather read so why not do it in bed...I'm like previous poster...my bedroom is calm, clean, uncluttered and I find it's my sanctuary.
I'm fortunate to be able to hear the sea with the windows open ...bliss.
I spend half the week traveling or in London..I tend to go out then so will be up later

I tend to use the weekend to catch up on this. My social life is minimal. I’m a teacher (plus other responsibilities in school) and the job absolutely drains me. I’m in work by 7.30am so must get up 5.45am.

I'm up at 5.40am too but I just couldn't go to bed as early as some of these times. I'd feel like I was missing out on life. I'm in bed for 11pm most nights.

Nowvoyager99 · 13/04/2026 06:42

Yes, I am a lark. I like to be in bed by nine at the latest and am up at six. I love my sleep.

You do them during day time hours. I rarely watch TV, apart from breakfast news. If there’s something I want to watch, I’ll watch it during the weekend, as most stuff is online to watch at convenience anyway. For me hobbies take place during the day, and so does socialising. I will occasionally go out in the evening, but does exhaust me all week if its weekday as i’m up early.

I love that watching TV is being treated as a task to be completed alongside housework 😂
@Cricketashes lots of people aren't bothered about watching telly and read books in bed instead.
Getting up at 05:30 for work means midweek socialising ends promptly at 9pm.
Housework gets done, same as if waking hours were 07:00-22:30.

But what are you doing during those extra hrs you’d be missing out on? Watching TV? For me I get those hours back, but early morning. I love being up at the crack of dawn and once I move house in the summer i’ve got plans for early morning bike rides along the river. When I was younger i’d have been horrified at the thought of going to bed early, but now I am older I love it!

Must say none of my friends the same age go to bed as early as me, but they all have partners whereas i’m single (kids are young adults) so guess you have to compromise a little then.

GetOffTheCounter · 13/04/2026 06:56

I thought it was going to much more extreme. I spent a couple of years in bed and asleep by 6.30.But that ended up being because I had an untreated illness that the GP fobbed me off about which wasn't diagnosed until I went private.

Now I am up at 6 and in bed by 9 and I feel I am doing pretty well!!

I’m just completely exhausted and have no social battery left after a million micro decisions at work. I’ve been teaching 20 years but running a secondary classroom (plus meeting complaining parents) still floors me.

It’s not like people are choosing this. They’re exhausted. Without going to bed, they’d literally cease to function. I have chronic fatigue so I literally do cease.

RampantIvy · 13/04/2026 07:04

I'm not morally superior about TV watching. I like a good detective drama series. I also enjoy reading. My evening social life starts and finishes earlier than it used to, but that's how I like it.

I find as I get older I need less sleep and tend to be in bed by 11 and up at 6.30.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 13/04/2026 07:12

@KillTheTurkey I feel your pain. Some days everything seems to be a negotiation. I’m taking the traditional route - I have a ‘first sleep’ , like folk used to in the very olden days, between 8pm and 10pm, usually sitting on the sofa, then I watch some TV or read before heading up to bed about 11.30 and usually sleeping through until 5. I should just go to bed earlier.

Nothing to say but commiserations.

I come from a family of teachers. And know that sometimes my Dcs teachers will e-mail us about something at 1 in the morning- more often than they really ought. I can't imagine how bloody awful it must be at times.

NotPhilippaGeorgiou · 13/04/2026 07:15

I used to be affected by jet-lag but one year we went to Disney in Florida and I think my body clock just gave up. Now I sleep when I want to. Get up at 5 bed at about 9 sometimes with a nap at about 2 in the afternoon. It changes though when my working hours need to change.

How do people deal with partners going to bed later? I wake naturally at 4 to 5am so would love to go to bed earlier (currently go at 10pm) but my husband always disturbs me when he goes to bed and then I struggle to get back to sleep.

Separate bedrooms is our solution

Pricelessadvice · 13/04/2026 07:17

Amateurs 😂 I’m in bed at 7.30pm every night 😅Alarm at 5.30am.

SexIsNotNebulous · 13/04/2026 07:23

I go to bed to bed at 7:30 pm sometimes. I prefer watching catch up on my iPad, or reading on my kindle to being downstairs, DH works away, the bed is more comfortable, and it’s warmer upstairs than downstairs and the heating can go off to save money.

My two cats get on the bed with me.

I don’t see any issue, I’m rarely awake after 9pm and am up with the lark before 6 most days.

there’s nothing superior about staying up until 11pm then dragging yourself out of bed for work at 7am.

Tiddlywinks63 · 13/04/2026 07:23

I’m in bed by 7pm, read for an hour and usually get 9 or 10 hours sleep which suits me well.
I’m retired, after a lifetime of working ridiculous hours with long commutes I deserve to do whatever I like.
And even more so after a recent diagnosis that’s going to involve chemo/immunotherapy soon; I’m going to make the most of putting myself first for the first time ever.

AthenaWhite · 13/04/2026 07:23

I love being a lark. My body clock reset when I gave up alcohol 3 years ago. I wake up 4 to 4.30. If I'm off I walk, normally to the nearest town or a long circular walk. In bed by 8 with a good book and music then I drift off when i want. Bliss.

Spaghettea · 13/04/2026 07:23

9:30 sounds late to me 😳.
I'm in bed by 8pm on Fri - sat. Other days are 9pm. I take a while to wind down and listen to the radio.

My alarm is set for 7am.

Corvidsarethebest · 13/04/2026 07:26

I didn't even know people were allowed to go to bed before 10pm!

whattheysay · 13/04/2026 07:27

I go up to bed very early. I like to be in bed watch some tv go on my phone etc so that when I start to feel tired I can go straight to sleep. Generally I wake up between 5 and 6 but if I’ve fallen asleep too early I can wake up at 4 so for that reason I like to go to sleep at about 11pm. I feel totally fine during the day not tired at all which is lucky

EmpressaurusKitty · 13/04/2026 07:30

I get up at 5 to go to the gym before work most mornings, then usually go to bed round 9 unless I’m going out or having friends round.

I’m lucky enough to just share my flat with my cat, so housework is minimal, I batch cook at weekends & she’s happy with my schedule. Especially the early breakfast bit.

No TV here, not because of any superiority but because there’s not enough stuff I want to watch to justify paying for the licence.

I have my main meal at lunchtime, a snack mid-afternoon & unless I have something planned usually spend evenings crocheting / playing with the cat & listening to audiobooks or podcasts.

Nor is it superior to go to sleep at 9 and get up at 5. We all have different lifestyles and body clocks.

62,I'm up at 5.30am weekdays for work,in bed watching TV from 7.30pm,then it's lights off between 9.30-10pm,the other weekend I was so tired I slept from 7.45pm until 6am.

Absolutely. I do what I do because it works for me.

Fuelledbylatte · 13/04/2026 07:47

I started retiring to bed as a protest to the family regarding housework…it would be the case if wait up finishing getting tidy and cleared down whilst they got on with their evening and one day thought- enough! I’m clocking out after dinner and they will be responsible for what they do after then.

i take a long bath, listen to podcasts, do self care (hair masks, nails, moisturisers etc) read or potter until 9 then im tucked up.

I don’t go back downstairs until the morning when I know I’ll be back ‘on’.

Works for me
