Starmer is in trouble here. Do I think he will survive? Probably..

Burnham - not even an MP
Rayner - being investigated for tax evasion (as Housing Minister)
Streeting - too close to Mandelson

He cannot simply blame everyone else everytime something goes wrong. I didnt know, they didnt tell me etc.

Its also probably not his choice to go on 'first' - he doesnt know what Sir Ollie is going to say. This is far far worse that Johnson eating tea and cake. Mandelson could have given state secrets to China, or being blackmailed. Why on earth did he appoint Madelson before he had been security cleared and then show no interest in the result. Maybe he just didnt want to know as he had already announced the position. After all he didnt want to appear stupid and ill informed...oh wait.

I think he will survive.....for now.

PropertyD · 20/04/2026 14:03

Madelson had been fired twice. He was known as the Prince of Darkness. What could possibly have gone wrong when he went through vetting?

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2026 14:05

Fuck me, the LiW thread must be a realy dud

If it was a "set a thief to catch a thief" well just say so and recover some of your integrity. If that's even possible

I guess telling each other how much they hate Starmer is not very entertaining.

Llttledrummergirls · 20/04/2026 14:14

Telling us how much they hate Starmer is fucking tedious.

People who make mountains out of molehills, and cause a storm in a teacup for attention are to be pitted in my view, they must have such dull lives.

PropertyD · 20/04/2026 14:17

I have been through SC vetting. Thought DV was just too much and worked for a big corporate at the time.

There is no way you go through the vetting and no one is allowed to tell your masters the answer. Otherwise what is the point of it? Certainly Sir Ollie shouldnt be going into the finer details of the report itself but Mandelson didnt pass - with hindsight of course he wasnt going to with all his previous contacts. Sir Ollie then decided to not tell Starmer the result - after all he was only the PM!

The Civil Service are known to keep their bottoms covered. Why would Sir Ollie decide himself to pass Mandelson anyway and not tell anyone?

It all stinks to high heaven along with the 'stolen' phone. Funny bearing in mind the importance of the phone that it hasnt been found. Its all wiped of course.

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2026 12:40

Oh the irony

“X is now becoming a very unpleasant and a very dangerous place”

...says Nigel Farage today

Translation:

"Oops, I've been rumbled ...."

TemperanceWest · 20/04/2026 14:23

As posted earlier:

"Ciaran Martin, a former senior civil servant, said: “Not only is there no duty to disclose the details of a vetting case, there is a duty not to disclose them.” Simon McDonald, a former permanent secretary of the Foreign Office, said vetting was a “confidential process”, citing the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010"

So it seems the problem may be the process.

SerendipityJane · 20/04/2026 14:24

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2026 13:01

Maybe he could start his own truth social and call it farage truth or FT for short Wink

Maybe Farage Uncensored ?

Starmar shouldn't hidden behind "process" though he will

placemats · 20/04/2026 14:26

There's not a vote of no confidence today in Parliament. Neither will there be a snap election.

For those in the back.

placemats · 20/04/2026 14:28

Full your boots. Let's be having you!

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2026 14:42

Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice have now written to Reform calling on them to remove any candidate found to have “promoted Covid or vaccine conspiracy theories, make clear that it disowns those views, and explain what steps it is taking to root this problem out of the party”

see my previous comments in this thread on this process

and there isn't a report issued - the only outcome is a yes or no and only the vetting officer knows the reason why its a no, the individual going through the vetting doesnt get told why and most definitely no-one else gets told!!

Are there only two threads? This one, and ‘LiW’?

PropertyD · 20/04/2026 14:47

I agree. But your employer will be told whether you pass or fail. I understand completely why the reasons arent disclosed.

Sir Ollie took it upon himself to overide the decision. Just why??

Yeah, that would be it…..

Said nobody, ever.

PropertyD · 20/04/2026 14:53

No details need to be disclosed on why someone didnt pass the vetting. But the RESULT does need to be disclosed. Otherwise why would someone be vetted in the first place.

I am beginning to think we should amble over there en masse and fangirl breathlessly over Starmer. No need to respect their threads any more.

‘Full your boots’?

The u and the i are adjacent on the keyboard, and calling out typos is the preferred strategy of those with nothing valid to say.
