Neighbours are getting on my nerves already

Had new neighbours in on Friday. They're privately renting and was told by landlord that it was a woman and her son, didn't sound too bad so I thought. Already it's people constantly going there (9am this morning), talking loudly. Now the son has been outside for the last hour bouncing a basketball and throwing it in a bin. I've just had to shut my bathroom window and can still hear it. I'm thinking they've only been there two days and I've had enough already. What would you do?

sounds very normal, who lived there before a deaf mute paralegic?

SockPlant · 05/04/2026 16:05

oh god, not ... renters! get on to their landlord pronto and have them evicted.

DancingNotDrowning · 05/04/2026 16:05

if I'm having to listen to a basketball thumping for hours on end everyday. Which might or might not happen

Chances are it won’t happen. Chances are the boy goes to school and for most of the days he isn’t at home. Chances are he has friends with which he will hang out when it’s not Easter Sunday and he’s expected to be home.

As PP says how you choose to behave in the next week will likely impact the rest of your time in your home, o would choose wisely

Twasasurprise · 05/04/2026 16:11

What would I do? Nothing.

I'd be grateful it was a seemingly normal family next door, rather than the many possible truly terrible alternatives.

DeQuin · 05/04/2026 16:13

We moved house this time last year. Easter weekend was chaos: we had just moved in, stuff everywhere, we had a housewarming party on Good Friday and family over at Easter. Just moving in AND Easter weekend do not mean this is how it is going to be all the time. Hold your nerve.

I gather this is sarcasm?do you have experience of a basketball bounced on concrete constantly a few feet from your windows? Probably not but hope you get to experience it in the future. Most people behave themselves for a while when they first moved in, then the true colours surface. Thanks anyway.

A teenager playing with a basketball is not bad behaviour. In fact it’s good he is being active. He’s not yet had the chance to make pals etc. I expect he will be back to school in a week or so.

Either way children/ teenagers playing outside, bouncing balls etc is perfectly normal, and well within acceptable noise levels. It’s worth looking at headphones/ white noise etc if you are struggling with it. Or if you really can’t bear it then look at moving somewhere remote with no near neighbours.

LlynTegid · 05/04/2026 16:26

Easter is not necessarily representative. See what it is like once school resumes.

Boomer55 · 05/04/2026 16:35

9am, and a child was playing? Jeez, I hope you never get bad neighbours 🙄

OneGreyBiscuit · 05/04/2026 16:54

Ok so I'm going to sign off as I've taken on board comments saying I need to chill out. And maybe I do and I would love to move to the middle of nowhere but unfortunately can't. Im not good with noise (even from my own kids), so the problem lies with me and Im big enough to admit it. I had a knee jerk reaction to the basketball and that's it.

You would think the basketball thing would drive the mum or son or both a bit off the hinge themselves ?

CedarCreek · 05/04/2026 17:05

Just a suggestion but give the boy a basketball hoop, they are not dear from B&M. He and his mother might feel really unsettled in a new home and could maybe benefit from a friendly neighbour?

OneGreyBiscuit · 05/04/2026 15:57

If the idea is I'm some sort of snob who looks down on privately renting I'm going to quickly absolve you of that notion as I'm housing association so don't own either thank you very much. I mentioned privately renting as a go to if I'm having to listen to a basketball thumping for hours on end everyday. Which might or might not happen.

You’re going to move house to a rented one because a boy is playing with a ball for one day?

I knocked yesterday to say id taken her new bins off the street, so I'm not a complete monster. I'm just worried things will get worse.

This isn’t nice.. it’s passive aggressive. YOU didn’t like the bins being on the street, so you took it in to your own hands to make a point.

LilyBunch25 · 05/04/2026 17:08

They've literally just moved in so visitors at this point- new home, might need help as well getting it straight- not exactly unusual. And its Easter weekend, also likely to have visitors, and child playing?

I wasnt going to reply anymore as I've eaten humble pie but this isn't called for at all. We had new bins delivered in the week by the council and I brought her ones around the back as well as my own, in case they were taken by someone walking past as this isn't the most desirable of neighbourhoods and that's passive aggressive, really?

I think you've misunderstood the intention of taking the new bins round. They often go missing when there's a change of resident if they aren't taken in.

Sorry? I also rent through housing association. Your post makes no sense whatsoever🤷

You sound like one of those neighbours. Good luck to them, have a feeling they’ll need it.

Have you read all the comments or just jumping on for a dig. I've admitted I'm in the wrong and I'm still getting flack!🙄

If you don't like a, noise and you've come here to complain that you don't like it, that's perfectly OK!
What's wrong with people, she hasn't declared war, she hasn't asked for anything, just said she doesn't like it!

OP one of the reasons the ball noise has wound you up might be just a basic adjustment to new people's habits. At least you know now that the noise is not someone wrecking something or people passing by and making a racket on purpose. The next time you hear it, just quickly identifying what it is will make things easier to process.
If it turns out to be a regular thing, again, forewarned is forearmed, you can take yourself temporarily elsewhere in your home so it's less noisy.

It ought not to be a problem, but it is unwanted sound at the end of the day, and you definitely need to strategise your response to that if you know it bothers you.
Fingers crossed they don't create sound disturbance through the night, that's a different... erm... ball game (!) altogether.

Endorewitch · 06/04/2026 18:34

I assume you think a lad playing with a basket ball is a nuisance, but unless you live in a field you will have neighbours and you will hear them and hear visitors and chatting etc.
You cant expect them to lock themselves indoors because it upsets you.. unless you live in an isolated area you will have neighbours and some will be noisier than others. Unless they are makiing a lot of noise every night, you arebeing unreasonable.

Allonthesametrain · 06/04/2026 18:39

You tend to get more visitors when you first move in to a new home. Kids will of course play with balls and family seen on Easter weekend. Give them a chance, say hello, find out a bit more about them. Xx

ThatJadeLion · 06/04/2026 18:43

Surprised at the majority of replies. This is unnecessary when it feels never ending on concrete. It makes everyone's day miserable. I feel for you OP. Hopefully it's not too frequent.
