I felt humiliated today

At work today my manager brought us some treats in for Easter, I had a biscuit and was eating it on the shop floor, she actually told me off I felt like a naughty school girl, she told me to hide it, I felt so humiliated, this isn’t the first time she’s done things like this, is she bullying me?

Doesn't matter what it was, it's considered very bad manners to eat on the shop floor.

shes not bullying you, she's trying to maintain standards. She shouldn't have had to tell you.

YES I KNOW

The trouble is the it starts with a biscuit and before long the accused will be bimbling around the shop floor scoffing a meat pie, gravy dripping off her chin, and talking with her mouthful!

If you feel that you are being picked on have you considered constructive a dismissal claim.

What sort of biscuit was it that couldn't wait? If it was a Garibaldi or a fig roll then it is perfectly understandable. A rich tea finger, less so?

in this context of telling you to hide it if you were walking with it suggests shes actually helping you

I don’t know how much clearer I can say I shouldn’t have ate a biscuit on the shop floor

Why did you start the thread?

How come customers come in with food and drinks then when they’re not supposed to?

What is it with these OPs. It is not professional to be eating on a shop floor while you are working end of. You are there to provide a service what if someone came up and you had a mouthful of biscuit. You have came on asking for an opinion and doesn’t like any so the snotty and dismissive attitude is out. You don’t see wrong in your actions you think your manager doesn’t like you because she pulled you on something you did wrong but here we are.

Sometimes on MN a thread will bully an OP from the beginning. This is one of them.
Sad to see.

I’ll just go away then and do everyone a favour, including my manager she would be very pleased if I disappeared

Grow up.

your victimising yourself when you did wrong s customer is there to use the services shop or what ever not help customers that need it they can bend the rules you have a staff code of conduct and rules to follow and just normal etiquette that you feel doesn’t apply to you

That's the real problem then. You might be better starting a new thread about other things she's doing, because this one is based on something you shouldn't have been doing. You'll get better responses that way.

Why does been a customer give them the right to break rules?

Op, are you normally very black and white in your thinking? Or ND? The only reason I ask is that there are some unspoken rules when working in a customer facing role which might be difficult to identify if you are.

As a rule of thumb in ANY customer facing role you need to show yourself to be ready to serve so that a customer isn't put off asking you for help. Staff eating anything on the shop floor is a no no. It can create crumbs/ leave mess on your hands if you're then going to handle stock/ if your mouth is full a customer may decide not to approach you for help etc. So it's just not the done thing.

If a customer decides to break the rules around food/ drink you can ask them to leave, however the downside to that is you then lose their business which stores are dependent on. So that's really at the manager's discretion. So yes there are absolutely a different set of rules or standards for staff than customers. If you have a tea room the expectation would be that you enjoy your biscuit there on your break which is the professional thing to do.

Im not sure (because it's hard to read tone through text) if you are being deliberately obtuse with this or if you're genuinely confused. If you are as stubborn in work as you're showing yourself to be in this thread (whether intentionally or not) then I can absolutely see why it's got your managers back up. However if you are autistic or ND then I would ask for a sit down with your manager, make sure she knows that about you and be really clear with her in how you need her to communicate instructions and then you need to be open to that.

Theirs signs on the door no food and drink allowed, if they ignore surely I can too.

This has to be a pisstake, surely? Either that or Op is very inexperienced, with no understanding that customers are indeed held to different standards of behaviour because - and this is key - they are not in their workplace and therefore are not required to behave professionally, whereas Op IS in her workplace and therefore IS expected to behave professionally.

Op, you were in the wrong. If your general approach to having your errors pointed out is to kvetch and refuse to accept responsibility, then yes you probably have irritated the heck out of your manager. Learn to accept criticism gracefully, accept when you are in the wrong, and above all learn how to use it as a learning tool to help you get better at what you do.
