Which hyped restaurants have you found underwhelming?

Went to happy restaurant london today and I just didn’t get the hype. It was okay as far as restaurants go, but I just found it a little underwhelming considering the hype it gets. DP, DS and my sister absolutely love it, they’ve been about 4 times, dd has been twice, she told me she prefers hard rock and tbh I have to agree with her.
what restaurant hypes did you find underwhelming?.

Roast. Battersea Power Station.
Bog standard Sunday lunch served tepid.

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/03/2026 22:53

In the 1990s. Quaglino’s was all hype and moise and little substance. Never forgotten the disappointment.

The Sea View cafe at The Tate in St Ives.

Poncy and very overpriced, and absolutely nothing I wanted for that money. We went in for lunch and sat down, read the menu, looked at each other, got up and left again.

And the one in borough market - very average!

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 29/03/2026 23:22

Brat in Shoreditch. It was fine, very small portions and random pricing.

Im not an Ivy chain hater, I recognise what they offer and it suits a certain demographic of the market it’s aiming for. It’s basically modern day harvester for those with notions.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 29/03/2026 23:24

My friends parents paid for a group of us to go to the Ivy in London when she was 40.

Ive always maintained that if I can do better myself then there is no point in going out

this was that sort of situation amf
im not the worlds best
cook!

MrsM2025 · 29/03/2026 23:25

The Ivy - like the decor but that’s about it!

NostrilDarmus · 29/03/2026 23:26

The Ivy in York.

I had a shepherd's pie.
They actually brought out a little bottle of Worcester sauce for me to flavour it myself. What the actual fuck?!

I did need it, it was completely and utterly tasteless.

Genuinely one of the worst (and priciest) meals I've had on years and years.

Edited to add: In reply to PP's post, I hated the decor. I mean it was objectively okay but it felt very "try hard". At those prices, I'd rather they got the bloody food right first.

Spooky1408 · 29/03/2026 23:27

Dishoom - way too overrated!

olderbutwiser · 29/03/2026 23:38

Nando’s. Rubbish chicken doused in heat with average chips.

Endofyear · 30/03/2026 08:53

Mowgli Street Food - I was so excited to go, I love Nisha Katona! Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to expectations and it was expensive 😕

BlackCat14 · 30/03/2026 09:56

Betty’s Tea Rooms in York. The afternoon tea there is so famous but it didn’t feel any more special than any others I’ve had for far cheaper, it wasn’t the amazing experience I expected!

Buscobel · 30/03/2026 09:58

The Ivy is style over substance. Fancy decor, not to everyone’s taste obviously, fancy uniforms, fancy dry ice over the afternoon tea offering, but completely underwhelming food, inattentive and not very polite staff.

We arrived quarter of an hour early and were told to go away and come back later. We would have had a drink at the bar, so they lost money.

Savonne · 30/03/2026 09:58

Mountain.

Toastersandkettles · 30/03/2026 09:58

The Tattershall Castle. It was such an awful experience I actually cried!

Savonne · 30/03/2026 09:58

talking about the Ivy, you mean the chain rather than the real one

Savonne · 30/03/2026 09:59

That supposed Michelin one upstairs in Borough market. Very average.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/03/2026 10:08

Can’t agree about the Ivy chain - given that the heritage menu is £20 for 2 courses everyday except Saturday, it makes a very nice evening out in nice surroundings and good service too here in Bath . If I was paying gourmet prices then yes maybe I would say over rated - but I wasn’t , I was paying Bills type money and I’ve been lots

Just came on to say the same.

Agree - their vegan offering was such a faff and really uninspiring. My local Indian does more exciting vegan food for half the price!

JaneBoleyn · 30/03/2026 10:26

Not really the same but Brewdog.

Flipping QR code menu, overpriced, underwhelming and possibly the worst customer service I've ever experienced.

ParadiseIsNoBunker · 30/03/2026 10:30

Wagamama. Everything tastes the same. I know it’s just a cheap and cheerful chain but I’ve been very underwhelmed whenever I’ve had the misfortune.

It’s a shame it wasn’t the night I fell down the steps and gave everyone a good laugh.
Food was awful, I agree.

I always think The Ivy is posh fast food. Can’t fault the decor though.

All owned by the same company now
