Does anyone else have dramatic ice cream van feuds on local Facebook?

Our local ice cream van wars all exploded over the local fb page last year. It was spectacularly entertaining and baffling in equal measure over a period of about 3 weeks.

Well, the sun has been out a bit and it’s all started again with accusations of food poisoning and an angry lady who was seeking ice creams in front of a nursery last friend. Then it turns out the thread was started by the ice cream van lady’s sister and she’s trying to destroy her business. Lots of people with opinions in the comments, accusations of some van owners being paedos (specific with number plates). I’ve no clue if any of it is true but there’s so much drama in the local world of ice cream van sellers I wondered if it’s the same nationally 🤣

Akin to the ice cream wars in Scotland some time ago!

RampantIvy · 29/03/2026 21:58

No.

I think ice cream vans have given up round here.

We had one come round the trading estate where I work, but we now have a freezer in reception that has ice cream that we can buy.

there are genuine ice cream van owners, who just want to give you a 99.

There are genuine ice cream van owners, who may be slightly unhinged.

there are people who operate behind the front of being an ice cream van owner to hide organised crime (drugs mainly.)

BashfulClam · 29/03/2026 22:35

Hopefully it’s not like the Ice Cream wars which was violent. We had one guy complain on facet about the loud chimes every night despite the fact the ice cream can only visits twice a week and one visit is a late Saturday afternoon. He got put right online over the comments.

There was nothing amusing about teh Glasgow ice cream wars. People were murdered. Your comment is in very poor taste.

TeenLifeMum · 31/03/2026 09:54

I don’t think drugs are involved but one of them, who started a smear campaign against others, does sell ridiculously cheaply saying “he just wants to make children smile”. He went to people’s houses during Covid and it was fantastic in my cul de sac. But he does seem unhinged and at one point was selling kittens. His prices make no sense so maybe it is a drugs front (I’m pretty naive about this stuff).

One of our parish councillors got a bit obsessed with unlicensed ice cream vans and he wouldn't hesitate to challenge them to show their pedlar's licence. He saw the van off quite regularly, even with a queue of primary school kids in full view.

The Scottish ice cream wars ended up with a family of five dead. Not so amusing.

Yes an innocent family including young children. My auntie lived beside that family- they were good, decent people. So sad...

Where did I say the ones in Scotland were amusing?

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 31/03/2026 12:42

We had sandwich van wars in our office once.

We were visited by a great value van that stopped at the top of the business park in our drive. Then a different van started to go to the bottom of the park and visit us after.

Then they started coming into the drive at the same time, and finally the first woman came into our office to please for her territory, because the other one used to work for her and was trying to take over her turf. Then they both disappeared overnight.

It was a shame, because the first van was great.

You said it sounded amusing (fair enough)

You then said "Akin to..." That means "Like the...."
So what you wrote suggested that the ice cream wars in Scotland were amusing.

Ah I see.

They were separate points hence the full stop.

I agree. I still remember the image of the burned out flat and all the coffins at the funeral.

In the post to which you refer, I can see a laughing emoji at the end of the first line and an exclamation mark at the end of the second.

The second line begins with ‘Akin to …’ which must surely pertain to the first line. So they are linked not separate points.

Do we live in the same town? We had ice cream van wars last year too. Though I don’t think it was feuding families.

We had a lovely couple start up an ice cream business and post to Facebook. And then 20 minutes later, Bob who sees himself as THE ice cream van man for the town got in there with a big rant about how it’s his turf and he’s been here 15 years! It came across as so wanky though that everyone has rallied around the new couple and they’ve been such a smashing success. People started tracking them down to buy from them in protest to miserable old Bob.

They really have done a wonderful job and do something completely unique and different. Bob just can’t compete. But every now and then he pops up again with a grumbly post about being the original ice cream van and how everyone needs to ‘use it or lose it’. 😂

BoarBrush · 31/03/2026 15:03

Our ice cream van man died a good 3 years ago now so the town was largely excited when a new one started last summer. Didn't take long for someone to complain about his music being too loud for her poor wee darlings. He changed it to something even more ridiculous for a week or two. It's not like he even came late.

When I lived in Glasgow, the guy came round our estate 3 times between 5ish and 10pm, seen many an argument over someone buying the last pack of fags. Was a rather handy van.

MaggiesShadow · 31/03/2026 15:11

I'm not from the UK. How did a fight about ice-cream turn into a family of five dying?!

We didn't have ice-cream wars here but a few years ago, someone tried to get a vigilante group going and it descended into chaos within about a day because everyone kept posting photos of people just going about their normal business claiming they were being nefarious. Very entertaining.

MerlinsBeard87 · 31/03/2026 15:18

So funny I saw this post as I became entranced with a facebook post on this very subject that randomly appeared to me yesterday. I don’t know why, it wasn’t even in my area!
An ice cream man was pointing out that a rogue van was visiting his patch from out of county. People were commenting the rogue van had terrible hygiene, picked his nose etc. Made you wonder if they were friends of original ice cream man out to sabotage or genuine. Either way, I had no idea how territorial ice cream vans could be

At that time in Glasgow the ice cream vans were used to sell drugs. The turf war over it was incredibly violent, and ended with a flat being deliberately set on fire. Six people from the family in the flat, including a toddler, were murdered by the fire.

Jupiterx · 31/03/2026 15:35

Told our local ice cream van woman to piss off.

Wanna wippy 3.50 £4 with a flake come on you know you want one, said really loudly.
I replied with its an ice cream van not a market stall, and for that price you can piss off.
