Does anyone else have dramatic ice cream van feuds on local Facebook?

Our local ice cream van wars all exploded over the local fb page last year. It was spectacularly entertaining and baffling in equal measure over a period of about 3 weeks.

Well, the sun has been out a bit and it’s all started again with accusations of food poisoning and an angry lady who was seeking ice creams in front of a nursery last friend. Then it turns out the thread was started by the ice cream van lady’s sister and she’s trying to destroy her business. Lots of people with opinions in the comments, accusations of some van owners being paedos (specific with number plates). I’ve no clue if any of it is true but there’s so much drama in the local world of ice cream van sellers I wondered if it’s the same nationally 🤣

At that time in Glasgow the ice cream vans were used to sell drugs. The turf war over it was incredibly violent, and ended with a flat being deliberately set on fire. Six people from the family in the flat, including a toddler, were murdered by the fire.

Oh my God, how awful. I thought ice cream vans selling drugs was a bit of an urban legend, to be honest.

I'm not from the UK. How did a fight about ice-cream turn into a family of five dying?!

We didn't have ice-cream wars here but a few years ago, someone tried to get a vigilante group going and it descended into chaos within about a day because everyone kept posting photos of people just going about their normal business claiming they were being nefarious. Very entertaining.

there are genuine ice cream van owners, who just want to give you a 99.

There are genuine ice cream van owners, who may be slightly unhinged.

there are people who operate behind the front of being an ice cream van owner to hide organised crime (drugs mainly.)

I am 99% sure the one that passes in my area is entirely into some criminal activity!

Not here. Sadly, can’t remember the last time we had an ice cream van come up our road - not many kids up here so they probably think it’s a waste of time. I remember the panic of hearing the bell when our kids were little and frantically running around the house trying to find cash before he gave up and drove off 😂

We have literally no actual conversations on our local facebook group (large-ish market town) - it is all adverts for local businesses and events. I don't have a street whatsapp either. I read some threads on here and rather feel I am missing out.

Back then it was a proper thing.

The van runs themselves were also quite lucrative, especially in the new build area because there were often no or very few shops. Scottish ice cream vans are more like mini shops - they sell ginger, crisps, sweets, and cigarettes as well as ice cream - so they were worth a lot. Then add in the drugs angle and it was a lot of money people were fighting over.

The Doyle family were targeted because they refused to pay protection money. That was the other huge money spinner.

Theres a documentary about it all on Prime that I’d recommend to anyone into crime/people docs.

A lady I vaguely know is part of a local ice cream family. Last year they had their van stolen! Many conspiracy theories abounded.

In the post to which you refer, I can see a laughing emoji at the end of the first line and an exclamation mark at the end of the second.

The second line begins with ‘Akin to …’ which must surely pertain to the first line. So they are linked not separate points.

Are you trying to tell me what I meant in my comment?

Not piling on, I'm genuinely curious, what did you mean your original comment to convey?

Interesting to see I’m not alone. I had no clue about the Glasgow mudders - so awful!

we did have a van selling for £4 each when dc were little (about 10 years ago) so I took them to get McFlurry ice creams instead. Our local mc Donald’s is great for those.
