If you're a parkrunner, would this attract or repel you?

I used to be very regular at the same parkrun. For various reasons I've been doing more.tourism lately and haven't been "home" for a while.

There's a regular there who's a bit of a character and seems to have become the videographer.

They now have a sign at a certain point that says "dance for the video" and people do their funny moves as they run past.

It makes an entertaining video, but I would hate to be involved and running past and doing nothing, being "boring" would also make me very uncomfortable.

So I won't be going back until it stops, which is a shame.

Will that be impacting others or would most enjoy it?

I wouldn't do the moves, but I also wouldn't feel boring for not doing so and it wouldn't stop me running. I am sure not everyone does it.

Notanotherusername2626 · 29/03/2026 16:42

I would just ignore with a polite smile. Whoever is recording will get the hint and leave you be I would think.

Halfblindbunny · 29/03/2026 16:44

It would put me off and I think should probably be restricted to the last Saturday of the month or something so people who didn't want to be involved could still come to the others. Have you raised it with the race directors? We don't even have a photographer at our parkrun because people shouldn't have to worry about things like this at parkrun not everyone wants to be recorded for very many and valid reasons.

BlueTikeWonder · 29/03/2026 16:44

You’re probably thinking more about it than they are. I’d go and ignore. When volunteer numbers fall, videographer will be one of the first slots deemed unnecessary. Ignore, ignore, ignore!

LargeAmericanoQuick · 29/03/2026 16:48

Yanbu. I'm sick of the million photos at ours. They're so intrusive.
I just wear a cap and run past with my head down!

illsendansostotheworld · 29/03/2026 16:48

I would hate this! But they tell us to put our thumbs down if we don't want to be photographed or recorded so easy to avoid

HappenstanceMarmite · 29/03/2026 16:50

Why would you give so much thought to it? It’s a public event after all. Just ignore it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Swearwolf · 29/03/2026 16:51

I wouldn’t like it either, I hate when I’m in the photos from ours. I doubt they include everyone in the reel, so if you run past boringly surely they just won’t put you in?

Recently ours have started saying in the briefing that if you cross your hands over your chest as you go past, the photo doesn’t get included in the facebook post. Could you suggest something similar at yours? The whole thing about parkrun is that it’s inclusive and they probably just haven’t thought about it.

FettleOfKish · 29/03/2026 16:53

I would just ignore it, but I do think it’s ridiculous to do it more than once, or once in a blue moon. Thankfully our local Parkrun only ever seems to have a photographer or videographer present if it’s a big event (it’s the venues 500th Parkrun later this year so I’m sure there be a presence for that).

I am ignoring it, by going elsewhere. There are a handful within very easy travel distance for me. I'll just choose one of the others.

For me this doesn't fit with parkrun. We have one run director who likes to make reels but it's only done after the finish line in an area that's easily avoided so if you don't want to do it then no dramas, no-one is ever filmed without actively consenting to it.

Ovaryinatwist · 29/03/2026 17:19

I’d hate this, enough to actually put me off going

GingerBeverage · 29/03/2026 17:20

Have they monetised this footage?

JulietteHasAGun · 29/03/2026 17:22

It would put me off that I might end up on social media. Our park run has a rule that if you don’t want your photo taken by the “official” photographer cross your arms over your chest as you get close to him. Not seen anyone taking videos. Guess you could give him the finger and hopefully you don’t end up on YouTube 🤣

I dont suppose I'd know, but I don't think so.

I am a regular parkrunner. I would ignore it and just run. It wouldn't bother me.

One marshall at ours tells us to smile for the camera. I think "fuckoffIhaterunningandI'mmiserable" and run past them. <<ray of fucking sunshine me 🌞>>

Bookmarkers · 29/03/2026 17:25

I’d think it moderately annoying and naff (it is), but it wouldn’t put me off. I’d just ignore it.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 29/03/2026 17:29

I doubt the front runners do the dance so I wouldn't worry about feeling boring coz if it's ok for them then it's ok for me. This would be a neutral factor for me unless it results in a log jam being created while people slow down for the videographer

Scripturient · 29/03/2026 17:30

I’d say ‘Fuck off, Nigel you weirdo’ and keep running, quite cheerfully. It wouldn’t make me either do funny moves or leave.

stapletonsguitar · 29/03/2026 17:31

That’s a bit weird and creepy tbh. Where does this video end up? He could be some deviant who likes watching videos of women jiggling around for the camera 😬

EasterDecoration · 29/03/2026 17:33

I'd just ignore it or wave at it. Would not dance.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2026 17:36

I hate this shit. By all means hold up a sign if it makes you happy. Videoing people without asking permission and demanding a performance? Yuk, what a twat.

Davros · 29/03/2026 17:37

I’d stick up two fingers

GoldMoon · 29/03/2026 17:38

Not parkrun, but there is a woman in my small town that records her every trip on the bus or walk about the High St and she posts it on YouTube and a town Facebook page .
I've never seen myself on it , but if saw her I would ask that she does not record me or post it online .
I've seen my garden / garden walk on YouTube though and even see that as a bit of an invasion !

It's young woman who apparently suffers with extreme anxiety and this helps her enormously...
