Would you like to eat this?

I’m making rhubarb fool for dessert next Friday (a birthday lunch). Would a shortbread biscuit on the side be a ridiculous addition or a welcome extra? I don’t have a sweet tooth so I’m not sure if I’m over doing things.

I eat fish AND meat but I would LOVE the opportunity to try out an interesting vegan dish cooked by a vegan!

I’m making roasted vegetable dal (my own variant) with spicy cauliflower rice tomorrow. You are all welcome!

I would look at you scoffing that and think “I want some of that!!”

As a vegan, this is a perfect opportunity to blow them away with a vegan dish

Rokabe · 27/03/2026 18:40

Will you even be able to eat the fool?

DilemmaDelilah · 28/03/2026 12:47

Shortbread would be lovely with rhubarb fool. Langue de chat would be even better! Or even a brandy snap roll.

FlatErica · 28/03/2026 12:49

Love it!

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2026 12:52

Shortbread would be good but a crisp gingersnap type of biscuit would be good.
Or maybe a shortbread-type biscuit with crystallised ginger in it?

FictionalCharacter · 28/03/2026 12:56

Absolutely yes to the fool and the shortbread. A bit of orange zest in the shortbread would be especially nice alongside rhubarb.

That’s a great shout! Lovely combination of flavours.

twentyeightfishinthepond · 28/03/2026 12:58

Good plan op.

Endofyear · 28/03/2026 13:16

A shortbread biscuit with a fruit fool is perfect! Your menu sounds lovely ☺️

Walksspecial · 28/03/2026 13:46

Menu sounds delicious but I wouldn’t feel comfortable the host eating an entirely different dish from everyone else. And you couldn’t even have the fool as a vegan.

DilemmaDelilah · 28/03/2026 15:57

I missed that you're vegan. It's good of you to cook meat and fish for those who aren't.

I have cooked for a vegan in the last year and we have just eaten the same. Vegetable curry, a spicy rice and lentil biriani type of thing, and a mushroom and chestnut bourguignon. I also found that most readymade pastry is vegan - so it's easy to make a roasted vegetable or fruit tart.

That sounds delicious! I would love a dinner party hosted by a vegan as I’d be excited day the prospect of trying a vegan dish cooked by a vegan.

So I’d be looking longingly at what @PenelopeAsks was eating!

Agree with @moggerhanger - they always do a contrast texture on Masterchef and if it’s good enough for Monica…

But then OP would have to do a third component like a chocolate & foraged grub crumb.

LaLoose · 28/03/2026 17:42

Oo I’d do pistachio shortbread both for the flavour combination and the pink-green

bittertwisted · 28/03/2026 17:43

Rhubarb fool with a biscuit is sublime, and the buscuit brings texture. I would love to eat that and I’m a cheese rather than pudding person

Crinkle77 · 28/03/2026 17:47

Definitely welcome!!!

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 28/03/2026 17:50

Love rhubarb fool, definitely with a biscuit although maybe a thinner, crisper one. Or a brandy snap. I would absolutely eat the shortbread though.

Tenniswhites · 28/03/2026 18:12

Sounds absolutely delicious. Dm used to make it & served it with ginger biscuits (homemade) sometimes she’d put a thin layer of crushed ginger biscuits on the bottom.
No one in my house will eat it so I’ve not made it sadly

maras2 · 28/03/2026 20:47

I made rhubarb fool recently and accompanied it with a very mild ginger tuile (BBC recipe).
Good job I made extra.

Chewbecca · 28/03/2026 20:52

Love a rhubarb fool with a shortbread biscuit but I am with other posters whereby I would be embarrassed not to eat anything the same as you. Will the veg / sides be shared? That'll help.

You could make a vegan rhubarb crumble for all to share?

Magnificentbeast · 28/03/2026 20:53

Sounds good to me. Great combination.

Empress13 · 28/03/2026 22:25

Sounds great

FoolOfShips · 28/03/2026 22:28

I don't like rhubarb or shortbread, so not personally, but if it was a raspberry fool and some other kind of biscuit, it would be nice.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/03/2026 22:32

Yes and stem ginger shortbread goes very well.
