What do you and your DH do when you go out?

Our kids are now grown up, and DH and I have free rime. Jolly lovely it is to be able to spend time together!

But we've realised that most weekends we're going out for food or cocktails, and this isn't good for our waistlines or our wallets!

We don't like sport at all, so won't enjoy sports based activities or stuff like dancing or roller skating.

We've done all the stuff like mini golf/axe throwing/bowling at our local complex, and honestly find that stuff a bit 'meh' (and expensive).

Cinema, theatre etc are OK if it's something we're interested in, but not for every weekend.

We have enjoyed stuff like sip and paint or escape rooms, but again, not every weekend.

So what stuff do you do with your DH when going out alone, that isn't just eating or drinking?

We're sad - national trust membership and stately homes

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 27/03/2026 14:50

National trust, stately homes, museums. Love it. But we’re not drinkers, been sober for ten years. :)

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 27/03/2026 14:52

Yeah, we do do stuff like that during the day, but I'm more thinking nights out.

We normally go to one of the local beaches and have a nice long walk. Playing cards is another thing we do. I admit we do a lot of things separately just because we both like our own space.

CharlotteRumpling · 27/03/2026 14:53

Museums, galleries, theatre, dance, music, comedy on rotation.

Ohhhh! Orgies.

satsumas26 · 27/03/2026 14:53

We enjoy going to see bands, museums/exhibitions and things like light shows etc

Hayley1256 · 27/03/2026 14:53

We like going out on a weekend but sometime ls we will stay on and cook a fancy meal, put some music on ect.

GenieGenealogy · 27/03/2026 14:54

Geocaching.

MiddleAgedDread · 27/03/2026 14:55

adult evening class although they tend to be midweek not weekends

Marmite27 · 27/03/2026 14:55

we had time off work together today, so we went to the gym, then did the food shopping. We live such a rock and roll lifestyle!

wracky · 27/03/2026 14:56

comedy gigs, pub quiz

EnterQueene · 27/03/2026 14:56

We are keen hillwalkers - which justifies a meal out afterwards and lots to talk about from the walk. Eating out is much cheaper if you forgo the alcohol.

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 27/03/2026 14:59

Yeah, we're good for daytimes (walks/stately homes/minibreaks/daytrips etc) and we're good for 'at home' activities (board games, crafts, movie nights, cold case files etc).

I just want to find something to do of an evening that doesn't involve eating or drinking as the main feature. Preferably stuff that doesn't need massive advance planning

Plant fairs, looking for a new house at the moment, the odd meal out, walk round a lovely French town, go to a market, go to see a band, go to a friends for aperos or a soiree or some other gathering.

FWIW we spend a lot of time in France too, definitely one of our hobbies!

Playing board games, watching TV together, which is actually something we hardly did for a variety of reasons, cooking together looking for local local theatre shows.

mylittleyumyum · 27/03/2026 15:05

Karaoke and bingo are two nighttime activities I'm looking forward to enjoying with my daughter when she hits 18.

Hubby and I are all about food and we'll drive for miles to check out recommendations.

Blarn · 27/03/2026 15:05

Do you live by any 'fancy' cinemas? The ones with bars and often show obscure or older films? A lovely film and a nice drink to go with it, then home.

Paganpentacle · 27/03/2026 15:07

Live music.
Ghost hunts.

noidea69 · 27/03/2026 15:08

I am imagine when my kids are adult, we will be doing drinks and food all the time.

sittingonabeach · 27/03/2026 15:08

You seem to do a lot already, do you have to do more?

Leo800 · 27/03/2026 15:12

In nice weather we’ll go for an evening walk on the beach & sometimes swim in the sea. Followed by a drink or pizza. Separately we do a book club, playing in a band, paddle boarding.

Do you primarily want to be passively entertained, physically active, or social?
