A very loose and easy recipe for those that prefer a savoury breakfast. Hear me out.

Apologies I’m not reinventing the wheel but… it’s basically a savoury flapjack. I crave savoury in the morning.

I eat breakfast (brunch) around 10ish. I work rurally and outside all day. Very active.

These flappy jack things are easy to make and just need mixing then cooking in the oven or air fryer, storing in Tupperware.

Loose quantities below, anything works really.

bunch spring onions or red/white onion, chopped finely
handful of any flour
handful of porridge oats
one egg
greek yogurt - a few dollops
nuts/seeds mix (from Aldi or Tesco)
and/or chopped cashews - a toddler sized handful perhaps
lots of grated cheddar (or any cheese!)
Tub of cottage cheese (drain the bastard if it’s low fat) or crumbled block of smoky tofu
peanut butter- globs of. (Warm first if too sticky)

oh..salt pepper, paprika, some chilli flakes too.

Prob not low fat or whatever, but my 55yr old body feels sustained during the day eating 3 of these bad boys. I snack on them as and when.

Photos to follow, if anyone wants to try, you are aiming for a claggy mix, not a batter mix.

Love the sound of these, thanks! Could add herbs, chopped spinach maybe too if it still sticks together?

Yes! It’s a very loose recipe! Add anything or omit anything, just opt for a claggy stiff mix with lots of flavoursome ingredients rather than a batter type mix (I’ve learned the hard way lol)

Omg sounds yum!

GoodNamesOnly · 22/03/2026 19:56

These sound good, thanks.

I often eat porridge for lunch, usually with peanut butter, sliced banana and blueberries, but sometimes I make a savoury porridge with a mix of cheese/ tuna/ beans/ fried egg and chilli flakes.
Warm, filling, healthy, delicious and ready from the microwave in 2 minutes 😋.

Awesome

Oh crikey, I didn’t know about savoury porridge! Makes sense though. Everything breakfast wise is geared towards sweet as opposed to savoury (I don’t want toast, I’m fed up of avocados, I don’t want eggs)

I forgot to mention, I make one lot on a Sunday and I have my work meals sorted for the week.
Sometimes I tip chilli jam on them too.

You used to be able to get Marmite flapjacks. Mmmm they were good.

I love the idea of a savoury flapjack. Definitely one to try.

treacledan71 · 22/03/2026 20:20

Sounds good thanks. Husband eats his breakfast at 9ish at work but starts at 6 and has to have something easy to reach. Getting fed up with egg sandwiches on brown. Do odd cold bacon or sausage. Sometimes do fruit breads but he prefers savory. I will have a go. He does take bannanas too. Sausage rolls etc not healthy.

Yes I know.
I know you didn’t mention it but overnight oats make feel bleughhh, it’s always sweet stuff for breakfast.
With us savoury beasts there aren’t many transportable options to make in advance.

Love the idea of this, see also savoury bread and butter pudding (cheese and onion or mustard or pickle sandwichs in the savoury custard) AND savoury bread pudding (mix the bread, milk, eggs with cheese, herbs, garlic, olives, tomatoes, bacon, even tuna

Also savoury rock cakes, instead of sugar, use olives, sundried tomatoes, tons of cheese, whatever flavours you like

I love experimenting and love savoury over sweet

Ohh yes we tried that he is not that keen on yogurt. Cereal a no no as not practical. Sweet flapjacks sometimes. Cereal bars dont fill him up.

Spanish tortilla is great to have in the fridge. Egg, potatoes, onion, spinach, cheese bit of ham if you’re meat-inclined…

Well I got the idea for the rock cakes by deciding that I literally couldnt be arsed to work with a scone dough and roll out and cut out (I know some people just shape them but I couldnt even be bothered with that) and thought why cant I just have cheesy rock cakes

They are lovely. Dont be shy with the cheese, could also put pesto in them, chillies, you name it.

Sounds great but too caloric for me who does not work outside in an active job! Might try it out for my very active son though.

Yes I agree, it is full packed with protein and (good) fats. I’m not a dietitian just a 55yr old with an active outside job … I’m still a hefty 14 with a sticky out belly, but I love wine…hence…
🥰
