A very loose and easy recipe for those that prefer a savoury breakfast. Hear me out.

Apologies I’m not reinventing the wheel but… it’s basically a savoury flapjack. I crave savoury in the morning.

I eat breakfast (brunch) around 10ish. I work rurally and outside all day. Very active.

These flappy jack things are easy to make and just need mixing then cooking in the oven or air fryer, storing in Tupperware.

Loose quantities below, anything works really.

bunch spring onions or red/white onion, chopped finely
handful of any flour
handful of porridge oats
one egg
greek yogurt - a few dollops
nuts/seeds mix (from Aldi or Tesco)
and/or chopped cashews - a toddler sized handful perhaps
lots of grated cheddar (or any cheese!)
Tub of cottage cheese (drain the bastard if it’s low fat) or crumbled block of smoky tofu
peanut butter- globs of. (Warm first if too sticky)

oh..salt pepper, paprika, some chilli flakes too.

Prob not low fat or whatever, but my 55yr old body feels sustained during the day eating 3 of these bad boys. I snack on them as and when.

Photos to follow, if anyone wants to try, you are aiming for a claggy mix, not a batter mix.

That's potage/pottage, surely?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottage

Pottage is mainly pea based although does have grains like pearl barley type grains, sometimes oats but mainly barley

minipie · 23/03/2026 19:56

Ooh I think DD would love these, she’s not a sweet breakfast person either and sometimes needs something to grab n go

How long do you bake them for, what temp and do you turn half way? Thank you!

Sounds up my street!

I dunk sourdough in posh olive oil and have it with a bit of cheese for breakfast .

How long do these keep?

Ineedsleepnotsugar · 23/03/2026 22:02

Ooh these look fab. Do I cook them in the oven? What temp, how long?

Doggodoggo · 23/03/2026 22:22

Sounds great. I wonder if it would be easier just to put all the mixture in something like a brownie pan and then cut into squares while still warm. Might be easier than shaping little patties, especially if the mixture is loose.

Sounds fab but TEN EGGS...

Love savoury porridge with roast squash and a kind of sage based gremolata that I used to be able to get locally. I never managed to make it as well as the coffee shop did.

Yes to savoury rock buns. I made these recently with cheese and paprika.

This thread has also reminded me of grits with pepper, cheese and butter. Learned about them when some Americans stayed with us.

Today I had lentil soup for breakfast - can recommend!

Allthesnowallthetime · 23/03/2026 22:47

Forgot to say, OP, that I love your idea!

I often have lentil soup or tarka dhal for breakfast, people think Im really odd. Its so gentle, warming, comforting and fills you up

This thread is dangerous, I dare not make these savoury cakes or that savoury granola, there would be nothing left of it.

Yeah, it’s basically a frittata isn’t it? With cauliflower instead of potato.

No, because frittatas dont have flour in them, the savoury cake recipes seem to have flour in them

These sound good. I like something sweet on the afternoon but savoury for breakfast.

friskybivalves · 24/03/2026 16:34

I can’t wait to try these @Snooks1971 but can you advise on oven temp and how long you cook the mixture for?

@friskybivalves @Ineedsleepnotsugar @minipie @Givinguponmyhair about 180 and for 15-20 mins, I do flip them over half way through. You are aiming for lightly browned and crispy, and they firm up slightly after cooling. I store them in Tupperware in the fridge and just take 3-4 to work every day in a separate tub.

I make enough for 4 days at work and they last all week in the fridge.

Driving home from work today I was musing on adding/subbing some grated carrot and some grated apple (I like a bit of apple with my savoury!)

Snooks1971 · 24/03/2026 18:24

@Doggodoggo depends on how loose/stiff your mixture is I guess. I made mine too sloppy a few weeks ago and my patties slumped into one big tray bake thing that I had to slice up :) still tasted good though!

Now I try and keep the mixture v stiff and just dollop onto the baking sheet in mounds with 2 spoons - I think that’s easier in the long run than slicing up, but there are no rules.

These sound great. I might struggle not to slather with butter and eat with more cheese while still warm, thus sky rocketing the calorie count Grin

Snooks1971 · 24/03/2026 18:29

PS I love how there are other folk out there who also like a savoury breakfast that is easy to grab and transportable. I needed something like a breakfast bar/granola bar but everything out there is sweet!!! These are not too carb heavy (makes me sleepy and crave more sugar) so I tried to make something with lower sugar and more protein with these bad boys.

@LemonPoundCake We’ve had them for tea, still warm with buttered new potatoes and salad Smile also would be lovely with spicy paprika baked beans! Woo!

Sounds nice but does anyone else find that oats make them fart like a horse? /:)

No, but last time I had granola I went for five shits the following day. I couldn’t understand where it was all coming from. The sheer volume!
Who’s got time for five shits? Not me.

SingtotheCat · 24/03/2026 19:57

No disrespect to your recipe, OP.
