I left some Chinese food on the counter top last night as forgot to put it in the fridge. It’s prawn dish. It’s chilly here overnight and I put it in the fridge first thing this morning. Would you eat it tonight?

No

You must not eat ANY chilled food that has been at room temperature for more than 60 mins! Look it up, it’s called the food danger zone. I also think you need to look up Heat Resistant Bacteria! 🦠

Blimey! I should have been dead years ago.

horsesaanddogs · 22/03/2026 16:35

Yeah I would

Yep I would eat - kitchen is cold and as long as throughly heated. I've survived lol, hope you do to OP.

AnnaQuayRules · 22/03/2026 16:37

No and I don't usually take much notice of use by dates etc.

However my dad did this sort of thing quite regularly and was never ill, so maybe I'm being overly cautious

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 22/03/2026 16:38

My kitchen was bloody freezing last night , so yes I would.

The rule is 4 hours.

For prawns no longer than 2 hours, if room temp is above 32deg then no longer than an hour

RS1987 · 22/03/2026 16:42

Prawns I would. Not rice though.

Me too and yet here I am at 49 having never ever suffered from food poisoning.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/03/2026 16:53

No!

Celiathebanshee · 22/03/2026 16:53

Yes definitely

Blueseudeshoes · 22/03/2026 17:04

I have done this multiple times haha, if it was the summer and boiling hot id probably give it a miss tbh

WhatAPavalova · 22/03/2026 17:06

No, I’d not enjoy it or the hours after, I’d be waiting for my gastrointestinal system to complain, even if it never happened.

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 22/03/2026 17:06

DS does this all the time. I keep telling him they need to be in the fridge. He's never been ill from them though.

2Rebecca · 22/03/2026 17:07

Probably but Im in Scotland and the heating is off at night. We’re good at putting stuff in the fridge though so unlikely to happen and prawn stuff gets prioritised for eating

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/03/2026 17:39

I hate prawns so it’s an easy no from me.

CookingFatCat · 22/03/2026 17:44

I would eat it!🫣

KnottyKnitting · 22/03/2026 17:44

Oh good lord no! Especially if it has prawns in it!

Owly11 · 22/03/2026 17:45

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/03/2026 16:25

Golly, surprised it’s so adamant. I’m eating them right now. Will let you how I get on, lol..

Why did you bother asking Mumsnet then?!

Uglydumpling · 22/03/2026 17:45

Yes definitely

I've done this several times a week for about 35 years.

What should have happened?

And yes I would have eaten the OPs Chinese prawns.

Thecows · 22/03/2026 18:22

Yeah why ask if you're eating them. Hard no from me 🤢

Oh don't be silly, at home how does one get things cold enough for the fridge from piping hot within 60 minutes?

Badgerstmary · 22/03/2026 18:25

I have.

Gingernaut · 22/03/2026 18:26
