Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.
https://www.denbypottery.com/pages/save-denby?_gl=113xe0u1upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhobLsPGykwMVbpBQBh2sNhibEAAYASABEgJiavD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAAD88OOOIrq_FVCUS-mNNXnw6tUk
had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

I've inherited a full set (including salt and pepper shakers, lidded tureens, serving platters plus the plates, bowls, teapots etc) in Regency Green from the early 1980s. I am going to sell it. It isn't my style and I find the plates too heavy - and I hate the sound of cutlery on it. Plus it hurts me to see it as it was my Mums Sunday best. (I have other things to remind me of her and I will never use the Denby.)

Myblueclematis · 22/03/2026 10:45

I bought a dinner service in Debenhams in 1998 when I moved. It is china rather than the Denby stoneware I had previously but since then I have broken one dinner plate, lost a tea plate and one cup and saucer broke. I still have five dinner plates and tea plates, six middle size plates, salt and pepper, vegetable dish, gravy boat and six pudding/soup bowls.

I did think I'd downsize it to a cheaper four settings set from Dunelm or similar shop as I don't need the amount I do have but reading this about Denby, I will keep the one I've got, it will see me out that's for sure.

Your title is annoying. Have I bought some? No, because I don’t have the spare cash to splurge on something I don’t need and also it’s not my responsibility to save every British brand that collapses.

Sorry, probably missing the point but I’m cranky!

Actually I agree, plus a short-lived spike in sales isn't going to save them is it?

I've looked at Denby many times and they've had some nice-ish stuff but I don't think they've kept up with trends.

Just added to our pasta bowls - thanks OP. DC getting bigger so now can have their own!
Rest of our Denby still going strong 25 years later. I love the permanence of using the same dishes etc over the years.

Portmeirion has done a good job of keeping up with changing styles

Dont worry its not an instruction

No one is going to have you up against a wall if you dont buy a new saucer

I know it's not an instruction, but it seems a strange thing to even suggest.

I don't think they try to stay up to date with trends. They are long term classics not faddy trends.

A spike in sales might help. It depends how long the energy cost spike goes on. If it continues there will be plenty more energy intensive business closing their doors in the short term.

UK consumers generally just prefer cheap throwaway tat from China sadly.

I live quite close to the Denby village and will be sad to see it go. Not because of the Denby (which I think is old fashioned and heavy) but because of the gift shops, butchers and deli and some of the events they do (I have seen James Martin there twice at one of his cooking shows).

TheRealLillyAllenVerifiedAccount · 22/03/2026 11:08

It's all a bit ubiquitous. If I was going to buy something in that price bracket I'd want sonething a bit more special than a generic white dinner plate.

Doteycat · 22/03/2026 11:14

Nope.
Why would i?

James Martin has a range with them doesnt he?

StarryStaryNight · 22/03/2026 11:17

I have Harliquin Denby and lot of it, and it isn't used much other than when family is here to eat.
I love the baking dishes and use those.

I'm looking for a new lightweight set.

Yes it is quite heavy and gets hot if you microwave something in it.

I love pottery though.

MaidOfSteel · 22/03/2026 11:20

We’ve got quite a lot of Denny pieces and they’ll last forever. Next time we’re near the Denby shop (if it’s still there!) we’ll buy a few more pieces. I love the classic look and so I’m gutted to know they’re in trouble.

My husband has worked there for 33 years and is 6 years away from retiring!! We hoped he would finish at Denby but thats not looking likely .
Please share and sign the petition when its ready. 600 people about to loose their jobs and many of them are close to retiring when it will be difficult to find something else.

How will the petition help when they're owned by private equity? What are they hoping will come from it?

You can get lovely dinner sets in most supermarkets now, so who is going to shell out for Denby?!

Maybe the people who don't rate supermarket dinner sets?

Very sad that Denby is in danger, I recall buying 8 of every plate, soup bowls, cups and saucers and some serving dishes, it was all packed up by Kendal Milne in Manchester and we took it was hand luggage on an RAF flight back to where we were then working. I was asked if we hand hand luggage and I winced 'just these two parcels' as the strong string has threatening to cut off my fingers. Over 50 years ago, I recently had a plate break and I was furious!

Did you manage to replace it? If not try firstireland.com as they have loads and might just stock yours. I still use my wedding china 35 years on and have bought some replacements from them.

WanderingGiraffe · 22/03/2026 11:47

Thanks for this OP, I didn’t know they were in trouble. I need a couple of pieces to complete my set so will buy them now.

Also thanks to the people who mentioned eBay, some lovely vintage designs there and no surprise to see they are still in all in great shape as built to last! I think I’ll end up getting some bits off eBay too…

Houses are smaller. It’s hard to have the room for a posh set in addition to an everyday set.
Interesting that a lot of posters are saying they got it years ago. the difference now is couples are having to spend so much more on rent and mortgage, proportionate to their income that they just get a cheap set from a supermarket or IKEA.
It will be sad to see it go and job losses are horrible but I can see why they are struggling.

I think part of it is not keeping stuff 'for good' and few people entering at home.
People either eat out or is casual bbqs and takeaways at home.

Denby is to expensive to have as everyday wear in my mind

Eudaimonia11 · 22/03/2026 11:48

Saw this and thought “yeah, I’ll have a look and maybe buy some pasta bowls or something”, browsed the website and no, absolutely not!

I had a look at the dinner sets just out of interest. £184.60 ON SALE!!! It was £264 full price! For a dinner set! And it wasn’t even as nice as the ones you can get in Asda and other shops, none of them were!

So I guess that’s why they’re going out of business.

All of the posts on here about how indestructible their products are, what on earth are you doing with them?! How heavy handed are MN being with their plates that they need to spend over £180 on a dinner set? My cheapo set from Asda has been great for well over a decade and I think it only cost £15-£20.

If you’ve got more money than sense and want to spend lots on plates and bowls, wouldn’t you just go to a super fancy shop that sells super duper nice ones?

Yes.

Yes but its no longer made in England

I don’t think everyday pottery needs to keep up with trends.
I have Imperial blue but I mix and match with blue haze and halo. ( halo and haze are very stylish).
I thought all ceramic pottery gets hot in the microwave?
Can someone post what they think of as trendy pottery that you use everyday?
I like to support British jobs.

I love some of the Denby sets but way out of my budget unfortunately. It’s always been a ‘one day when I’m better off’ type of aspiration.

I’m leaning towards imperial blue as I think if Denby close then this will be easiest to collect. Then maybe pasta bowls in another design.
