Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

Is the quality still the same? I invested in a set of mugs during covid when I had a bit of extra cash thanks to not commuting, and within a year one of them was cracked and two others were chipped. Was not impressed.

A dinner set costing over £200 isn't everyday for most people. Not when breaking a plate costs more than a takeaway pizza.

But a replacement dinner plate woukd be a much better investment than a takeaway pizza!

Denby plates are very hard to break we never had a plate break - only a few jugs.. I think it is a difference in mentality. I would think little of spending £20 on a plate that is going to get 4,000 uses, but buying a take away pizza always leaves me feeling massively ripped off. People have different priorities.

I love Denby and have quite a bit, however they are classic and extremely durable, and I’m not going to start buying stuff I don’t need. Overconsumption has caused many of the massive problems we have today.

Just amazes me that we have fashion in our cups and saucers.
I have quite a lot of denby - have had it for years as so hard-wearing.
I would go out and buy to support the company but I havent the space in my house.

Every second car I see on the roads is some massive thing which is fairly newish. I think the COL crisis is overegged.

There are some people on their uppers as usual. But I think in reality people spend money on different things these days. The same amount but not on one quality thing, they spend it on lots of poor quality little things. Im guilty of this as much as the next person

Lease cars can be quite cost effective in the short term. Like the ever growing number things that people are getting on subscription, cars are one of them.

If we were desperate for a car, we would need a loan and our maximum of about £300 per month. We could get a very much better new car on lease than taking a risk that a second hand car would then need additional work.

In the past we've always bought a used car that's a few years old but our last one wouldn't start due to a mystery electrical fault with still another year of the loan, leaving us in a difficult position.

ChristmasCwtch · 22/03/2026 10:01

No, I haven’t bought it in the past and I just looked at the website. I don’t like it enough to buy any.

Huge shame that so much history will come to an end though.

I think that is the flaw in the business model. All our plates, bowls, pasta bowls mugs etc etc are from Denby but because they last pretty much for ever I don't to buy any more. There is only so much crockery you need to own!

user1471502540 · 22/03/2026 10:06

My husband has worked there for 33 years and is 6 years away from retiring!! We hoped he would finish at Denby but thats not looking likely .
Please share and sign the petition when its ready. 600 people about to loose their jobs and many of them are close to retiring when it will be difficult to find something else.

smallglassbottle · 22/03/2026 10:06

I've always liked it, but can never afford it. If I was to buy crockery, I'd buy second hand from ebay I'm afraid.

TheFuturesSoBright · 22/03/2026 10:06

Oh this has made me really sad. I loved the Denby Baroque design and I always thought I'd buy some one day. Now I see it was discontinued in 2000 !
That's got to be the longest anyone's procrastinated over buying something, surely.

BananaSkinShoes · 22/03/2026 10:07

Do people not change up their crockery in line with trends? Eg, we bought those wide rimmed pasta bowl/plates and lipped dinner and side plates - I’d be terribly bored of the same plates for years on end.

It's 'change', not 'change up'. The modern trend of adding 'up' unnecessarily drives me mad.

And no, I don't change my bloody crockery to follow trends. How wasteful.

No - I buy things to last. I cook interesting enough food not be at all bored at dinner by the plate.....

No, because we live on a planet with finite resources and repeatedly replacing items than can last multiple lifetimes in the name of fashion is wasteful.

Not to mention some of us have a clear sense of our own taste and so buy once and love forever.

Denby is so classic, no need to worry about "trends" I love the denby I have, its such quality.

People keep saying “you could go through ten supermarket sets for the price of Denby”. Maybe that’s true, but the environmental cost of that is appalling. Obviously if you can’t afford Denby then you have no choice, but if you can then I think choosing the supermarket options is as bad as buying fast fashion from Shein or Temu (both environmentally and in terms of how the workers will be treated).

The “people don’t have space for it” is a weird argument as well. No, people these days don’t have room for fancy occasion china. But there’s no reason Denby can’t be used as everyday crockery. It’s what we do, and what the others we know with Denby do.

Edited

a lot of people can’t afford Denny. If they got it then it would be a complete luxury. I don’t see how that is hard to understand.

Oblivionnnnn · 22/03/2026 10:24

LifeBeginsToday · 22/03/2026 07:44

The problem now is people don't value quality. Why have one good dinner set that will last a lifetime when you can have new every year from Asda? Now dinner plates go in and out of fashion so people always want new. We live in such a wasteful society that doesn't value anything more than "what can we buy next".

I think the trouble actually for a lot of people is they can’t afford to pay £24 for one bowl, and can instead get a whole set for that cost.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 22/03/2026 10:25

We have a studio set of mugs, cereal bowls, pasta bowls, side plates, small snack plates and dinner plates.
They are all perfect sizes for each use.
Have only broken one and rest as good as new.

Err no. Buy something good and solid and vary what you put on it.
In the seventies people rushed out out and changed their bathrooms to avocado or plum coloured suites then it went out of fashion. People ripped up their good carpets and replaced them, people listen to what the IKEA advert says and replace sofas annually. People buy clothes and wear once.
All goes to landfill

RichardMarxisinnocent · 22/03/2026 10:27

Why on earth would I buy new crockery when I already have enough, just because the company is in trouble? If it was something consumable that I already bought regularly I'd continue to buy it, but I'm not going to buy a load of plates that I don't need.

slet · 22/03/2026 10:29

We had it on our wedding list which was nearly 19 years ago. It hasn’t dated, hasn’t chipped and gets used everyday. Maybe they are a victim of their own success making products that are so durable and timeless they don’t need replacing, unlike cheaper sets. I will have a look at adding to it though!

NoTouch · 22/03/2026 10:31

When I first left home in the 1990s we went through a few dinner sets that quickly got cracked or chipped before treating myself to some denby. That set has lasted with daily family use for over 25 years. There are a couple of pieces missing (butter fingere dh) but otherwise looks like new, Sadly the design is now discontinued, so treated myself to their imperial blue design which is the good set for visitors/occasions as it is one of their ongoing designs.

When I saw the news last week I cashed in my Tesco vouchers and bought the last pieces I needed to complete a set I have slowly built up for my son for when he leaves home. I was a bit nervous ordering in case the administrators were called in but they arrived on Friday

I hope they do stay open so I can get replacement pieces in the event of accidents.

Dont worry its not an instruction

No one is going to have you up against a wall if you dont buy a new saucer

I’ve been to the Debby factory shop and it’s fantastic, the whole site is. I love their products and it’s really sad 😞
