Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

No, why would I?

Glitterbiscuits · 22/03/2026 09:35

You can use Tesco Clubcard points to buy Denby!

Happyjoe · 22/03/2026 09:36

Really well made items but too bland for me. I gave up on crockery sets too as one or two broken items down the line becomes a pain for a set, so years ago I started just buying random colourful, pretty items, nothing matching so if it gets broken, no issue at all.

Love our Denby. It’s our only crockery so we use it all the time and it’s lasted so well. I have some bits in the same design passed on from an elderly relative who went into a home which must be decades old.

I don’t consider Denby a fancy dinner set, it’s hardy stoneware perfect for every day use. I have 30 year old Denby that’s in use daily, has survived house moves, kids, a tiled kitchen floor and is still beautiful.

I’d pay again for good quality crockery that is durable. I don’t want to change my dinner service every few years, the environmental impact alone makes that impractical.

That's the great thing about it. It is made to last. We use our everyday. We only ever had a few bits break - it is very hard waring.

Sadly in a throw away world the number of people producing things that last is rapidly declining.

The supermarkets have a better model of selling crap cheaper but knowing that people will need to buy a new set in 5 years as it will ware out.

TBH I'm not surprised.
Its so expensive compared to imported stuff. For years it was a staple on wedding lists, in all the big department shops, but few people are doing those sorts of lists.

And even fewer will have "good" crockery as well as every day stuff.
We have denby that gets pulled out at Christmas and everyday stuff.

If i was starting again I don't think id bother. People aren't entertaining at home the way they used to. When we have friends round its either BBQ or takeaway.
The denby isn't getting hauled out for either.

Denby is everyday stuff, because it is so durable. And it will go in the dishwasher.
I had Wedgwood for my "good" china, and admit that I rarely use it these days.
It would never occur to me to buy crockery in a supermarket (except maybe for a student child), because I expect it to be long-lasting.

Happyjoe · 22/03/2026 09:38

To add, I am sorry that they're in trouble though.

PaschaPenny · 22/03/2026 09:39

I have got Denby, bought piecemeal, some more than 20 years ago. When the kids were little I would do an audit once a year and replace what had been dropped/broken. I haven't had to do that for years.

It is everyday stuff here, Imperial Blue, it is all we have got.

I'll be sorry to see them fold.

MirrorMirror1247 · 22/03/2026 09:39

My grandparents got married in 1948 and received Denby crockery for their silver wedding in 1973. That crockery is still in use, by me! There are some bits that are wrapped up and stored, like casserole dishes, but the plates and bowls are in my cupboard for everyday use. I've got a teapot and milk jug in there, but I don't drink tea or coffee so it doesn't get used. There have been a few accidental losses but otherwise it's still going strong.

That’s what I plan to do. Should be able to get a 12 price set

Dragonflytamer · 22/03/2026 09:39

The Denby customer service was second to none. I had a relative whose had a set and after 8 years the glaze seemed to fail. Denby replaced the whole lot. A supermarket would have sent you a certificate of achievement for getting it last 8 years.

ContentedAlpaca · 22/03/2026 09:40

I was given some denby coffee cups about 15 years ago. They are used daily and I would like to support a British business, especially if manufacture is in the UK.. Unfortunately I don't have spare cash for buying pottery when I'm not in need of any. If they are still around when we need to buy more then I'll definitely try to buy from them.

A dinner set costing over £200 isn't everyday for most people. Not when breaking a plate costs more than a takeaway pizza.

This is what we have done. Ours came from whittards initially when they made lots of lovely mix and match designs. Now we buy colourful stuff when things break and we need to fill the gaps. It's still all a mishmash which I like

OrdinaryMagicOfAcorns · 22/03/2026 09:44

Who’s got the money and space for posh dinner sets any more among generation rent?

The British economy collapsed in the 80s, and all Blair did was paper over some cracks, encouraging the older generations to create a new economy ripping off youngsters (well we were young back then). Recreating the need for inheritance.

The paper is now old and torn and there’s no more to paper the cracks again. Reality is biting. Goddess help all of us younger generations with no Dickensian-like family connections.

YouHaveAnArse · 22/03/2026 09:45

Oh, I used to love Whittards crockery. Used to lust after it as a student, thinking that I'd get some once I got one of these graduate jobs they kept promising we'd end up with. By the time I was in the matching set of crockery phase of my life they were gone.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 22/03/2026 09:45

Just been in there and bought a few items. Much of it half price in their sale with a 15% first order discount has made it very affordable.

likelysuspect · 22/03/2026 09:46

Every second car I see on the roads is some massive thing which is fairly newish. I think the COL crisis is overegged.

There are some people on their uppers as usual. But I think in reality people spend money on different things these days. The same amount but not on one quality thing, they spend it on lots of poor quality little things. Im guilty of this as much as the next person

Galsboysgirls · 22/03/2026 09:47

We have Denby. A few bits missing in our set so will have a look how much it is to top up.

We are business owners too. Also struggling right now as the economy is in the pits.

JudgeJ · 22/03/2026 09:48

You can get lovely dinner sets in most supermarkets now, so who is going to shell out for Denby?!

Maybe the people who don't rate supermarket dinner sets?

Very sad that Denby is in danger, I recall buying 8 of every plate, soup bowls, cups and saucers and some serving dishes, it was all packed up by Kendal Milne in Manchester and we took it was hand luggage on an RAF flight back to where we were then working. I was asked if we hand hand luggage and I winced 'just these two parcels' as the strong string has threatening to cut off my fingers. Over 50 years ago, I recently had a plate break and I was furious!

Bully for you. It’s the older generation and those who benefitted from their parents becoming landlords who own those cars. I see plenty of small old runabouts among families. The CoL is underegged among the lower echelons of society who had parents who worked for their living. We can’t even afford one of those rows of mining houses any more. But we never really mattered - Blair’s ‘we’re all middle class now’ - and can’t we shut up and get back in the 6foot box yet?

Edited

Because it’s made in England with English jobs, not in China etc. that’s why it’s more expensive.

And we have one of those. Purchased 3 years ago when times weren’t as hard. An upsize because we have young kids and car seats these days are HUGE! Had to get a PCP because we couldn’t afford to buy outright and we didn’t want to buy second hand as wanted a warranty for certainty of how much it would cost as only have one car!

Toseland · 22/03/2026 09:51

I love Denby and have the old Energy set and recently bought the Arc range. I also have pieces of my Mother's and Grandmother's Denby. So sad to hear they are in trouble.

JackJarvisEsq · 22/03/2026 09:53

I loved denby until I ordered a full pots and pans set. It took about 20 weeks to deliver, and each and every one has lost its handle

they couldn’t be harder to deal with and really didn’t give two hoots about, first, the shocking delay, and then about the pans being so poor

i feel because I used my Tesco points to purchase them I was bottom of the pile to them
