Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

But … it’s ugly?

I don't think it is. Your subjective opinion is subjective.

I think this is sad. Our primary crockery is a Denby Chatsworth dinner set we got almost complete off Ebay. We always wanted to get some Ode as well. They've put out some awesome stuff. It's not pretty-pretty but I find it charming.

I'm not surprised, it's pretty old-fashioned looking and expensive for what it is. You can get lovely dinner sets in most supermarkets now, so who is going to shell out for Denby?!

Edited

Sigh yes, let's just buy everything from supermarkets, they treat their suppliers so well!

LillethGoesWild · 24/03/2026 16:46

Did an audit of the crockery cupboard and have ordered some additional pasta, rice bowls and mugs. Support UK manufacturing.

Unfortunately their customer service really lets them down and after my experience I would be very reluctant to buy their products directly from them again. They were very slow dispatching the items, one bowl arrived cracked, one of the prints was different to all the other bowls and I was told this was normal! When I emailed them, the response I received, didn’t address my issues and gave the impression they hadn’t read it. Therefore I had to email multiple times and it took almost one month to resolve and I still have the one odd bowl. I bought a large number of their products last year as I wanted to collect a set, as I have quite a large extended family, Wayfair and Amazon were great, but my dealing with them directly left me with a very negative impression of the company.☹️. Message to Denby management, If you are charging premium prices then your quality and customer service needs to reflect that and you need to move with the times or customers won’t return.

People that want better quality, and not made in China.

And people who want to support a struggling British business.
I just ordered some with Tesco clubcard vouchers, only paid P&P.

I didn't know that was possible; will do the same.

So we have a denby set. I bought it with my wages from my first job. I have fire chilli, and love the terracotta. However it got discontinued- otherwise I would add some more to our collection!!! Would love a jug. I even bought a terracotta melamine set of something similar for kids to eat off!!!

EBay has lots of pieces in fire chilli although I can’t see a full size jug only a creamer one.

Hephzibah64 · 24/03/2026 20:47

I have a collection of denby baroque. I only use the mugs though. The rest is is decorative only😀

I already have some of their plates, I love them, they're so hard-wearing. I'm in Derby, so literally next door to Denby, and all the independent coffee shops around here use their cups etc. I like the dark styles, not the older-fashioned ones. I'll be paying a visit to their visitor centre soon, but I've seen on local groups that the car parks are overflowing (which is great but I need to be strategic then). We were just saying the other week how Denby are well-promoted and well-used in Derby, but I thought Royal Crown Derby had gone bust - turns out they hadn't, they just don't seem great at promotion.
I also have five blue Denby bunnies that we inherited from a great-great-aunt, original ones from the early 20th century.

HoppingPavlova · 26/03/2026 11:16

Nope. When I was younger and coveted the quality and designs I couldn’t afford it. When I could afford it, the designs were so so and quality had gone massively downhill so it chipped really easily. Now, the designs are shit, and quality is shit, so why would I buy it? If it was the same quality/unique designs per my youth then I’d absolutely be buying and can afford to do so, but nope.

ETA - if you buy it, I think you need to do so from second hand shops, so it’s the traditional product, not the product they are selling new now.

FTMaz · 28/03/2026 08:24

I don’t think Denny is old fashioned at all. It’s an instantly recognisable premium brand. I have a modern kitchen and all my crockery is Denby. It’s expensive but very much a you get what you pay for brand.

Love denby and bought a load more over the weekend to support them. Always loved their stuff. Had it forever and it’s great quality and very modern. Hope they survive. Not listening to this BS about how people have bought lovely dinner sets from Tesco that have lasted two minutes. Invest in quality and get longevity. Invest in crap and you will pay a number of times over and over, more expensive in the long run.

Ooh what did you buy ?
I am swithering because I want to be 100% happy with the finish and colour.
I really like the Kiln range but also am drawn to Halo speckle .
I need to see it in real life though .
I went to a small nearby town where they sell Denby in an independent shop .
They didn’t have Halo Speckle in stock there so I now need to look elsewhere before committing.

suburburban · 28/03/2026 10:45

Anyone ordered via Tesco. I did last weekend and have had no further information, order hasn’t been dispatched which is a nuisance as normally have been very good

I managed to get an absolute bargain ages ago and bought eight of the dinner plates, medium plates, side plates, and bowls for the halo range. They were buy one get one free and half price as seconds. I spent ages in the factory shop going through the piles and piles of them but managed to get some gorgeous patterns and I’m really pleased with them, they have lasted ages.

We did break a couple or rather my little one did, so wanted to replace those plus have bought a load of mugs also, the new ridged ones and bought some of the halo serving bowls. Plus some cutlery and tempted to go back and get some of the coupe plates also.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2026 10:52

I’ve just seen this thread, I’d better check if we need any replacements/extras.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 28/03/2026 11:17

Are they victims of their own success? It's so well made rarely needs replacing.

I think its more too expensive for everyday use and fewer people keeping 'good' dinner sets.

I think the comparison to Le Crucet is a good one. What are they doing differently to Denby?
Is it Denbys colours are too muted?

Marmalademorning · 28/03/2026 11:34

They have until 8th April to find a solution until a full administration is triggered 😢

I ordered early last Saturday via Tesco and received an email yesterday to say it’s been dispatched.

EasterlyDirection · 28/03/2026 12:52

I've been to one of the outlets this week and bought a few bits (my original set is discontinued but there are others that work with it). The staff were really helpful but worried. Will be a shame if it goes.

Dispatch and delivery is taking a bit longer due to a large volume of orders. I ordered last weekend and had both deliveries parcels delivered today via DPD. I only had an alert for delivery for one parcel though.

The speckle is stunning and makes a good breakfast and daytime set with halo as your dinner set. I would go for it and buy if you want some so you don’t miss out.
