Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

Just looked at Ikea plates etc and the style and colours look very similar! Other than made in China.

I thought the same when I was lusting after the pastel Denby pasta bowls my daughter has!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 23/03/2026 20:45

Didn't realise it was still going to be honest. I think their products are suited to a smaller specialized much older market Good quality products but a bit too chunky, old fashioned and expensive for a younger market

Hope they can stay afloat. But if not A lot of people will always have warm and happy memories of Denbigh Pottery

Snowwhitesnow · 23/03/2026 20:54

They are also oven proof. I often make individual lasagna/cottage pie etc . They can go in freezer too.

I do love Denby and was sad to hear the news, although only have one or two items now. I visited their factory once and found it so interesting seeing how things are made, there was a discount shop there too. I really hope they can be saved as they’re a British institution

Gagaandgag · 23/03/2026 21:39

We don’t live far from the Denby factory. I wouldn’t buy it, too expensive and not chic enough. I looked into us doing some pottery courses but they are so expensive so went elsewhere!

But … it’s ugly?

Love denby and bought a load more over the weekend to support them. Always loved their stuff. Had it forever and it’s great quality and very modern. Hope they survive. Not listening to this BS about how people have bought lovely dinner sets from Tesco that have lasted two minutes. Invest in quality and get longevity. Invest in crap and you will pay a number of times over and over, more expensive in the long run.

What all of it? They have done a lot of different designs over the years. What do you like?

NotMeNoNo · 23/03/2026 22:10

Ugly is subjective though isn't it? I love my Denby, I like simple handcrafted classic things and "horrible thick glasses" as a PP said. Other people are welcome to their dainty heirloom porcelain Edinburgh crystal and trendy plates. There are many great ceramics brands in the UK of all kinds of styles.

But it would be still be a shame if a quality brand like Denby went under. They are about everything that is decent and long lasting and sustainable and made in the UK. That's pretty rare these days.

But … it’s ugly?

This is almost Japanese aesthetic and the Japanese have the most refined taste in the world.

TaupeFox · 24/03/2026 00:52

I have quite a few Denby plates and mugs that I inherited from my mum ( likely 1990s). You are so right, they are indestructible, but are expensive, but they are worth it. I have bought a few bits of EBay too. We use Denby most days in our house.

I hope they do survive. Too many British manufacturers go under these days or end up having their products produced in China or the Far East. I know they aren’t British and that they are French but most of Le Crueset’s earthenware is now produced in the Far East. I think it’s only the pans that are still produced in France.

ConcernedBookworm · 24/03/2026 01:39

Supermarket and IKEA crockery is no match for Denby!

I went through so many sets over the years and had a cupboard full of mismatched pieces. They’d get chips and break lots - so it was a false economy buying cheap dinner sets..

It wasn’t till we got Debby 10 years ago for our wedding that I appreciated how much easier it is to load/ unload dishwasher, it looks better and my drawer is now ordered. I’ve broken a couple of pieces (unforgiving tiled floor!) but replaced them. I’m pleased we have Denby because it just makes serving /cleaning more streamlined and I reckon the set could outlast me!

It’s the same with sunglasses. Since buying a Prada pair I never break my sunglasses as they’re such good quality. Whereas an emergency pair of Tesco sunglasses (because I’d forgotten mine) and they bloody broke the same day!!

Buy cheap, buy twice as they say!

We need quality, sustainable brands like Denby for those of us that value quality.

gillybombilly · 24/03/2026 01:56

I love Denby.

I have a Denby White dinner service and also a Cosmic service.

Unfortunately the Cosmic is now discontinued and I would love to replace some mugs and bowls as the pattern has faded through dishwasher use.

I really hope they manage to get through this uncertain time.

This Halo set is everywhere in the factory shop at Denby so it must be very popular. It reminds me of eyeballs inside the bowls.

FruAashild · 24/03/2026 09:18

It's not expensive when you realise your children will be able to sell it if they want in 40 years time. Look at the prices for old ranges like Arabesque or Chevron on ChinaSearch.

Nope - it's clunky and drab :)
Not my thing at all. Sad to hear they're struggling, but definitely won't be purchasing anything.

Yup - sadly all of it. Not my thing at all. (And no, I don't do IKEA either). I think I just grew up on either Royal Copenhagen which I love (for nostalgia reasons and now the mega musel print), OR on clunky earthenware which this reminds me of. Not my thing.

Of course "ugly" is subjective - but I just don't "see" the beauty in this at all.

The alternative is not dainty heirloom porcelain or trendy plates. There is SO much in between, surely!!

Of course it's a shame when a big historical and well-known brand folds, but that's not a reason to buy if I don't like it. HOW though is it about "everything that is decent"? Is that not a bit of a stretch?

Long lasting, sustainable and made in the UK - fair dos. But "everything that is decent"?

PickAChew · 24/03/2026 12:37

Their arc range is very much in between.

EasterlyDirection · 24/03/2026 13:04

Although I'm a fan, and have had mine for years, looking at the website now there are an awful lot of ranges I don't like at all. I strongly dislike the trend for plates with steep sides rather flat rims, don't like textured finishes, don't like the Heritage designs. I like some of the speckly finishes and the traditional greens and blues.

Prada glasses are made by EssilorLuxottica, who make dozens of different brands under license. They're not inherently better quality because they're Prada

PinkHairbrushClub · 24/03/2026 13:20

No I won't buying it. I don't dislike it but like a PP, just because they are struggling is not a reason to be wasteful when I already have full sets of day to day plates and a set of posh crockery from when I married which we use for occasions. Realistically they are a luxury brand trying to survive in a cost of living crisis. It was always going to be difficult.

Ubertomusic · 24/03/2026 14:14

Tryingtokeepgoing · 24/03/2026 13:43

The problem there is the word almost... Yes, it's a good pastiche of the Japanese aesthetic, but the real thing, made in Japan is actually cheaper and, to my eyes, nicer

https://www.mij.co.uk/collections/rice-bowls?srsltid=AfmBOorVVmCd3HOml8fWzcjSyxOE_VSSHaKWS1VYFcGRF4OFCANz-DL0

That's true, but I was just commenting on the "ugliness" remark. Denby is not ugly, it's wabi :)

It's said to see British heritage industries going and the more so the Brits being so denigrating about it and in favour of Ikea, of all things.

For all those pointing out that they hope they’ll get through this difficult time perhaps they could use some of the tax they have dodged or the family who made millions could inject some money. This is a business not a national treasure that needs charity.
