Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

Just discovered my beloved mug are Metz style. I used to have the teapot too. I suspect it was a wedding present or similar. I think I asked for bits for a set and got a few mugs and the teapot!

@Piggywaspushed we have a full set of Metz mugs and never use them! I keep them in a glass fronted cabinet with the crystal wine glasses etc because they are beautiful but tend to prefer bone china for actual tea drinking. We also have so many mugs bought as souvenirs / gifts that we just use those for every day. We got rid of the matching teapot because it took up so much space and dribbled badly, I use a stainless steel insulated one now.

We started a collection of Metz as our wedding gift list in the late 90s, and have added to it over the years, a few plates have chips (dyspraxic family) and we have lost a couple of bowls to being dropped (concrete kitchen floor) but most of it is still perfect. We had cheap Ikea stuff before getting married and started out keeping the Denby for best but quickly switched to it for every day. I was a bit gutted that Metz was discontinued not that long after we started collecting it, but I have picked things up from charity shops and ChinaSearch.

After I graduated my year group and I used to go on annual reunion weekends away (complete piss-ups). We knew the writing was on the wall for our carefree single ways when we stayed somewhere and someone came scuttling into the pub saying excitedly "there's a Denby factory shop up the road" and everyone went "oooh" and trotted off up there.

Skimama123 · 23/03/2026 10:23

we live not far from Denby and I love going to the factory shop. I haven’t bought anything since the announcement because I bought a some before Christmas, we have a set for every day and our wedding set for special occasions is one of the discontinued monsoon ranges, when they stopped making it my mum bought us everything from the range that we didn’t already have. I will be so sad if they go, my mum has a lot of denby that was my grandmas and our every day set is such good quality, even though it was supposedly factory seconds.

We have Denby and it lasts for ever. I just ordered some extra plates plus some pasta bowls and I’m pretty sure it will all outlast me. It would be very sad to see it go!
p.s. 15% off first order and seconds are equally indestructible.

Aghhhhhhhhhh · 23/03/2026 11:26

I live round the corner from Denby Pottery, ive never been inside and I looked online yesterday to see how much it cost as need new crockery... yeah for those prices I'll just buy from asda

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 23/03/2026 08:14

Wow - the prices… I was thinking I could maybe splurge on some distinctive fancy dinnerware as we are redoing our kitchen, but not at £10-£20 a piece. I have an IKEA set at the moment that’s at least as nice as the Denny options and is ten years in with no chips. We have replaced dishes here and there as I have a clumsy DH so we probably lose a plate or bowl a year when he drops one, which is fine as the IKEA set is cheap and easy to add to and replace.

There is no way IKEA crockery is as good as Denby

People who want to buy good and buy once. People who don't want disposable, cheap dinner sets.

I couldn’t afford Denby, and plenty of others couldn’t either. No need to be snippy about it

EvolvedAlready · 23/03/2026 12:41

I love Denby. Good quality. Their plates are not annoyingly noisey with cutlery, always a big win!
I hope they pull through. As a PP said, slightly reduce the price to attract more buyers, because it is a buy once item

Depends how you’re defining good. It looks nicer to me than anything on the Denby website and has survived nearly a decade with no chips. It might be less chip resistant than a Denby set, but why would I need anything better than that…

Maybe the IKEA set won’t last 25 years, but given I could buy it nearly ten times over for the same price as the Denby, I’m willing to replace it with another IKEA set.

I have Denby wine glasses, horrible thick chunky things. Much prefer my supermarket wine glasses and Edinburgh Crystal at Xmas. I so wanted those wine glasses too.....

Shame these treasured old British companies don't follow current trends as everything looks super old fashioned and Grandmas house to me.

Roomgigi · 23/03/2026 13:06

I think they lost their way some time ago. Whilst the colourway we have was not discontinued they basically only do plates/mugs/bowls in it now. Casseroles, serving dishes, jugs have all been deleted from the range

Define good, 10 years old for an everyday set with no chips sounds good to me!

My experience of Denby is that its not as indestructible as people are making out. Mine gets used once or twice a year and bits have been chipped and needed replacing

Waheymum · 23/03/2026 15:47

No, even the stuff on sale is way too expensive for a breakable object!

Nicewoman · 23/03/2026 18:16

Denby is indestructible and you’re paying for designer that lasts forever - why wouldn’t you buy a set?

Crazylady80 · 23/03/2026 18:59

I have some of the imperial blue set and it’s lasted me well over 15 years. It’s not faded or anything and is of good quality. I often lookout for Denby in sales but their discounts have never been low enough for me to be able to afford it. It’s very expensive unfortunately.

DilemmaDelilah · 23/03/2026 19:03

No. I don't like thick heavy china and I have a HUGE set of mid-century china that will last me for the next 50 years (or would do if I was still alive!)

I do have a few 1950s pieces in green, a teapot, large jug a couple of casserole dishes and some serving dishes which I use quite a bit, because they can be put in the oven, but I won't be buying any new stuff.

Moorcroft is a completely different story - not for eating from but they had some beautiful stuff. Sadly too expensive for me.

The expense is why. I had my dinner from a bowl that I bought (part of a set from a supermarket) for going to university over ten years ago.

Shinyhappyapple · 23/03/2026 20:09

I’m feeling a bit guilty here, as we had Denby pale green for our wedding present (1994). Having discovered that Tesco has a very similar range, we’ve bought replacements from there. I do get the point about it being British made so I will look to the original next time we need a replacement.

WendyFromTransvisionWamp · 23/03/2026 20:12

Thanks for the heads up OP! I’ve been looking to replace our (some chipped) Habitat breakfast bowls. Four new ones ordered, hopefully they last a long time. I went for the full price ones but the 15% off helps a bit.

Our dinner set is Strata by Jasper Conran-Wedgewood. It was on our wedding gift list, been used day in day out for 19 years and all parts are still immaculate. Only one plate has broken during this time.

Snowwhitesnow · 23/03/2026 20:17

If you have a John Lewis you can buy an item at a time. Or even better an outlet shop.

Snowwhitesnow · 23/03/2026 20:21

Just looked at Ikea plates etc and the style and colours look very similar! Other than made in China.

I thought the same when I was lusting after the pastel Denby pasta bowls my daughter has!
