I had a brilliant thread here back along. We liked hidden figures and suffragette and that kind of thing. It’s just dd1 and ne tonight so looking for something inspiring. Nothing too violent tia

Rabbit proof fence?

Jamfirstest · 21/03/2026 13:39

I have seen that but dd1 hasn’t that’s a great suggestion. I watched that in a hostel in Alice springs many years ago

Goodbye Lenin

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 21/03/2026 15:21

The Truman show
a man called otto
erin brokovitch
fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe
the green mile
the shawshank redemption

I’ve watched all of these with my 13 year old son and they have been hits.

Erin Brokovitch is a good shout.

Brassed Off

PeonyBulb · 21/03/2026 15:27

Enola Holmes

Tonissister · 21/03/2026 15:31

If you want a lighthearted film Legally Blonde is an absolute classic.

If you are okay with a tougher film with strong female leads: Silkwood, Erin Brokovitch, Three Billboards.

Upbeat films:
The Pursuit of Happyness
Eddie the Eagle
The Blind Side
Good Will Hunting
Amelie
Chocolat

Films with interesting takes on reality:
Sliding Doors
About Time
The Truman Show
Pleasantville

Real weepy but amazing true story with a pretty happy ending: Lion

My two loved Arrival.

Of more recent ones, I Swear is really good. Coda too.

threescoops · 21/03/2026 15:34

The best film we ever watched with sons when they were teenagers was Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

jay55 · 21/03/2026 16:24

I just watched Anniversary, on a plane, was excellent and has characters both age groups will resonate with.

ToadRage · 21/03/2026 16:27

The Fundaments of Caring
Pride
The Breakfast Club

Are just a few of our favourites.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 21/03/2026 16:28

ET
Mamma Mia
Eurovision: The Fire Saga Story

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/03/2026 16:33

Watched The Holdovers recently. Great film.

Oh yes, that's a beautiful film.

JuliettaCaeser · 21/03/2026 19:16

Housemaid is schlocky fun with a feminist end

Manzana · 21/03/2026 19:16

The most recent Far from the Madding Crowd is on Iplayer, a romantic story.

JuliettaCaeser · 21/03/2026 19:18

We found some of the older films really hadn’t aged well with teens. The Breakfast club is quite dark I wouldn’t watch that as a family. They also didn’t like Four Weddings. Stick with more recent ones.

The all female oceans 12 and ghostbusters are good.

mamaduckbone · 21/03/2026 22:53

The peanut butter falcon
the fundamentals of caring
ladybird
I swear

ToadRage · 23/03/2026 15:23

I'm struggling to understand what you think is dark about the breakfast club?

JuliettaCaeser · 23/03/2026 15:26

The sexual harassment of Molly Ringwald was quite an uncomfortable watch as a family. Think it’s more a Gen X film that our age group rate than for teens today.
