I had a brilliant thread here back along. We liked hidden figures and suffragette and that kind of thing. It’s just dd1 and ne tonight so looking for something inspiring. Nothing too violent tia

Things we've enjoyed as a family with dd 22 & ds 17. Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ballad of Wallace Island, any Wes Anderson film especially Asteroid City, any Studio Ghibli film especially Spirited Away, We've been focusing on sci fi which we all like. Just seen Project Hail Mary in the cinema which was very good also 2001 A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner both good but Blade Runner had some uncomfortable sexual aggression from the 'hero'. Interstellar and The Martian.

Anniversary
Practical Magic
The Holdovers
Small Things Like These

I watched The Odessa File the other night, I think it was on Talking Pictures TV. I'd never seen it before and thought it was very good.

I'm struggling to understand what you think is dark about the breakfast club?

DS loved the Breakfast Club, it's one of his favourites. It led to a brilliant discussion on stereotypes and sexualisation of girls. Exactly the same as when I first watched it in the 80s.
Edit should have quoted the post you answered!

Ghost

Needhelp101 · 23/03/2026 21:04

Pride! You'll laugh and cry and enjoy some of the most talented actors in Britain. Also a slice of interesting 80s history.

Testament of Youth.
If she likes suffragette and early women’s rights it’s a good film to introduce the massive changes that WW1 introduced. It’s also a love story and quite emotional.

It demonstrates just how far women’s rights have changed me in just over a century. Vera Britten was an incredible young woman, teaching herself Greek in order to gain a place at university when women were not allowed to graduate. The book it’s good too.

A Few Good Men. Strong female character who isn't there to have a relationship with one of the men.

My DD13 loves 10 things I hate about you. There are some issues to discuss but in general it has aged well.

CurlewKate · 23/03/2026 22:17

At 16 I would let her choose.

ToadRage · 24/03/2026 11:26

For something older. I love The Admirable Crichton. It's one of my favourite films. A wealthy father, his, their beau's and two servants are shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. The only one with skills you survive is the butler. If i say anymore I will spoil it but it's a good film.

Also recommend:
The Immitation Game
The Game Plan
Blended
The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (the Brendan Fraser one, not Tom Cruise).
Labyrinth
The Goonies
The Princess Bride (my all time favourite film)

Roystonv · 24/03/2026 22:00

Easy A, one of my favourites. Lucy possibly. Wild Target. Edge of Tomorrow, Salmon fishing in the Yemen. All good female leads.

Zurbaran · 25/03/2026 14:12

DD same age has enjoyed a lot of my late80s-90s faves
When Harry Met Sally
Sleepless in Seattle

If doing GCSES (or A level English) then films of the lit texts but I recommend Much Ado About Nothing to everyone, and Emma Thompson is outstanding.

We recently watched Dangerous Liaisons and now we’re on for Cruel Intentions 😂
