Hand luggage only: favourite bags that fit EasyJet and Ryanair sizers

We’ve got a few weekends away coming up, using both EasyJet and Ryanair, and I’m forcing myself to stick to hand luggage only.
I’m looking for recommendations of bags you own and love that fit in the bigger hand luggage sizers.

Would Ryanair let an early teen on the plane with a cuddly toy as well as a backpack that conforms to regulations? Or would the toy need to fit into the backpack as well?

How big is the toy?

Ryanair are ridiculous. They will try to charge you for anything. I was on a trip a few years ago when the ground hostess tried to take the wheels off my suitcase. She started a row with quite a few people in the queue. They seem to pick and choose what is ok according to where you are. I've seen huge bags be allowed through and then smaller ones be stopped and charged. Give them nothing. NOTHING!

It’s the arbitrariness of it all that annoys me and gets people’s backs up.
I’d rather they measure everyone’s bag rather than picking on random people, who’s bag might only be fractionally too big, when clearly oversized bags have been allowed on.

Probably due to them getting commission for every bag they can charge for at the gate. Ryanair give me the rage!

But they don’t actually seem to check that many bags…. I could pick out so many oversized bags that get let through. They could give me the commission!

But there's always the chance that it's YOUR bag they check! That's what they rely on.

Easyjet singled me out recently, and the utter disappointment on their faces when my bag fitted into the frame.....priceless!

I travel with Ryanair a lot and generally use a small Samsonite bag (Urbify XS duffle) that is the correct size. (This was a gift - they are not cheap - previously used a 25 year old changing bag that was also the right size.)

I have a separate bag for the odd time I fly with EasyJet (cheap from a market stall). The EasyJet size is much more generous so worth having a specific bag for travelling with them.

goingtotown · 25/03/2026 06:15

There’s now a £2.50 pay incentive for Ryanair staff with every oversized bag. Bags exceeding permitted sizes at boarding gate are charged up to £75.

@pouletvous

The ones I linked don't need a vacuum. You just seal them up and then squash out all of the air. I was initially a bit sceptical, but they massively increased the amount I could fit in the rucksack.

Ryanair bags need to be very small - I have this which was cheap and cheerful, fits perfectly and carries a surprisingly large amount of luggage for a couple of nights away

I use this. Ugly but does the job. I travel a lot and always over stuff it and it's held up well!

Yes absolutely this. My DP always travels with a bag that is slightly bigger than the limits and he's never been stopped...

Same here. Maybe we have scary looking husbands!

I’m travelling for 8 days and moving around on public transport so didnt want a case

SabrinaThwaite · 25/03/2026 19:42

Those convertible duffels are practical - I have a Mammut one that is overhead locker sized.

For the last 35 years I’ve been using a 70l Jack Wolfskin travel backpack for hold luggage - it’s got the additional big padded waist belt. Shame they don’t make them anymore as it’s getting towards the end of its life. DH has a similar Berghaus one.

Funnily enough I've had this in my amazon basket for a week or so, thanks for the endorsement! I have taken the plunge, going on a 2 night RA trip.
I have another backpack but it's EJ size, so a bit big
