Yorkies for Yorkshire puddings. See it on here all the time and can't bear it! Also faux casual cooking words- as in "then you can just pop it in the slow cooker/sling it in the oven". Bleugh

And afterwards you can "jump" in the shower.
I'm getting closer to an age at which I'm liable to break my hip if I jump onto a watery shower floor.

Don't mind cuppa, though I'd say brew. I absolutely hate 'baby daddy'.

Oh god and baby mama 🤮

Hate the word cuppa too and hubby, hubster, wifey, bubba, delish, brekkie and many more that I can’t think of 😂

This
OP you are not wrong, cuppa makes me cringe.
Also when people pronounce beautiful as
beewdiful.

Oh God don't get me started on all the minimising verbs! Hop on the bus, ping me an email, jump on a call, bob over the road. They can all pop themselves in the bin!

Allschoolsareartschools · 21/03/2026 08:55

Cuppa fine I think.
But a 'cuppa tea'...grrrr!! 😠

Myblueclematis · 21/03/2026 08:56

Hot choccy, telly or telly box, picky tea. All hideous!

YesssSpringHasSprung · 21/03/2026 08:58

Well that’s what it’s called 🤷🏻‍♀️

RipplePlease · 21/03/2026 08:59

It’s only a brew if it’s iron 😉

Na, that's a Bru Smile

I absolutely hate 'brew'.

Me too. It’s also up there with cuppa.

Miranda65 · 21/03/2026 09:09

'Cuppa'is awful, but 'brew'is almost as bad!

Enjoy this reply from a snooty waitress in the film Wish you were Here, when a customer asks for a cup of tea:

”we don’t do cups of tea, only pots, this is a cafe. If you want a cup of tea, sir, you must go to the caff, with the other riff-raff”.

Edited

Surely it’s a café?

VictoriaEra · 21/03/2026 08:04

Agree. Oh how I agree, OP. It gives me hives. The only thing worse is ‘GRAB a cuppa’

Worse still - grab a cheeky cuppa!

And agree with @Allschoolsareartschools that there's something extra irritating about "cuppa tea".

"Cuppa" is already an abbreviation of "cup of tea" so it seems like they can't make their mind up! Grin
I don't judge or disapprove or think anyone's inferior for using it though...

KaiserSozeHall · 21/03/2026 09:14

Shodan · 21/03/2026 08:35

Roasties, yorkies and 'all the trimmings'. I don't know why - perhaps they've been overused.

See also : bubbles or fizz for champagne or prosecco.

And, strangely -'enjoy'. As in 'you can enjoy a cup of tea in the tearoom.' Or 'Enjoy the log fire'. It feels...dictatorial, maybe?

Having said that, in this house we have 'spag bog' for dinner sometimes, so what do I know.

(And yes it's bog, not bol. Bol is for amateurs.😁)

I thought we were the only spag bog family! Hate "bol", "bog" is best. <nods>

KevinsSignatureShortdeads · 21/03/2026 09:14

Yes to all of these, along with “bubbles” or “fizz” for Champagne / Prosecco etc.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 21/03/2026 09:16

It goes along with

“picky bits” and my worst bug bear

“I know right” and “my bad”

whats wrong with people and the use of the English language!

I really dislike the phrase 'hating on', where just 'hating' would do.

Agree!

YABU OP. I use the term as a generic one meaning either a tea or a coffee. I’d never say “let’s go for a coffee” because I don’t like coffee, but saying “let’s go for a tea” sounds weird, and most of my friends drink coffee not tea. So “let’s go for a cuppa” covers it perfectly. What would you suggest I say in this scenario?

springawakeningss · 21/03/2026 09:24

When people call each other "babe"
Picky bits
Light bite
Sweet treat 🤢

Pineneedlesincarpet · 21/03/2026 09:26

Cuppa is awful. I'm so glad I'm not alone in my loathing. Brew is almost as bad. Sarnie is dreadful.

Pop is appalling. Pop on a coat. Pop a pizza in the oven. Yuk.

I can't stand the word dip in the food sense. When people on MN list things they might make for a lunch. It's nauseating. Not sure what alternative word one would use obviously.

Munch. No explanation required.

Nibbles and picky bits/picky bits tea have been covered extensively on MN. Unacceptable.

Hubby just gives an image of a middle aged frumpy American housewife in the boonies who wrestles racoons Sorry.

Tryanalogue · 21/03/2026 09:30

I started hating it 60 years ago.

I’m almost over that now, so don’t lose hope.

I have an irrational hatred of "cuppa" too. I'm so glad it's not just me. I don't even know why it grates on me, it just does.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 21/03/2026 07:18

I was about to say the same!
”Cuppa” can be irritating, but “hating on” is much worse.

When did we start hating “on” things? How is it different from just hating things?
OP do you “love on” things too, or just love them?

Yes, "hating on" is strange. Plus, hate is very over used. Perhaps "dislike"?.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 21/03/2026 09:34

Christ I hate that word.

Similarly "can I get". No you can't get it, I'm the waiter, I'll get it for you.

Also the way people have started using the Americanism couple. " I'll be there in a couple hours". It's a couple OF.

And 'veggies'.
