Friend insists fake nails are real and I’m bothered by lying

my friend lied that her fake nails were real. I have to say they don’t look real, it seemed like they were stuck on? It’s the lying that bothers me

Did you mean to sound condescending? I’m not really willing to post my life story on a thread that I made about my friend that I see regularly (potentially) lying to me about trivial things.

Ok, so yeah, you’re the problem on this and all your threads.

Ta-ra.

We just have to agree to disagree.

I think I’d worry more about your dog than your friends nails.

I think there are many things OP needs to worry about more than her friends nails

BauhausOfEliott · 18/03/2026 20:31

Looking at this and your other threads, I don’t think Mumsnet is a healthy place for you.

I think I agree. I’m too sensitive for social media.

It can be nice to vent though

Maybe she didn’t lie and just had gels over her real nails. Gel looks the same whether it’s put on false nails or real ones.

brightnails · 19/03/2026 10:26

if you lie about something small you’ll lie about something big, lying to your friend isn’t a good basis for a friendship, lying is disrespectful. and why is she trying to seem “effortlessly beautiful?” to her friend? concerning
by the way mine are gel

I once got told my hair is dyed. I said it wasnt, the person was insistent that my hair was dyed. They got very upset about it and accused me of lying. Ive never dyed my hair in my life

SparklyLeader · 19/03/2026 19:13

It's not lying. Your friend's nails are real. She paid for them, she wears them, and you can see them and touch them. They are not imaginary; they are real. If asked 'are her nails real,' the answer is yes, unless you want to start grilling every woman you see about their face lift, tummy tuck, boob job, skin resurfacing, makeup base, blush, eyelashes, (is that your real lip color? because I can tell it's fake) hair pieces, hair color, liposuction, etc., its alllll real. Otherwise you will make yourself miserable clocking every woman who says yes they (whatever it is) are real for anything and everything every woman has ever had done or undone, lifted, sucked, tucked, stuffed, girdled (is that your real stomach? haircolor? brows?), or stuck into or onto her body.

Whether or not you subscribe to her same process of identification, it is neither your business nor your position to gauge what she thinks about her own nails. You can safely, and with conviction, say yes, they are real.

Amira83 · 19/03/2026 19:17

They might be real tho, why would she lie about them being real ? There's no reason

OMGafourth · 19/03/2026 19:45

One of my friends has AMAZING nails. They look fake, because they are so long and shaped. However they are genuinely her natural nails, she just looks after them really well. Maybe your friend is similar 🤷‍♀️

The point is that the OP doesn’t actually know her friend is lying. As lots of people have pointed out, lots of nail treatments involve applying builder gel or dip powder to the client’s natural nails. But the OP has decided that her friend must have had nail extensions with no evidence for that.

People are always asking me if my nails are real. They are - but when I grow them long and have builder gel, they’re not really distinguishable from extensions.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 19/03/2026 21:34

Why are you friends?

Peak 90s attitude. You go sis. Uh huh.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/03/2026 16:20

How important is this, really?

They aren't your nails, they definitely exist whether they are made of keratin, acrylic or gel and it just doesn't matter.

It does matter in a way. Idiots need to learn the difference, gaslighting people is not acceptable. We already live in a world where the leader of a massive country has changed the meaning of the word truth, it needs to be stopped.

I knew a woman, in her late fifties at the time, who had turquoise eyes. 👀 I asked her where did she get the lenses, she claimed it was her natural eye colour!! FFS. I asked her son, he confirmed they were lenses. She was a flake, really annoying though, we're both adults, why lie. Pathetic.

Catcatcatcatcat · 20/03/2026 08:53

Seriously? Why would this take up an ounce of your energy?

Squirrel60 · 20/03/2026 09:42

Urm..... I totally fail to understand how it could possibly be any of your business.

Are they real or fake? Nothing to do with you.

Did she lie? Also, nothing to do with you.

It seems to me you really need to come out of your sad, lonely little hidey hole and actually get a life, as you obviously don't have one!

DrJackDaniels · 20/03/2026 10:08

Someone mentioned my false nails to me once and I said they’re real. They’re long but have a hard gel on them to stop them breaking, but they’re my real nails, no extensions or tips. Hers might be the same? Why are you so bothered if you’re not even sure she’s lying? If she had a bob one day and bum length hair the next and claimed it was natural with no extensions, I’d get it, but this??

They can be both real and fake. Her nails can have grown under the acrylics or gel so it is her real nails you are seeing. They can also be fake as the nails are covered in acrylic or gel. Not really sure why it matters though?

thefloorislavayes · 20/03/2026 13:30

Perhaps you don’t understand how gel nails work?

I think I this is it. If my DD has BIab gel regularly her nails can get very long. But it is her real nails that are long, there are no acrylic tips or full acrylic nails. Just biab gel polish.
