2nd day of new job calling in sick ????

I’m mortified. I had bit of cold yesterday, took paracetamol and ibuprofen, went to my first day at new job. You know what it’s like, adrenaline keeps you going, but I came home and felt really really run down. I barely slept at night, because meds didn’t really work. I know it’ll look bad calling in sick on my second day but I’m genuinely ill, my temperature is about 39C, my throat is aching so much, shivers, headache, my face feels really tender to touch on my cheeks like it is with sinusitis. Are they going to think I’m taking the mickey? I was so upbeat yesterday, really enjoyed my first day, I’m gutted today😢

It’s not ideal, but I wouldn’t want to work next to you if you’re ill. It’s just one of those things. Call in sick.

EverardDeTroyes · 18/03/2026 07:04

Argh! That is so awkward! Any possibility of going in and being sent home? Though, after Covid, I know many people would consider that a worse crime.

KittyPup · 18/03/2026 07:04

Dose up and force yourself in. You can’t call in sick on your second day.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/03/2026 07:06

Even if they send you home for being sick, you do need to go to work if you want a chance of keeping it.

marshj81 · 18/03/2026 07:06

poor you, just call in sick if you’re too rough to go in, worse to spread your germs about. Yes it’s not great timing but it can’t be helped. Feel better soon.

Dozer · 18/03/2026 07:07

In that situation I would take painkillers and go in. Unless bedridden.

that’s the situation😭I took 1g of paracetamol and 400mg of ibuprofen and it’s not coming down. Same last night before I went to bed although I mixed doses by accident and took 1.5g of paracetamol and 400mg of ibuprofen and had crap night regardless

If it’s a cold an you can dose yourself up then go in. If it’s flu and you can’t get out of bed then there’s nothing you can do, it’s awkward but it happens

Holdonforsummer · 18/03/2026 07:11

I would go into, sorry. I remember going in with an infected tooth abscess one day shortly after I’d started a new job as I was so desperate to make a good impression. Where I work we often don’t pass people’s probation period if they are off sick too much in the first 3 months. Good luck.

DogAnxiety · 18/03/2026 07:11

If you have a temp of 39 and it isn’t coming down with paracetamol and ibuprofen you need medical advice.

I don’t think you can go in, it would be unfair on your colleagues.

Spaghettea · 18/03/2026 07:11

Don't go in. I go right off colleagues who spread their germs around. As long as your boss isn’t an idiot I'm sure it will be fine.
Please be considerate and feel better soon.

Itsmetheflamingo · 18/03/2026 07:12

This has happened to me- it was neurovirus. I don’t think it was well received but when i was back I worked harder to prove myself.

an employee of mine had this recently but had been hospitalised tbf

I think as the others say it’s a case of whether you can survive the journey and day doses up or whether it’s really so bad you won’t manage it.

In most jobs you can’t take time off everytime you have a cold

MiniMaxi · 18/03/2026 07:12

Sounds like you need antibiotics with those symptoms. Let them know you’re ill - then see a doc, get a note to prove you’re genuinely unwell, with antibiotics you’ll feel better in 24-48h.

I’m in senior management and can’t stand it when people come in sick to work. It’s totally unnecessary and exposes others.

Kittylickingplate · 18/03/2026 07:12

Meds, face mask, hand sanitizer and go in. Hopefully they will send you home. I am so sorry but second day ...

This sounds a bit worse than a cold. You don't get a nasty temperature with a cold. Unless they want other people off ill then it's best to stay at home.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 18/03/2026 07:17

You must go in. They may send you home but it’s an awful start if you take time off so early.

LilyLemonade · 18/03/2026 07:18

If you have a temperature you cannot go in. It is unfortunate but there is it. You need to call in sick.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 18/03/2026 07:20

You have a fever, you shouldn't be in work. You could make other people ill and yourself worse. Rest up and I hope you feel better soon OP.

Zanatdy · 18/03/2026 07:26

I’d dose up and go in. They can send you home if need be.

Marchspringss · 18/03/2026 07:28

With fever like that I definitely wouldn’t go in. Job or not job.

AutumnLover1990 · 18/03/2026 07:29

I would go in at least. If you're really ill then go home.

outofofficeagain · 18/03/2026 07:32

Have any of you read about the meningitis outbreak? Or Covid?

I’m not saying this is what OP has but all the ‘dose yourself up and send yourself in with a temperature of 39’ people, GET A FUCKING GRIP.

This is how vulnerable people die.

Hels20 · 18/03/2026 07:32

Can you work from home? I wouldn’t go in. Extremely unfortunate but I got sick a week after starting a new job and had to take a week off (it was flu). I struggled in the day it hit me and had to get a taxi in as couldn’t use public transport and they sent me home. Poor you.

CarlaLemarchant · 18/03/2026 07:34

Do what you need to do. They won’t be impressed as they don’t know you and yes, they will consider that you are taking the piss, but hopefully, when you recover, you’ll be able to make a good impression.
