2nd day of new job calling in sick ????

I’m mortified. I had bit of cold yesterday, took paracetamol and ibuprofen, went to my first day at new job. You know what it’s like, adrenaline keeps you going, but I came home and felt really really run down. I barely slept at night, because meds didn’t really work. I know it’ll look bad calling in sick on my second day but I’m genuinely ill, my temperature is about 39C, my throat is aching so much, shivers, headache, my face feels really tender to touch on my cheeks like it is with sinusitis. Are they going to think I’m taking the mickey? I was so upbeat yesterday, really enjoyed my first day, I’m gutted today😢

She probably caught it from a colleague on her first day.

Not sure it works that quickly.

Wow triggered 😂 I feel I hit a nerve for you there. Perhaps you have a very low threshold for sickness too. FYI I am out there day in day out grafting. I work 7 days a week for my family. Staff work the hours they agreed to, from 4-30, their choice. Furthermore, i never expect anyone to do anything I wouldn't do despite being twice the age of most of my team. I pay a decent wage and will not apologise for being from an era where you don't stand on your phones all day and use work time to check your own emails etc. work is work, it should be enjoyable and employees should be valued but this works both ways and work is work not a hobby. I expect people to be reliable and if they are off sick to give me a decent amount of notice.

If new starters do a no show in the first week it's a red flag fore and if that triggers you so much, that really is a you issue

Ah! You've revealed your full true colours here! I have actively stated that I rarely take a day off sick and that's been the case all my working life and I'm 46 now! You are a workaholic misery! You only work 7 days because you want to because you have nothing in your life that you want to take even one day off for? How shit must your family feel when you can't stand to even spend one single day with them? You never should have had kids if you weren't willing to spend a single day of their lives with them. You're life will mortify you when you get old and never did anything with it, and you dedicated your whole life to being a workaholic, a bad mother and a bullying boss!

Wow people just reel off a load of assumptions on here 😂 I have a small team of dedicated staff who work with my company because they want to. They work whatever hours suit them by arrangement and I have no problem with people giving REASONABLE notice if they or one of their children/family starts to feel unwell. No an hour before they are due in or on day 2 of their employment. If I have customers booked it is not fair on them and their neurodiverse children to cancel them last minute. So before making assumptions perhaps think about how many people can be negatively affected by last minute sickness. Had the person messaged me the night before when they started to feel unwell (sore throat), I could have postponed bookings but people were already en route when the person called in sick. If you were the customer and it was your child, you may see it slightly differently.

Nah, too late to backpedal, you painter yourself to be a terrible, angry workaholic that spends no time at home and tears into employees that won't do the same! It's not healthy to be obsessed with working 7 days a week, you likely not live a long life and your family won't miss you because they've never had you, not even one day a week!

MulberryFresser · 20/03/2026 10:46

OP I hope that you are feeling better now x

I think you may be quoting yourself there. As the old saying goes " it takes one to know one" you assume I am this or that but you are a real mean playground bully type, can't bear for anyone else to have their own opinion if it doesn't align with yours. Also it's a tad hypocritical saying you never take a day off sick (so you are at work) and then judging others that also work?

Fyi I run my business from home on several acres of beautiful woodland and fields and so i am in and out of the house all day even when "at work". I hope your judgemental, mean attitude doesn't run off on your children.

Ps is that you at work (is this a demo of your work ethic right now? Playing on the internet in your employers time? Oh no silly me, you will say it's a day off) 😂

No backpedaling here. You have some Delusions of grandeur going on there I think 🤔 😂 one comment on mumsnet and you have turned into a keyboard warrior/troll. Calm down before you make yourself ill #theIrony

ZenGarden89 · 20/03/2026 14:51

You poor thing. You may have the flu. I had it myself and it comes on really quickly and with all the symptoms you describe. If you do have it it will take a bit of time to recover. Hope you feel better soon 💝

And I’m glad your boss was understanding. It’s not ideal but when you’re that ill there is nothing you can do. If you think you’re going to be out next week I think I’d offer to take unpaid leave as a gesture of goodwill.

SockPlant · 20/03/2026 08:48

so again: you are fine exploiting your staff and demand they work when sick because nobody can give 2 weeks notice of a sudden dehabilitating illness.

Again: your structures are not robust enough for your staff.

You keep stating 2 weeks, where are you plucking this from 🤔 I think you will find, if you refer back toy last reply, that I actually said a person letting me know when they start to feel ill (12 hours before due in) was preferred as opposed to less than an hour before. A totally reasonable request

NemesisInferior · 19/03/2026 21:48

If you would rather people force themselves in and have to go home again, having achieved nothing but potentially spreading their germs about you are both a stupid and an uncaring employer, and i bet your employees hate working for you.

You sound pampered.
Most people with a cold go to work anyway - most people can't afford not to.

Yes. But a fever?

This thread is mad.

How many times do people on this thread have to tell you that what OP has described is not a bloody cold?!

I guess you must be one of those people I was talking about upthread who think Covid and flu are 'just a cold'. If that's the case, then all I can say is count yourself lucky because you must have a very robust immune system. Not all of us are as fortunate.

Banannanana · 22/03/2026 17:15

For gods sake just tough it up. You’ll feel shit but it won’t kill you.

daleylama · 25/03/2026 23:38

xogossipgirlxo · 18/03/2026 07:09

that’s the situation😭I took 1g of paracetamol and 400mg of ibuprofen and it’s not coming down. Same last night before I went to bed although I mixed doses by accident and took 1.5g of paracetamol and 400mg of ibuprofen and had crap night regardless

Call in and ask what they would prefer you do. Some would absolutely not want your lurgy spread around the staff

Do you go to work with the flu, then?

On probation? Yes, literally did it two months ago because I hadn’t completed my probation at my job.

It was shit and hard and not fun, but I kept my job.

I don’t know specifics about your industry OP, but I have seen people fail probation for too much sick time.
