2nd day of new job calling in sick ????

I’m mortified. I had bit of cold yesterday, took paracetamol and ibuprofen, went to my first day at new job. You know what it’s like, adrenaline keeps you going, but I came home and felt really really run down. I barely slept at night, because meds didn’t really work. I know it’ll look bad calling in sick on my second day but I’m genuinely ill, my temperature is about 39C, my throat is aching so much, shivers, headache, my face feels really tender to touch on my cheeks like it is with sinusitis. Are they going to think I’m taking the mickey? I was so upbeat yesterday, really enjoyed my first day, I’m gutted today😢

It sounds like a cold. Remember when peole worked
through those?

now we’re all expected to go into isolation with one

somanychristmaslights · 18/03/2026 07:34

All the people telling to you go in, I wonder how they’d feel if you came and sat next to them in an office, sweating through fever and looking horrendous. They’d soon change their minds then!!

outofofficeagain · 18/03/2026 07:32

Have any of you read about the meningitis outbreak? Or Covid?

I’m not saying this is what OP has but all the ‘dose yourself up and send yourself in with a temperature of 39’ people, GET A FUCKING GRIP.

This is how vulnerable people die.

She’s not going to die

JC89 · 18/03/2026 07:36

It's unfortunate but they might not be keen on you coming in and spreading it round the office! Anything you can do from home - are you well enough for that? I'd probably stay in bed and try to get better, then put in extra effort once back at work.

Bitchcraft · 18/03/2026 07:37

Ah that's unfortunate. I wouldn't go in with a temp like that. Who knows how bad you'll feel in a couple of hours? I'd call in and mention the temperature and the fact that you don't want to infect anyone and hopefully your boss is a normal person and just tells you to get some rest. I'd probably offer to do some work/reading/training from home as a token gesture, but that's just me and I'm overly conscientious when it comes to work. 😅

I once got tonsillitis 3 days into a new job. I rang my new boss and she was lovely. Obviously I wouldn't have got any work done as I was so ill and she just told me to chill and come back when I was better. Hope you feel better soon!

xOlive · 18/03/2026 07:37

I’d go in, I’d want them to see how poorly I am and if they send me home, great.
It’ll 100% look like you hated your first day and you’re fobbing them off.
Unless you’re absolutely bedridden and can’t even make it to the kitchen, you need to try.

Atatwalker · 18/03/2026 07:38

Dose up. And go in with a mask.

Agree please be careful with the health of others

Jowak1 · 18/03/2026 07:38

I had tonsillitis the weekend before my new job started on a Monday. I was praying I would be ok but wasn’t. I spoke to my new manager and she was really nice and said getting ill can’t be helped and it’s better to start when you’re well! Call in sick get better soon! X

dicentra365 · 18/03/2026 07:39

People understand that sometimes illness comes at a bad time. You will have a chance to prove yourself later. Don’t spread germs to your new colleagues.

Catisheavyonmylap · 18/03/2026 07:39

How much work are you really going to get done feeling that ill? Be brave and ring in, let them hear how unwell you’re feeling and how bad you feel to let them done but stress there is no option but to stay home. Hope you feel better soon!

She’s not going to die

I’m not saying she is. But someone might.

My son had cancer and was immunocompromised. I was constantly terrified of catching colds and flu as taking that home could literally kill him. If someone had come into work with those symptoms I would probably have fired them on the spot.

PuppyMonkey · 18/03/2026 07:39

Do you know who is the proper person to call OP because that’s what I’d do - ie don’t text someone. Speak to them and explain about your temperature and feeling dreadful etc.

678socks · 18/03/2026 07:40

Please please don’t go in, the person sitting next to you could be living with a cancer patient (or similar) undergoing chemo (or similar).

AnonKat · 18/03/2026 07:40

I did this on day 3. Started vomited at work. Boss drove me home! And ive been there 14 years now.

She’s got a fever what are you talking about.

FebruaryClouds · 18/03/2026 07:40

Definitely call in sick - a temp of 39 can’t really be argued with (although god knows why people on this thread are trying)

popcornandpotatoes · 18/03/2026 07:41

I had to call in sick on my second week once. It was my first job working with children and I was really really ill. I later learned it happened to nearly everyone who joined if they weren't used to working with young children 🤣

Not ideal but if you are ill you are ill

You’d have fired someone on the spot for coming in to work with a cold? You’d have got yourself a nice meeting from that I imagine.

Dressses · 18/03/2026 07:43

I would not go in. Imagine how unpopular you'll be if others catch it. It's unfair for your colleagues. Call and explain.

CoCoJones26 · 18/03/2026 07:43

Phone them early, explain and ask what they'd prefer you to do!

Holdonforsummer · 18/03/2026 07:11

I would go into, sorry. I remember going in with an infected tooth abscess one day shortly after I’d started a new job as I was so desperate to make a good impression. Where I work we often don’t pass people’s probation period if they are off sick too much in the first 3 months. Good luck.

Go In so they can see youre ill and then go home.

Bunnycat101 · 18/03/2026 07:52

I think you sound properly Ill and shouldn’t go in. It doesn’t look brilliant but it can’t be helped. It’s very rare as an adult I’ve had a fever of 39. The few times I have, it’s been a bacterial infection needing antibiotics.

I’ve got a cold at the moment and feel grotty but it’s one that I can drug up for and power through. Highest my temp has got is 37.7

RosesAndHellebores · 18/03/2026 07:55

If you can get up, get washed and dressed and keep down a cup.of tea, you go in. If not you telephone your line manager and explain.

Years ago I had severe vomiting which started on day three of a new job. I had two days off and they phoned my last employer to see if I was reliable. Fortunately I was and former employer told them I was v reliable and if I was sick I must be very sick.

H202too · 18/03/2026 07:59

Ugh presenteeism still exists even after Covid and now this Men B outbreak.
It is bad timing but can't go in if really that bad.
