Cadburys in Ireland - Original Recipe?

FlyingUnicornWings · 14/03/2026 11:54

Irish lovely people,

Can you tell me if it’s true the Cadburys over there is the original recipe (before Kraft took over and pumped it full of palm oil)?

I’m coming to Dublin in a couple of weeks and if you have original Cadburys I plan on buying A LOT. Not all of it, I’ll leave some for you.

Thanks!

I have heard that freddo are made over there so are still the original recipe. I haven’t got around to checking ingredients though, so I’m keen to hear if it’s true. 🙏🏻

A member of the Cadbury family set up a chocolate company, Love cocoa I think it’s called, apparently that’s the original recipe, although I believe he’s since sold the company. A bit pricey though so I haven’t tried it yet.

The Cadbury’s is so much better in Ireland. I can really taste the difference so there must be different recipes used.

tartyflette · 14/03/2026 14:08

I believe (or possibly read it on here) that Cadbury’s Flake is still made to the original recipe because more palm oil etc doesn’t work with the Flake shape and format.
But I haven’t had a Flake for years😥so cannot confirm this. Give it a try?

No idea if this helps at all cos it's an easter egg but it was bought (and eaten) in Ireland

Cadburys in Ireland - Original Recipe?

I had a Cadburys Christmassy thing a few months ago, might have been "Christmas puddings", and it tasted like the original recipe. I noticed it was made in Ireland. Bought in B and M!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/03/2026 17:41

I believe this because the Irish ones when I can get them seem to taste better but I don’t have any evidence to prove it. There’s still a factory there though

Nicecatneighbour · 15/03/2026 17:47

I had a Twirl habit as they tasted great and were made in Ireland, but got one last week and buggers have snuck palm oil in! I could tell at the first bite. 😒
Do they have to enshittify everything? 😭

SaucepanRattle · 15/03/2026 18:10

If you have a Morrisons near you they have a small Irish section which includes Taytos and Irish Cadbury Dairy Milk. In particular my favourites are Tiffin and Mint Crisp.

So yes Irish Dairy Milk tastes different to English bought stuff.

You’re lucky my Morrisons doesn’t have an Irish section

Just checked my Irish bought Dairy Milk bar and the ingredients are the same except that it says it may contain wheat as well as nuts, so must be made in a different factory.
Also the protein is slightly lower at 7.3g per 100g.

The recycling advice says UK only so not sure where it’s made though 🤔

BlackMilk · 15/03/2026 20:18

No, it isn’t like it used to be here either.
Maybe it is worse in the UK but it has definitely declined in quality here in Ireland.
It sort of varies between the different products though.

I would have thought it would be a standard recipe. I can’t imagine why it would be different here.

Buscake · 15/03/2026 20:20

Not sure but it definitely tastes different (better!) in Ireland. My mum brings me over golden crisp every time she visits - unbeatable chocolate 🖤

BlackMilk · 15/03/2026 20:34

The ingredients of dairy milk are identical in Ireland and the UK, according to the Cadbury websites .ie and co.uk.

I don’t know but people are saying it tastes different 🤷‍♀️

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 15/03/2026 23:51

I'm headed to NI soon, do they also have proper Cadburys?

deeahgwitch · 16/03/2026 00:05

If it says OCO on a little section on the back it’s made in the Cadbury factory in Coolock, Dublin.

I think it’s a chocolate-related urban myth…

NotSoLittle · 16/03/2026 00:09

I heard it tastes better because the milk used in Irish Cadbury is from grass-fed cows

whysorude · 16/03/2026 00:26

Historically, Cadbury Ireland has always tasted different to Cadbury UK. More creamy and less sugary. If I remember correctly this was because the Irish receipe had more milk than the UK one.

Since Kraft, and later Mondelez, took over the introduction of palm oil has destroyed the taste. However, it still tastes better than Cadbury UK and I stock up on it when home. Especially Tiffan bars.

Papercompany · 16/03/2026 00:35

I'm Irish - Cadburys today tastes completely different from when I was young. I remember letting the chocolate melt on my tongue - it doesn't do that now. And it would leave a lovely chocolatety taste afterwards in your mouth - it doesn't do that now.

I think that it looks the same but does NOT taste the same. It is made with palm oil and has a low cocoa content. Very disappointing.

Does anyone have a chocolate they would recommend that tastes like Cadbury used to taste like in the nineties?!

DramaAlpaca · 16/03/2026 00:45

Nope, it's as full of palm oil as the UK stuff, sadly 😥

SconesAreABreakfastFood · 16/03/2026 00:49

The factory making chocolate crumb (the basis for the chocolate) in Kerry makes two different recipes, one for Ireland, one for the UK. So yes it is different and it does taste better.

Are you one of the insider people who supplies friends with discard crumbs in the Rathmore area??

1000StrawberryLolliesandPrincessofLichtenstein · 16/03/2026 02:27

It’s all greasy waxy crap here in Ireland now too. I can’t imagine how awful the UK ones must be if you’ve had it recently and you think it’s nicer.
