Cadburys in Ireland - Original Recipe?

FlyingUnicornWings · 14/03/2026 11:54

Irish lovely people,

Can you tell me if it’s true the Cadburys over there is the original recipe (before Kraft took over and pumped it full of palm oil)?

I’m coming to Dublin in a couple of weeks and if you have original Cadburys I plan on buying A LOT. Not all of it, I’ll leave some for you.

Thanks!

There’s much nicer chocolate than Cadburys.
Stop buying it ppl, then they might get it and change it back to the original.

The factory making chocolate crumb (the basis for the chocolate) in Kerry makes two different recipes, one for Ireland, one for the UK. So yes it is different and it does taste better.

Why though?

Someone recommended Tony's Chocolonley to me as not containing palm oil, so im going to pick one up today. Purely in the name of consumer research, obviously. 👩‍🏫 🍫🔎

Irish cadburys mint crisp is my all time favourite and has been since I was a kid. It hasn’t changed. M uncle (dairy farmer) always claimed it was because of the milk! My family send it over for me if I haven’t been back for a while.

PearPartridge · 16/03/2026 09:26

I did look up the ingredients and they were identical in both countries. I ordered some Irish Cadbury in lockdown after reading about it being better on mumsnet, but didn't notice any difference

CoconutSnowball · 16/03/2026 09:26

If the barcode says OCO it’s made in Dublin. Mainly the 8-square bars and Twirls full size, two fingers. Not the massive bars you get in Tesco or multipacks

I got a bar of this for free with my Tesco delivery once. I was very underwhelmed. I actually ended up throwing half of it away.

Oh no! Can you give me a better recommendation for nice palm oil free chocolate? 🙏

Savvysix1984 · 16/03/2026 10:20

You can get the 8 bar Cadbury’s in Lidl in NI (next to the tills). I’ve ate it alongside a larger Cadbury’s bar and they taste very different. 8 bar is much nicer.

Munchyseeds2 · 16/03/2026 10:42

Cadbury are just waiting for those of us who remember how lovely dairy milk tasted (and smelt!) to pop off this mortal coil!
It's disgusting now.

KarenPirie · 16/03/2026 10:47

I bought this in a petrol station in NI - I haven’t seen it in any supermarkets. It’s definitely made in Ireland and does taste lovely and different from Cadbury uk chocolate

I’m not overly impressed with Tony Chocolonelys either.

I used to get my SIL to bring back Cadbury Dairy Milk from Dublin - so much nicer than what is available in UK

SconesAreABreakfastFood · 16/03/2026 13:39

@BlackMilk I don’t know, maybe we’re fussier about our chocolate. All I know is the Irish crumb has more milk in it and is creamier. I don’t work there but my husband has to go there regularly and I’ve no reason to think he’d make that up.

Munchyseeds2 · 16/03/2026 14:42

Dairy milk made in Canada is the original as well I think
Shame it's so far away

You’re lucky my Morrisons doesn’t have an Irish section

Ours is a teeny tiny section. One bay only, but it has a few Irish products. Near the Polish, Italian etc area.

No me neither. I have transferred my chocoholic tendencies to Aldi and I’ve always been a Cadbury girl. Aldi do a lovely dark chocolate bar with mint fondant in. And a lovely Turkish Delight bar that tastes a bit like the big Dairy Milk version that you can’t get any more. Oh and not forgetting a bar a bit like Tony’s Chocoloney (but nicer, bigger and much cheaper) with the salted pretzels (don’t get Tesco’s version of this, it’s pants).

Thesnailonthewhale · 16/03/2026 20:26

According to Cadbury.ie. And Cadbury UK. They have exactly the same ingredients.

So no the Irish isn't the original recipe. And is full of palm fats and nonsense.

Same! 🙁

Starbri8 · 16/03/2026 20:33

Cadbury’s is now disgusting in Ireland , it’s flavourless , such a pity , I refuse to buy it . 🥲

SconesAreABreakfastFood · 16/03/2026 21:10

They may be the same ingredients, but they are not in the same proportions. It’s not as nice as it used to be but it is definitely superior to the waxy stuff in the multipacks and big bars. The little bars here are so much nicer, a caramello and a caramel bar are worlds apart.

Caramello are amazing nothing like a Caramel bar

coffeebeansplease · 16/03/2026 22:49

here in NI we have both. For good Irish Cadbury chocolate you need to buy golden crisp or mint crisp. Loads of the shops stock them.

Is this not simply because the honeycomb bits and extra flavouring mask the fact that the chocolate has changed in texture/ taste though?

I honestly think this may have once been true (that Irish Cadburys is better), but now it’s just a psychological/ suggestibility thing.

SconesAreABreakfastFood · 16/03/2026 23:58

@BlackMilk Ive already told you it is different. It is a different recipe. Whether you think it tastes better or not (it does), is a matter of opinion but how can you say it’s suggestibility when it is literally a different product?

You can read all the packaging backs you want, but anyone who works in Rathmore Cadburys factory will tell you the same. Two types of crumb, two types of chocolate. What are you not understanding?
