Cadburys in Ireland - Original Recipe?

FlyingUnicornWings · 14/03/2026 11:54

Irish lovely people,

Can you tell me if it’s true the Cadburys over there is the original recipe (before Kraft took over and pumped it full of palm oil)?

I’m coming to Dublin in a couple of weeks and if you have original Cadburys I plan on buying A LOT. Not all of it, I’ll leave some for you.

Thanks!

here in NI we have both. For good Irish Cadbury chocolate you need to buy golden crisp or mint crisp. Loads of the shops stock them.

Someone bought me a big mint crisp at Christmas because it used to be one of my favourites and most of it is still in the fridge. It's gross now. Before that I hadn't eaten Cadburys in months because it's horrible so I would say unless UK Cadburys is some how even worse Irish Cadburys isn't nicer.

Catlady007007 · 17/03/2026 00:28

Buy a chocolate called 'Butlers' in Ireland. It is still a milk choc but much higher quality.

I have heard that freddo are made over there so are still the original recipe. I haven’t got around to checking ingredients though, so I’m keen to hear if it’s true. 🙏🏻

A member of the Cadbury family set up a chocolate company, Love cocoa I think it’s called, apparently that’s the original recipe, although I believe he’s since sold the company. A bit pricey though so I haven’t tried it yet.

You know, I don’t know of this is true about the Freddo but I have recently been buying them by choice as I’m trying to reduce my intake with the smaller portion size.

I’ve said to DH the taste is creamier than the palm oil Cadbury bars we buy in England.
I thought it was perhaps because theyd put less rubbish in chocolate designed for kids.
They taste like Cadburys used to.

I’m not overly impressed with Tony Chocolonelys either.

Nor me. Tasteless slime.

Irish cadburys mint crisp is my all time favourite and has been since I was a kid. It hasn’t changed. M uncle (dairy farmer) always claimed it was because of the milk! My family send it over for me if I haven’t been back for a while.

Yes!
I buy big boxes Mint Crisp on Amazon when I’m feeling spendy.
They seem to only sell it in England at Christmas now in giant bars (not that I mind the size!) so Amazon is my only source.

In general though I agree chocolate that Cadbury chocolate is not what it was.

Best alternatives for simple non flavoured chocolate I have found is Milka alpine or Lindt’s big gold bar.

Not so mad on Chocoloney.

@BlackMilk Ive already told you it is different. It is a different recipe. Whether you think it tastes better or not (it does), is a matter of opinion but how can you say it’s suggestibility when it is literally a different product?

You can read all the packaging backs you want, but anyone who works in Rathmore Cadburys factory will tell you the same. Two types of crumb, two types of chocolate. What are you not understanding?

What products are made with the better crumb plz? Desperate.

Luxlumos · 17/03/2026 04:42

It’s horrid stuff now, nothing like the chocolate in my childhood. UK cadburys must be shocking if the Irish version tastes better.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/03/2026 04:49

I still like Dairy Milk and it still melts in my mouth. Keep trying to switch to two squares of plain chocolate but it doesn't have the right mouth feel.

Myfridgeiscool · 17/03/2026 07:45

A lot of chocolate feels like eating a warm candle these days. It’s the completely wrong texture, so soft and waxy.
I only eat Waitrose own brand dark chocolate now, it’s all a bit sad really.
Chocolate used to be wonderful!
I keep seeing adverts for Ribena online…they’re harping on about nostalgia: how it tasted years ago. That tastes absolutely rank now it’s filled with chemical sweeteners.

MadeForThis · 17/03/2026 09:05

I’ve only noticed a difference with the 8 square bars. Mint Crisp etc. The rest is exactly the same.

bissom · 17/03/2026 09:59

I don't ask my SIL to bring back cadbury dairy milk any longer as the quality has dipped to nearer UK standards in recent years.

deeahgwitch · 17/03/2026 17:19

Cadburys don’t even have the word chocolate on the front on the purple wrapper.
They can’t legally.
What a shame.
What faceless, nameless Kraft / Mondalez executive decided to alter and ruin Cadbury’s chocolate ?
They bought the company because it made great products loved by consumers.
Why change the product then ?
That faceless, nameless Mondalez executive is a gobshite.

igelkott2026 · 17/03/2026 17:51

I bought some Mini Eggs in Iceland and they were ok.

A few weeks later I bought another bag and they were yuck.

So I wondered if the ones I'd bought in Iceland had been hanging around since last year and were an older recipe!

But I bought Lidl's copy the other day and they are much nicer.

elfendom1 · 17/03/2026 22:07

Part of the waxiness is down to the emulsifiers used as much as palm oil. These are one key difference from the olden days. This is also why UK and Irish chocolate may taste different even though they appear to have the exact same ingredients, the percentages of each component used are not listed, and may differ. I haven't tasted UK cadburys but I think the Dairy Milks here in Ireland are horrible. Flake and twirl are ok, I imagine this is because the ingredients ratios have to be different to create the aerated or flaky effects.

WonderfulSmith · 17/03/2026 22:15

Nicecatneighbour · 16/03/2026 10:02

Oh no! Can you give me a better recommendation for nice palm oil free chocolate? 🙏

Marks and Spencer’s. Their regular chocolate is great but their ‘kit kats’ are something else.

Yes! I’m going to buy ALL the Easter eggs 😂 Thank you!

If you have a Morrisons near you they have a small Irish section which includes Taytos and Irish Cadbury Dairy Milk. In particular my favourites are Tiffin and Mint Crisp.

So yes Irish Dairy Milk tastes different to English bought stuff.

I do and I’m going to pop in today, thanks!

They have coffee shops everywhere and they sell boxes of chocs. (and individual chocs so you can try first to make sure you like it).

deeahgwitch · 19/03/2026 17:11

Butlers Cafe (chocolate shop too ) give you a chocolate when you buy a drink- you choose the one you want.
Their cappuccino is lovely.
They also do delicious toasties but I think they have sadly dropped their magnificent mushroom one.

Edited

It does still taste though, maybe give one a go if you're over (unless the use of palm oil is an ethical dilemma)

Different doesn’t necessarily mean better, does it?
Or did your husband specifically say that they make a different, better crumb for the Irish market?
I have read up a bit on this since I was last on here out of interest and according to every source, the only difference in the way Cadbury’s chocolate is manufactured worldwide is the milk- not the quantity but different milk from different cows produces a slightly different taste. It doesn’t necessarily make it taste better or worse, it just might not be what you’re used to.
Logically, why on earth would they make chocolate to a superior recipe just for the Irish market anyway? It doesn’t make any sense.
It’s not Willy Wonka’s Factory we are talking about. The ingredients are there on the back and the nutritional information indicates that the quantities are more or less the same as well as the ingredients being identical.

BlackMilk · 20/03/2026 12:41

Three of my uncles worked in Cadburys in Coolock. Two met their wives there. I still have a few cousins and in laws working there.
Out of interest, I’ll ask them. They are going to think I’ve lost the plot but I’ll report back 😅

SconesAreABreakfastFood · 20/03/2026 13:08

@BlackMilk No, different doesn’t mean better. That is why I said it was a matter of opinion. Maybe the milk has a higher fat content in one, I don’t know, I just said it was different, because it is.
