It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) Friend only to The Undertaker
(Edwin Starr 1970, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong)

Unless, of course, your name ends in Trump, when it ain't nothing but an opportunity to grift, deflect and destroy.

I was wondering when Chinese tankers with big Chinese flags painted on the sides will turn up, and sail through unmolested.

Although during the Houthi thing Chinese shipping went the long way round.

It's almost like Iran has no interest in shelling Chinese ships. Fancy that.

placemats · 11/03/2026 14:45

Nor do the Russians.

Israel is more concentration on the Lebanon.

If 2 rival gangs were shooting at each other across the street would you wander through it with your shopping? Even if you aren't the target of anyone's ire (and the Houthis were quite specific about who they said they were targeting) I wouldn't want to be on a boat in the middle of all of that.

Yup. And the Russians have the Caspian to sail down to do trade with Iran. To help make sure Iran is kept well supplied with what they need. Which by coincidence, is what Russia makes... to Iranian designs.

Something else The Great Orange One did not think about.

Edit - forgot the bit about China can supply the bits to Russia that they need to make the stuff Iran wants.

Just hearing that flights from Britain to Cyprus are being cancelled. Also heard two fighter jets overhead earlier this morning. The only 70th birthday present I want is to have a hug from my daughter who I don’t see nearly as much as I would like, and the plan is to be in England at the beginning of April to see her over Easter. Thanks, Trump, looks as if your shenanigans are going to ruin my birthday, on top of everything else.

I wonder how the US will manage on it's own now.

It's the interesting times we were fated to live in.

Well, if it was a new world order TACO wanted, he might have it. Just not the one he wanted.

logicisall · 11/03/2026 15:27

Tbh, if I were Iran, I would blow up a few ships at the chokepoints to create shipping hazards as well as planting mines. The problem will be in clearing the mines afterwards tho. I cannot see a happy ending for Trump’s not war.

The orange one doesn't think; his acolytes don't think either. Slipshod.

This race is going to be interesting. The 14th has been solidly GOP since it was formed in 2011. Prior to that it was part of the GA 9th and went GOP in 1995 when their Rep switched from Dem to GOP.

It's a largely rural district and very heavily MAGA so it will be interesting to see the result. I think that the chances are slim for Mr Harris. The war in and of itself won't change the outcome much. But drastic increases in the CoL just might. Although MAGA may very well accept Scrotus "It will only hurt for a little while longer but will be worth it!!! MAGA!!!" bullshit.

It's the direction of travel. When things that weigh a lot start to move in one direction, the energy needed to make them change course increases. Exponentially.

The GOP aren't getting those vote(r)s back anytime soon.

AcrossthePond55 · 11/03/2026 15:39

Based on what little 'business experience' I've (sorta closely but not personally) had with Scrotus it seems his philosophy with failing ventures is to throw someone else's good money after his own bad. This is based on the failed Mexican venture I posted about on another thread. I was living in So Cal at the time and 'rise and failure' was bigly news then.

So I don't think he's going to suddenly say "Well, this was a mistake. Stop and bring everyone home". No, he's going to start trying to rob Peter to pay Paul (ie, try to get money allocated to other federal agencies redirected to his failing war) and if he can't do that we're going to see taxes raised and prices soar. It's inevitable unless someone can think of a way to stop him.

RedTagAlan · 11/03/2026 15:39

"President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the war with Iran will end “soon,” claiming there’s little left to target and reiterating that the decision to end the conflict will be his call.

“Little this and that… Any time I want it to end, it will end,” he told Axios in a brief phone interview.

“The war is going great. We are way ahead of the timetable. We have done more damage than we thought possible, even in the original six-week period,” Trump said."

CNN.

U.S. at Fault in Strike on School in Iran, Preliminary Inquiry Says
Outdated targeting data may have resulted in a mistaken missile strike, according to the ongoing military investigation, which undercuts President Trump’s assertion that Iran could be to blame.
...
An ongoing military investigation has determined that the United States is responsible for a deadly Tomahawk missile strike on an Iranian elementary school, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with the preliminary findings.
...
Officials emphasized that the findings are preliminary and that there are important unanswered questions about why the outdated information had not been double checked.

Striking a school full of children is sure to be recorded as one of the most devastating single military errors in recent decades. Iranian officials have said the death toll was at least 175 people, most of them children.

Here’s the reason the United States bombed the Children’s school in Iran.
And yes, it’s Trumps fault.

The U.S. Built a Blueprint to Avoid Civilian War Casualties. Trump Officials Scrapped It.
www.propublica.org/article/trump-defense-department-iran-hegseth-civilian-casualties

Dismantling the fledgling harm-reduction effort, defense analysts say, is among several ways the Trump administration has reorganized national security around two principles: more aggression, less accountability.
Trump and his aides lowered the authorization level for lethal force, broadened target categories, inflated threat assessments and fired inspectors general, according to more than a dozen current and former national security personnel. Nearly all spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.
“We’re departing from the rules and norms that we’ve tried to establish as a global community since at least World War II,” Bryant said. “There’s zero accountability.”

That may be their next move. Hormuz isn’t especially deep and only a certain portion of it is safely traversable by oil tankers for that very reason - they require both their draft plus a safety margin. A couple of big wrecks, particularly if they’re near upright would impact that...

Especially big wrecks with explosives in them ...
