I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

OP posts:

Another one for fall out boy.

Eagles of death metal

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2026 11:36

Queen??? seriously??

No one is more famous than Freddie Mercury.

Think we might need a definition of famous here because some of the people named aren't famous in their own living rooms.... <scurries for cover>

I came on to say Spandau as for me Martin Kemp just edges it !

Not at the time, though.

Maybe Queen now but not while Freddie was alive!

Mike and the Mechanics.

Yes, great example. So many people have assumed that Mike was the singer - and Paul Carrack and Paul Young (not that one) are and were criminally underrated.

x2boys · 08/03/2026 11:38

The spice Girls Victoria Beckham did virtually non of the singing but far more famous then the rest of them

Francestein · 08/03/2026 11:38

Queen was super egalitarian at the height of their success. Every single member wrote at least one gold single.

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2026 11:38

I haven't heard of anyone in Blink 182 OP. Sorry.

That's as may be. But Freddie is the famous frontman. It's not about sharing out the tasks of writing.

Genesis, before Phip Collins who was the drummer (and main songwriter I think) left

But he was the singer and the drummer. There wasn't another singer as such.

Obviously different in the Peter Gabriel days.

At the time Geri was the big star. Most column inches etc. Victoria's fame came form courting DB.

I'd put Freddie as possibly the best frontman ever.

Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy are also up there. Both had this eerie ability to shrink a venue and make it feel like you are in a tiny club, or someones front room. Robert Plant can do the same - especially when he reminisces about smoking "jazz cigarettes" walking down Dudley high street.

Interesting.. and I think you're right.

But I think that was less to do with the band and more to do with their activities outside of the band and after they were chart-toppers

Nikki was a famous heroin addict who after the height of MC wrote some books and had relationships with high-profile women which kept him in the news.

Tommy is really only more famous than Vince for marrying extremely high-profile women and the chaotic tabloid fodder relationships he had with them.

I think there a lot of people from a couple of generations if not more that know Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee but is you said Motley Crue to them they wouldn't know the band.

Edited

Vince Neil was quite high profile after his drink driving killed Razzle.

Daijoubudesu · 08/03/2026 11:43

Def Leppard - everyone knows the drummer has only got one arm, can't tell you anything about the lead singer

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2026 11:44

Not sure some vocal bands really have a lead singer as such... but was Harry Styles the main singer in One Direction? If not, he was and is by far and away the most famous of all of them.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 08/03/2026 11:44

Yes. I'd say that Rick Wakeman is the best well-known of all of them by a long way - certainly nowadays. I've heard him attempt to sing random little snippets when he's featured on talk or game shows and...... he's an excellent composer and keyboard player, shall we say?!

This is very true 😂

Maryqueenofstots · 08/03/2026 11:47

Squeeze - pianist more famous than lead singer

Jools Holland ? He was only with them for about 1% of their (still continuing) career.

LeonardoAcropolis · 08/03/2026 11:49

The Beach Boys

But that just goes to prove the point: he's still much better known to the general public than any of their lead singers.

anniegun · 08/03/2026 11:51

Chic - Nile Rogers is the only one anyone knows

REP22 · 08/03/2026 11:51

The Banana Splits. Fleegle was the generally acknowledged main guy, but everyone knows the real power lay with Snorky.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 08/03/2026 11:51

Nowadays, the Communards.

Daytona1 · 08/03/2026 11:52

The Osmonds. Donny Osmond played keyboards
The Honeycombs. Honey Lantree was the female drummer

whatawalley · 08/03/2026 11:53

Kiss. Gene Simmons.
